A JKD place recently showed up in my town, i know what it is and all.

I inquired about a class schedule and got offered a free personal lesson tonight.

Anyone have any JKD experience or knowledge?

Ask him style or philosophy, sbutle but big difference. JKD philosophy is the same as MMA philosophy.

Basically, Bruce Lee took a lot of the showy moves out of traditional Kung Fu and developed some new techniques to compliment it. It is one of the most effective martial arts there is.

Of course, you still need a good trainer and have the proper motivation.

I studied JKD for a while. My sifu studied under Ted Wong, who trained directly under Lee. What DaShen said is true, Lee's students all came away with something slightly different and each "family" has it's own particular style of JKD. Some are more focused on striking, others on grappling, some more balanced between the two. There is no single JKD style. It's a style without a style, to paraphrase Bruce. :)

It was a lot of fun and a good workout, and even though I only studied a couple years I did learn quite a bit about the basics of fighting such as stances and balance, effective takedowns, and getting more power out of strikes regardless of style. If you're getting a free lesson it can't hurt to try.
