Anyone receive their TV converter box coupon[s] yet?

The site says mine want be mailed out until the 9th of May.

Not sure which box I will pickup. I actually get a few analog stations from some cities that are about 100 miles away from me using a $5 pair of rabbit ears, although I can't get our local CBS station at all. I hope the digital signals come in good.

I got my coupons, got the Zenith box at Circuit City. Didn't need any fancy antenna either, just your basic UHF loop antenna.

avs seems to like the zenith/insignia versions.
same chipset/design..basically rebadged lg models.
your old rooftop antenna is the best you need. theres no such thing as an hd antenna.

Supposedly mine was mailed out last week but i haven't received it yet. What does the envelope look like? Does it say anything on it or is it just a plain envelope?

TV Converter Box Coupon Program 🙂

i dont have cable/satalite.

i'm using rabbit ear attanae bought in the late 1990's.

do i still need a digital TV converter box ?

People who use antennas are the only people who DO need the converter boxes.

Actually since it is my tax dollars being wasted on this I do need the converter boxes regardless of my current method of signal reception.

Well, if you want to pay the difference to buy a box you dont need, then more power to you.

thought FCC gives u 2 boxes free?

Nope. I ordered them at least a month ago too. One tip: they expire something like 3 months after you get them. It might be better to wait if you aren't in a rush.

not free, its a rebate. the box will cost you about 25 dollars AR.
if you don't need it, its pretty useless. its only for people who aren't going to buy a new tv soon or have a lot of old tvs. you aren't going to get quality on the cheap, its composite connection, no svideo, no component, no digital anything.

I just came across a little more info that I thought might be helpful:

We finally got one of our government-issued DTV converter box coupons in the mail, and one of the notices on the accompanying information sheet caught our eye:

IMPORTANT UPDATE REGARDING REFUNDS: You will not be able to receive cash or credit for the coupon amount, but you can receive cash or credit for any amount you paid out of pocket, if the store policy permits.

To be honest, that's not much of a surprise when you consider how the coupon program actually works. If consumers were able to get credit or cash for returned DTV converter boxes, unscrupulous buyers could return a DTV converter box then use the credit to purchase any piece of electronics they wanted--which is definitely not the spirit of the coupon program.

But what happens if you get your DTV converter box back and it's broken? While you might think that note means that DTV converter boxes can't be returned, that's not the case. From the government's DTV converter box FAQ:

Can I exchange my TV converter box for another one?
If the retail store permits exchanges, you can exchange the converter you purchased for another coupon-eligible converter box.

So if you get a defective DTV converter box--or even if you don't like the one you bought--you can take it back for another one, depending on the store's return policy. Of course, the best option to make sure you get a good box the first time, and we've already done a comparison of a few DTV converter boxes on the market. And if you're willing to geek out a little bit, you can also check out Wikipedia's giant chart of converter box info (normal caveats about Wikipedia apply).

'Free' DTV converter boxes can't be returned? 🙂

lol, so i bought the isignia box, and it won't find any channels. I am guessing you need an HDTV antenna also to connect to the antenna-in? I tried a hanger tied to a wire (it works for my TV lol) and it was a no-go.

arrgh.

There's no such thing as a 'HDTV' antenna. If you get analog stations ( that also broadcast digital ) normally with an existing antenna, hooking that up to the converter box you should get something.

you need a decent antenna of any kind. preferably something on the roof.

Nah, I guess a hanger won't cut it. I am not allowed to use an antenna in my building outside of the apartment either, so I guess I am assed out. I barely get any signal at all on this tv. I have no clear sight of the sky either (brick wall out my windows) and I am on the 2nd floor of a 6 floor building. :ugh:

No, I am not. It's an old TV I use for my laptop to stream anime and movies on. I do have HDTV and a cable box in my living room though. 🙂 It would have been nice to have good looking tv in my bedroom. My building doesn't allow anything outside the apartments.

Will an amplified antenna work?

PSA: don't get the Insignia or Zenith boxes, or at least buy it without using the coupon first. Reason being that the boxes with the LG chipset have a major defect with the audio output when decoding DD 5.1, so a lot of programs will have a very annoying hissing sound coming from the left channel. If your box is okay, then you can do a return and re-buy with the $40 coupon.

I wish I had known about this prior to buying the Insignia. Because I already used the coupon, my only option is an exchange which likely won't fix the problem unless they come out with a newer revision, or to just return it (but I still lose the coupon that way).

Do you have a link to this issue goog40? I'm curious.

government and the companies doing this stuff are messing things up. expiration date is too short on coupons, selection of boxes is too few/ slow coming out. many are still waiting for the echostar. and yea i kinda hear the sibilance with the zenith sometimes🙁
thought it was just overcompression/reception errors before, but it seems like decoder. have to wonder if this should be recalled, because exchanging/returning once you use a coupon is difficult.

Got my coupons today, and picked up a Zenith DT900. I actually get less channels now than I did with analog, but they are very clear. I'm using a $5 antenna, so I'm not sure if thats my problem. Will a amplified one help? I can't get Fox or CW anymore, and I got them fine with the same antenna on analog. I also got a few channels about 70 miles away in analog, of course the digital ones don't come in at all for those.

Also the volume seems really low on the Zenith. I have the box volume up to 100% and have to turn the TV up about 3/4 just to get a normal listening level. I hardly ever had the TV past 1/2 on the volume before. Do I have a broken box, or is this normal?

EDIT: I think I'm just going to return this... Do they give you the coupon back when you return it, or is it gone for good?

WOW, i'm amazed so many people still use analog TV, I would have though that had gone the way of the dodo long ago, especially in a tech savvy place like Anandtech.
