There's a tree in my back yard that's about 40 feet high. Anyone ever had to pay someone to remove a tree? What does it usually cost? I'm trying to find a reasonable service and need to get a point of reference so I don't end up getting reamed without vasoline. ;)

It completely depends on the tree and location. How close is it to houses, power lines, fences, etc. Also the big outfits like Davey Tree tend to change more than smaller outfits.

Just make sure that whoever does it has experience, is licensed and is insured (ask for a copy).

I have a 50-60 ft. silvermaple that just to take down the guy is going to charge me $200 (I have to dispose of everything). The only reason I am not doing it that the tree overhangs the house.

A neighbor down the street had a willow taken out and disposed of to the tune of $1200. Another neighbor has a huge boxelder that overhangs his garage, a neighbor's house and power lines. This tree is only 20 ft from both structures and is going to require a crane to assist in the removal. Cost: $2500

Yea, any monkey can take a tree down. The trick is to take it down in a controlled manner for safety of any other trees, structures or people involved. I cut alot of trees, and see more unsafe practices being used when felling a tree.

Trees can be extremely expensive to take down, esp if you want the roots all removed and the ground relandscaped. If its a big tree - 20+ years old and is near the house, or powerlines, consider 4000$ including landscaping the ground.

It's hard work and could cost about 1k or so. But then again, my boss had 9 trees removed for 3000.

All the tree cutting companies converged to Richmond after hurricane isabella last year and made off like a bandit.

I had three large, over 50' high, over 2' diameter, and 2 smaller cut down, stumps ground down, everything removed from premises for $800.

Alright then....I'm going to expect $500 or so. This tree has some space around it. It's not close to the house, but close to some fences that I own. I'll just let them know they can knock the fences down if it's cheaper. :)

Just had it done yesterday actually... 2 of them. One was 20 feet up and the other maybe just 15ft. It cost me $200 for both of them... including removing and stump grinding... and complete cleanup. They did a great job and yes they were fully licensed.

I had others quote me $400 and $600. I told them about an earlier $200 quote and they said "wow that's a good price you may as well go with them" cause they weren't sinking that low. Point is... call for many quotes. Then take the cheapest guy so long as he's licensed.

I could've done mine on my own, but it would've taken me a full day, at the very least. And how would I grind the stump down ? Instead, 4 guys came in and left within 30 minutes.

tie a rope to about halfway up the tree with a ladder.. cut the tree with a chainsaw and have somebody tug on the rope the direction you want the tree to come down.. then pay somebody 15$ to have the stump removed... my dad and i have removed about 60-70 trees from our yard this way.. although we got a great deal on the stumps (ended up costing about 8$ each)...
if the tree is going to fall on another tree you're going to have to let it fall, then cut it again a little bit further up the tree, and so forth...

I had one taken down which was relatively simple costs around 500 bucks. The second one was by a major highway cost me 1000 to get that taken down and my neighbor paid half because it was blocking a sign to his business.

Do it yourself. My dad and I took one down in his backyard and we only knocked down one power line. ;)

My dad paid my neighbor to cut down our front yard tree for $100. It was a really big tree.
