If they were going to make a WoW clone I wish they'd keep the roads a little more clear. Bit of a pain having to stop and dismount to kill more random enemies constantly. The game also seemed pretty stingy with the XP.

Ultimately, I think they just should have made a single player Kotor 3.

I think they seriously messed up by not going the Guild Wars model, which is basically like free MMO after initial purchase, with an expansion every 6-12 months.

More games need to do this.

They got too greedy with the subscription stuff.

I started up a new bounty hunter character, and I must say that it is probably the most fun I've had in the game so far. Mainly because you don't have to be a subtle sneak and because you don't have to close in with the enemy to do any damage. Just run to them with guns blazing, lots of AOE, tons of ruckus.

So, merc vs powertech? Don't intend on healing, as I have a hard time even selecting my companion...not too interested in being a stationary cannon doing channeled attacks. Just like being mobile and tearing the place apart.

Merc is the same as Commando, and I love my commando DPS, pretty fun to play PVE, it was my first char in this game, now I have so many chars, and I'm actually enjoying the way healing works with Commando/Mercenary.

vanguard/powertech is ok for tanking, but I didn't like playing DPS with it (haven't tried much to be honest)

anyway, for some reason knight/warrior is by far my least favorite class, the others are so much better.

I think trooper/bounty hunter is the best choice for your first char.

The PVP IMO is superior to WOW's PVP
It was, except the dev team kept taking features out.

So much lost potential. But leveling is fun as hell, and raids are pretty good... if you like that sort of thing.

Eh, basically I like the almost FPS feel where you just run around and shoot your gun. Don't really want to stand still and channel a lot of spells, which feels too much like rolling dice waiting for game to play itself...

From a cursory examination of the skills for both classes, it looks like Merc/Commando relies more on channeled damage skills. They also enjoy like 20 meters more range which is significant.

Like what? I think it's pretty nice how a level 15 in the 10-30 warzone can still be competitive. Same doesn't happen in WOW.

Flashpoints aren't really my thing...though they are more enjoyable than the snorefests which were WOW's instanced zones.

I never even hit max level. Got up to 48. Bought the damn game too. PvP was fun but god damn the PvE was horrible once you finished your story line.

World PvP (Ilum). Ranked 8v8 -- or in fact any ranked/competitive objective gameplay. The arenas -- and switching ranked to just arenas -- changed PvP culture overnight for the worse.

It's true that bolster is pretty slick, but low-level PvP tends to be based entirely on which side has fewer complete idiots on it.

Maybe GSF PvP is good, though. I dunno.

Given that your opinion is from ten max-level flashpoints, half a dozen raids and daily areas, and a group finder ago, it has zero bearing on the game as is.

Then you're doing it wrong.

For starters, you don't *have* to do all of the quests. You can skip them, and just focus on the quests for your class storyline. That's pretty much what I've done so far.

Other bits of it are plenty enjoyable. I'm really liking how all 8 stories intertwined, with characters that are NPC's to one group are killed by another faction. The PVP IMO is superior to WOW's PVP, and the space missions are pretty creative roller-coaster rides.

For a free game, it's been lots of fun.

The class storyline is also mainly consists of the same thing. It's nothing spectacular. And that doesn't change the weak combat and repetitive mission structure.

Glad you're easy to please, but it's still nothing special.

I think I realized my ultimate problem with this game was there is too much plot. MMORPG's don't need plot, they need to be fun and engaging virtual worlds where the plot is player created. Discovering the fantasy world, advancing the character and feuding with the opposing sides is what makes an MMORPG fun. This should have been a single player game and sold on consoles. They might have actually made money.

What they needed to do was remake star wars galaxies so it wasn't a buggy mess. People want an open universe with a real economy and freedom to influence that universe. Instead they made this abomination where they mixed this potentially pretty good single player game into an mmorpg. How about just offering coop and a battle ground.

