It's a Toyota rav4 and has a "slide-lock" mechanism i think. it's the one where the lock is on the side of the door and opens side way instead of being next to the window and pulls up and down. lock smith costs too much. i have a kit here with a bunch of stuff to open but don't know how to open a slide-lock, only know how to open the kind that goes up and down.

Most stolen cars are Accords and Civics. Or Escalades if you only count recent model years.

i've actually seen this done . i was at a restaurant across from a junior college and saw a tow truck driver do it since a student had parked in a restaurants spot to go to class.
so i guess he had to do it to disengage the parking brake, so he had this thing that was rubber with an air pump that he stuck into the gap between the door and car. and then he pumped air until a gap started forming near the edge of the door. then he took a long rod , and stuck it in there until he could hit the power lock button.
im sure there are other ways. but i guess that is one of them.

I've locked my keys in my car a few times, and found that a good way to get in is to bend a wire coat hanger so that it looks like this: _________> and wedge it in between the door and the car frame (careful not to poke through or dislodge the rubber seal), then try to hook in on/around the lock mechanism and unlock it.

It's amazing how fast a locksmith can unlock (some) doors. Sometimes the way they do it really makes you wonder how secure your car is...
I was in a rental Grand Am and locked the keys in. Guy came, hanger over window, down, hit power unlock button, open, less than a minute (quicker actually, can't remember, maybe 5-10s).
That was quite a few years back but I imagine there are still a few cars out that you can get to the power unlock button that way.
