So, I'm stuck this weekend at home with no electricity due to the most boring hurricane ever, Francis.

I decided to start reading the Da Vinci code, and couldn't stop reading it. As a history buff I found the premise to be very cool. I'm sure the author spent countless hours researching for this novel, the amount of historical data he used was very impressive. I know the book created quite a buzz due to the religous questions that were brought up and that is very understandable given how the story unfolds.

To those that have read it, what are your general thoughts on it? As a non christian/catholic the idea that Christ was mortal and married has no impact on me. I know the book is a work of fiction, but a lot of the ideas are based on compteting philosophies or historical information. Personally, these ideas seem possible, given how religions were created by man, and that man is capable of using religion as tool to grab power or money.

Read it, thought it was predictable at best. The history factiods that were actually true in the book were all common knowledge. *yawn* He's a hack, at best. I'm glad I borrowed the book instead of paying for it.

General thoughts: A highly overrated novel. Great on interesting little details of history that will surely come in useful around the watercooler, but an utterly terrible storyline. I read plenty so you don't need to tell me about suspension of reality, but the way characters in Brown's novel act is just ludicrous. Most conversations are something like this...

Person 1: "The hiding place for the Great Mogli's Scripture Of The Ass, written in 932 BC by monkeys and sea dwarves, is actually... a tomb?"
"Yes, yes! Incredible isn't it!" cried Person 2, misty-eyed.

GIVE ME A FRICKIN' BREAK. :p Where the hell was the guy's editor? Everything is so over the top that it just became an annoyance.

The first 3/4 of it were pretty good but the story just got ridiculous towards the end.

SPOILER ALERT

ylllus, I will agree that some of the escape scenarios had me scratching my head, it seemed like everytime they were about to get caught some BS escape plan was hatched without any reasonable details as to how...

the way everything sounded like a lecturer imparting the secret of the universe to you was sort of annoying. angels & demons isn't any better, really.

I haven't read it, but it looks interesting. I definitely judge a book by its cover! Anyhow, I am glad you enjoyed it.

i just want to comment on the subject of this thread. why do people phrase topics this way? this book has sold over 6 MILLION copies. YES, i think someone read it, unless 6 MILLION people like expensive paperweights, or buy books for some reason other than to read them.

its clever enough to be entertaining. time magazine had a thing on it a while back, not all its claims are facts of course. the ending is a cop out of course. and the extreme feminist female worship bs is about as disgusting as male superiorty cr@p.

The honoring of the feminine is a pretty old thing. Many of the pagan religions had women at the center. ;)

It was over the top and I am not really sure on the accuracy of his historical information.
However, I found it to be a highly entertaining read. I just wouldn't take it for anything more than simple entertainment.

I thought it was decent but still like a Michael Crichton book any day over it.

Word. I think it makes a bit more sense than the oppressive male society, but religion is just oogy to me.