I dropped WoW a little while after GW2 came out (purchased day 1 but was still heavy into raiding so I didn't dive into GW2 until a month or 2 after) and that was some time ago. Lately however it has been hard for me to keep playing gw2 cause even the new content is mostly grindy stuff and the rewards have been pretty crappy. Worse, lately I have had a WoW itch I needed to scratch ( I miss the tanking days). I picked up SWOTR (played in open beta) and I generally had a blast with single player as I totally dig the indepth story line. Unfortunately SWOTR's %50 exp penalty for the f2p model can be really felt after level 15, and that is pretty bad when the game offers little alternatives to gaining levels aside from pvp and questing. I also found at least the first instances to be a joke. No mob control and you are best off running 4 dps and a dps with a heal. As if the XP penalty wasn't bad enough, you are limited to 3 final boss loots a week for dungeons (it gets worse in raids. I believe we get no loot from epic raids). Ater reading the forums it seems like Bioware fully intends the f2p model to be nothing more than an extended trial to get people to subscribe rather than make the game around a self sustaining non subscription based play. So I quickly dropped SWOTR close to level 20.

I DID however just picked up rift. I played rift in open beta and the starter zone was so unimpressive that it made me not consider rift all the way until now. The starter area still sucks but it is pretty easy to plow through it, you will be in and out in 20 minutes. How wrong I was. If you are looking for WoW that is free 2 play, rift is it. Rift is like WoW pre 3.0 with a beta version of Guildwars 2 event tech. The event tech which helps in quickly forming large groups for instanced and non instanced raids is very functional, but there is no hiding that it is just the game constantly playing with raid frames and not as seamless as GW2. Everything else however is very much like old WoW, bloated talent trees, Macros and hotkeys, maybe not quite as many equipment stats but just as many slots.

Rift also has the best free 2 play model. Although there are many locks in place that were once able to be unlocked if you bought the BOX version of the game (or its expansion, both of which are really hard to find now) that have been split up into the store and cost more money now. Rift has a number of things that are well priced in the store, but some things are really stupidly priced too. However if you have money to spend, it probably has the best loyalty system that rewards you with many things the more money you spend.

Yes F2P in swtor is a big joke.Unless you are a sub you will quit pretty fast as even silly stuffs like "Hide headgear" requires to buy an authorization from cartel market or gtn.But the end game content is pretty good and I am enjoying it so far.

Personally I think powertech is much more fun than mercenary, though my opinion is based off pretty old knowledge of the game. I tanked as powertech though for VoE/Karaggas and whatever the third raid was, I forget it's name.

I don't think the F2P model is bad. It limits a lot of the "MMO" stuff but at the same time allows you full access to all the story missions, all the planets and all the 'base' levels (up to 50 I think) and there's no pay-to-win component that I'm aware of.

yes it's harsh, but I was able to buy the unlocks relatively easy (it was actually nice having it as an objective while buying and selling adaptive armor for a huge profit lol), and I had a level 50 character with unlocks (when level 50 was the max) with a pure F2P account,

but here is the thing, if you subscribe for 1 month ($15) you get preferred status, and the hutt cartel (level 55), also you have 1 month to make some credits and buy the account unlocks if you want, so you have something decent when you decide not to pay anymore...

Used to but not anymore, my entire guild (since 2002) left SWTOR for Guild Wars 2, and their F2P restrictions are beyond silly even for preferred members (which I am).

Eh, I view the game as more...KOTOR 3 in which other players are running around besides you as you are completing missions. And there are random moments that are cool, like when you gank someone of the opposing faction while on a story quest, or have your behind saved by a random passer-by, or group with someone new.

I do every now and then when I'm bored between catching up on those GD@#$@#$ Steam sales :).

I resub'd about a month or so ago and was invited to beta test pvp space combat - was fun at first but as usual with PVP it became repetitive and boring.

I don't know - maybe I'm finally burnt out on MMO's and/or just can't commit time to raid/pug and I'm not really interested in repeating daily missions anymore [plus it doesn't help that 99% of the guild quit to return to WoW or other games...]

Is that really worth paying monthly for? The loot sucks, the stories are hit and miss, theres lag, the graphics are just ok. There is an amazing amount of voice acting but honestly i found myself skipping through a lot of it.

No, not at all.

but,

-- I don't care about loot.

-- stories are occasionally clever, one of the better video game stories out there with twists and turns. But of course, just reading comic books is better

-- no lag problems for me.

-- graphics are decent. Too much loading though.

-- all of the cutscenes did take a little getting used to

Guess lack of replies is because it's not been officially released yet judging from the beta invite email I got.

Game got old and repetitive quickly, just like most MMO's
When you realize how much of your life is wasted in MMO's, it's scary.
