Anyone playing to upgrade to a CRT instead of LCD

playing = planning?

I still haven't made the jump to LCD because of prices, ghosting, and using resolutions other than the native. My Optiquest 19" CRT is on it's way out and I recently replaced it with a Samsung 900DF and really like the new monitor.

Personally, I went from a 17" to a 21" CRT. I perfer CRTs due to resolution switching mostly and high refresh rates. I like to switch between 1024x768 all the way up to 2048. Plus i've noticed some colors dont come on as well compared the LCD of my laptop. Though for general everyday use, LCD are fine for office work, reading text and the occasional Solitare game. :D But for heavy gaming i will take my CRT at this point. :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

CRT for now, might have to wait for some other tech before switching. I have considered going Dual monitor, LCD for everything, but gaming.

I'll stick with my CRT until LCD's become cheaper, and better. Both of which they will, in time.

I won't get an LCD until they become CRTs. And when that happens I'll already have a CRT so there'll be no need for me to upgrade.

If you're a hardcore and demanding gamer I would advice you to stay with a CRT like the others suggested.
IMO and experience I am not at all satisfied with an LCD for gaming. I haven't checked Dell's 2001 FP and 1-2 more new ones myself, but I don't believe they make so much difference from their predecessors.
So I wouldn't go for an LCD yet.

I love my Hyundai Q17 LCD :D , It's great for playing (no ghosting) and scales really well. Also my eyes are really happy

i play lots of games with my microtek wal-mart special 18 inch lcd monitor.

Minor ghosting is the only caveat, but its not that bad. Also, max resolution is 1280x1024 which kind of sucks, but I really dont need higher res than that in games.

I also have the Microtek 18 inch LCD but reverted back to my old KDS 19 inch (Trinitron) CRT due to ghosting.

I must say for everything but gaming the LCD is much better.

i made the switch to an lcd last year and I dont think i'd ever go back. The monitor is easier on the eyes and everything is sharper. I do agree that the price to switch is steep, but the monitor will last for years, so you might as well spend the xtra money for a quality lcd. If you buy an LCD with a response time <= 25ms, you should be fine for gaming.

I totally agree. I'll never go back to a CRT if I can avoid it. And LCD's DO play games great, I have no idea where people get this idea they are bad and ghost (perhaps laptops are different).

My previous KDS 15" LCD played games just great and it has a 35ms response time I think. I see no "ghosting". And my new 17" CTX LCD monitor with 16ms response time is even better for picture quality and brightness.

The only negative I have had with the LCD is that the benchmark programs have been too black for the dark scenes. Most very dark games I am able to lighten with the gamma setting inside the game.

I have a Sony GDM-FW900 (24" crt) and a Dell 1800FP, and i switch back and forth all the time. Typically for games that handle high res fine, i'll prefer the CRT simply because of the sheer size of it... but some games either don't support this resolution, or the resolution sucks (such as fonts become too small, or even the graphic itself gets 'warped' and stretch).

For games that i can't play at this high resolution (1920x1200), i definitely would rather play on the 1800FP rather than reduce the resolution on my CRT, or switching to my 19" CRT. Colors are more vibrant, easier on the eyes (even in games), and it's just more comfortable using an LCD, even for gaming. Personally for me, i've never noticed any sort of 'ghosting' or streaking or whatever people call it (i know the term ghosting that most people use is incorrect).

I'm too cheap to spend big bucks on a larger LCD... and then have to deal with a few dead pixels, especially when I can pay $180 for a 19" flat CRT and still have dead pixels!

I figure I'll have to swap out four or five Samsungs before I give up and accept one or two dead pixels anyway!

Sure, LCD's are sexy, but the cost too much, and the screen resolution interpolation issues or running a game at 1024x768 when the native res is 1280x1024, and then have a black border around it defeating the size advantage - blah!

I rather have few dead pixels on LCD than deal with geometry and convergence problems CRTs have. LCDs have gotten pretty good with non-native resolution scaling. And there's no black border.

For majority of people it's the cost that prevents them from using LCD.

I'm still not happy with the color rendering of most of the LCDs on the market today (and especially the ultra-fast ones used for gaming). Eizo has some nice LCDs that look like they would satisfy this digital darkroom fanatic, but unfortunately those LCDs are out of my price range. If I need to upgrade, the fact that one can get a top-of-the-line 22 inch CRT (which supports 2048x1536@85Hz) for less than a 17 inch 1280x1024 LCD with good color rendering qualities, pretty much settles the matter for me.

Im in the exact same prediciment right now. At work i use a NEC LCD 1850 and its great for programming and web. So I purchased a 19" Samsung LCD for home and although I loved it for working/surfing/etc, it wasn't great for all games. Some games like Call of Duty with lots of dark to light scenes were quite unplayable. But, some games like Unreal looked decent. Colors and detail was excellent.

So I returned it, and now am debating a 19" or 20" CRT, or a 17" LCD with a 16ms response time.

But, I know that I'll have to keep upgrading my video card to keep up with running games at the LCD native resolution, or risk scaling them down and hoping that it looks OK on the LCD at the lower resolution..

We looked at some 20" CRTs the other day and man, they are HUGE.. I can't image that beast sitting on my desk though....

I am still using CRTs as most LCDs iritate my eyes for some reason. Not as much as a CRT at 60 Hz but its quite gad. The best LCDs I've ever seen are the more recent dells which do not iritate my eyes but if I change the resolution from native, the distortions in text and graphics just kill my eyes. At the same time the only LCD where I could change resolutions is the 15' UXGA 1600x1200 screen on dell laptops but that one is like a typical LCD as far a loking at.
I am still wating for an LCD I can get.

One thing thoug, why aren't there plasma flat panel displays, they look great and I would be willing to pay extra for one.
