Anyone remember these?

Yep, used to be on most pop cans. Since they were throw-aways and made of Aluminum, some people collected then and donated them to charities who sold them for scrap metal value.

yep.

I remember them from beer cans (I never liked soda in a can, needs ice). Also see Jimmy Buffet: Margaritaville

Except the scrap metal companies didn't want them. Charities collecting them were mostly operating under a misunderstanding. Many collected bins full of the stuff only to find out they couldn't sell them. What the scrap metal companies actually wanted were the entire cans.

EDIT:

So I just looked this up. The worth at the time of 1 MILLION tabs was about 300 bucks or so. However, it would cost more to collect and transport 1 million tabs than the money you'd get out of it. So, if you had collected a few million tabs for your charity, you might get $1000 or so for the metal value, but you'd have to pay hundreds just to get the tabs to the recycler. To put it another way:

1 can is worth 5¢ for an individual returning the can under a recycling program. The number of tabs for equivalent value of one can was about 150.

was always warned not to put the pull tab inside the can as you might swallow it when drinking from the can. did it anyways.

We used to make chains with them and put them on hats and things...😛 My sister used to make long chains for doorways like to old type made from beads (oh and yes we drank a lot)...

I even remember the old beer and soda cans were steel and could be found rusting in the ditch... (damn I'm old D🙂

I never thought of it at the time, but you could probably make chain mail armor from them :^D

Some beers still don't have twist offs.

P.S. On my last vacation in the Caribbean, the tomato sauce sold at grocery stores was "canned" in beer bottles and then re-capped.

I miss tin keys. You don't see them much anymore.

Some of my favorite meat is mystery meat. I love Spam, but it comes with a pull top now. I had a canned ham from Canada a couple months ago, and it had a key. Not the best ham, but the key made up for the deficiencies :^D

Yea Spam is not to bad these days since they have so many different flavors... Great with eggs in the morning... (or grilled on a sandwich)...

Canned ham used to be my favorite too but hard to find now its all vac packed just about...?

Buy off brand, dollar store, sardine-like, small salty fish units.

Try not to think about why they ended up at Odd Lots . . . failed mainland Chinese health standards, perhaps? 😱
