Ahhh

Gspot was the app I was thinking of.

VLC will also do the job.

Looks like you got it covered.

264 is easier to decode but results in bigger files, any chance it is a bandwidth issue?

Bandwidth over the network? I keep forgetting VLC gives codec information. I use h.264 because files size is not that important. I decided to give up on the Phenom II. The CPU was being clocked down to 800Mhz and I spent way to much time trying to figure out what the problem was. The BIOS sets it default to a multiplier 4x and every time I messed with the BIOS it would not boot even when I used auto overclocking. I was planning on replacing it anyway. I have a i7-6700/16GB PC2133 with the K2000. I'll see how that works.

Alright partner, good luck.

Re: bandwidth, yeah network or any bottleneck really.

When my buddy got a surround sound system some years ago it struggled to play certain large videos. He tried lots of things but back then his system couldn't keep up. Seems like old spinners wouldn't or couldn't buffer enough and then couldn't react fast enough to play high Def videos.

Now a stinking chromecast can do the job but back in the day high Def video was a system killer.

Did some quick tests. 4K video plays fine on the i7-6700 from the NVMe drive. They seem to play fine over USB 3.0 too. Over the network, there was some block artifacting and slow downs, some videos worse than others. Frankly I don't remember if I differentiated on the Phenom II system. The system is all cabled so no issues with WiFi. All the cables are Cat5e or higher.

I do feel sad that the Phenom II system is no more but on the bright side realized that the power supply is a BFG 1200w. I'm sure I can use that somewhere. I'll probably use the case to build a storage server when I retire my FX8350.

Well hopefully the PSU was really good quality, as I think BFG stopped making anything and went goodbye many years ago. Still, it could be really useful, if it is still in good condition with no degradation. I do recall all their parts to be pretty good back in the day. Do you know the specs on it? Is it modular?

Abit, Soltek, Epox, and BFG are among the names that conjure warm feels for me.

BFG made premium PSUs -

This exact model, semimodular, not even sure how it ended up in the Phenom II system probably had it on hand. I can't remember the original build. It has only seen light use. I did do some transcoding on it but that has been years. Even at full load the 720 only pulls 95w. I don't think I ever used it for gaming.
