Went up to WalMart today, to grab a collar for my barbell and a new 25# plate for it.

Well, looked over at the smaller plates, and well...

I got:
2 x dumbbell handles (with collars)
4 x 10# plates
4 x 5# plates
4 x 2.5# plates

For only $40. Going to go up tomorrow and will grab a few more 10# plates, but damn was all that stuff cheap. At dicks plates were $1.10/lb!

Figured I'd post it here in case anyone wanted a cheap way to get into dumbbells. YMMV on the prices.

I much prefer going to the gym, but when I was working out at home I used screw-on dumbells and plates from Wal-Mart. For home use nothing beats it other than perhaps a used sporting goods store.

The only problem I have with that set is the cheap ass plastic wing nuts they use in the set, versus a good quality steel version. Luckily, they also sell dumbbell handles for less than $10, if I remember right, that are much higher quality. :)

Oh yeah, and compared to Academy Sporting Goods (one of the few other places where I live that I can buy plate steel), Walmart is probably only 2/3 their price.

Yeah, I got the handles with the metal locking nuts. $6.88 a piece I believe. I actually ended up paying only about $26 for 70 pounds of plates, so that's a hell of a bargain.

I know going to the gym is better, but it's not always feasible. Having a bench, barbell, dumbbells, and several hundred pounds of plates makes it so that I don't have to go to the gym EVERY time i need a workout.

I don't care if it is better or not, I'd never go. And thanks for the tip on checking Wally World, I never go in there. I paid 99 cents a pound for olympic style TSA 45 lbs plates@Sports Authority not too long ago. Sometimes they are 20% off, but I didn't feel like waiting. I just consider the fact I'll have them forever, and think of the premium as a built-in lifetime warranty.

Craigslist has decent prices. A guy was selling a sets of 5 to 100 pounds (5 pound increments) at $0.10/#.

Total, that is 2100 pounds for $210.00. I emailed him, but they had already sold.
