Anyone in Chicago

I've driven through the Wild 100s at midnight on a Friday just for giggles and never felt threatened.

On the other hand of that, I wouldn't recommend anyone else doing that. I knew my way around and how to get out. I was also very careful.

I don't subscribe to the whole, 'Chiraq' and 'Chicago is just people get shot for no reason,' and 'its nothing but wall to wall ghetto, and violence' media hype nonsense....

BUT, like every other place in the world there are bad areas. This, specifically, the idea of touring a depressed area for 'fun' is such a bad idea if you don't belong there. If you are Caucasian, you also have to watch for the cops. They know you don't belong and will stop and mess with you.

I just went around chicago all weekend with some people from out of town, lots of fun stuff to check out down there. There are some free walking tours downtown that are nice, just show up to the chicago cultural center they leave there like every hour. The boat tours are definitely worth checking out, we just took a water taxi which gives you a pretty nice view of the city from the river and it's pretty cheap. Like other people mentioned I'd check out the museums and the lake shore for sure.

Aside from that stuff there are a lot of festivals going on, and if you like beer you should check out the breweries, I'd say the main ones to hit up would be Revolution, Goose Island, Half Acre and now Lagunitas has a taproom down there.

As far as deep dish goes lou malnatis is the best imo, giordanos is ok but it's just too much cheese.

It's more than not subscribing to it. One visit to Chicago and unless you're from Mayberry, you will realize that the majority of Chicago is very clean and a huge portion of it upscale and very classy. Most of the worst parts of Chicago are on the southern edges and a little on the westernly side.

I realize some people are inherently afraid of large cities. I live in a small city of a little under 1m people and rural people from my state are commonly afraid of visiting here. It's almost comical to be afraid of a city like that. I think once they see a non white person, they automatically assume "ghetto." Kinda ridiculous.

Couldn't agree more. It is not like you take a wrong turn and are in the middle of a ghetto/warzone (I still blame the media for this mentality). Basically everything north of the loop/downtown is fine - and exactly where a visitor should be to experience the history/culture and fun a major city has to offer.

Even the near south/west sides are quite safe anymore (didn't used to be). Everything down to past 35th St is basically fine. The odds that a tourist would wander into the real shitty pockets on the far west or south sides is extremely remote.

I love me some deep dish or some stuffed pizza, but I have found a thin crust that I prefer over everything else. http://slycecoalfiredpizza.com/ ... (Im way the fvck out in the boonies, this is in my area).

Also, Apple picking season starts soon, tons of great orchards out by Woodstock/Harvard IL area ...

I live in the north 'burbs of Chicago. Haven't been shot at yet. It is also hard to get NY style pizza here that is good. =(

In college, we used to occasionally travel to the north side to go to Santullo's for NY style pizza. Not the best NY pizza I've ever had (considering I grew up on Long Island), but it was good for Chicago.

But now that I'm in NYC, I occasionally want to change up my pizza and get some deep dish, but alas, that craving shall remain unsatisfied.

Wtf would anyone suggest giordanos for? Its chain crap. There are tons of them around. You want good pizza you need to go to uno's.

I for one would recommend a trip out to the suburbs to eat at two brothers roundhouse.

LMAO. You shit on Giordanos but then say Uno's is better? Everyone knows the best deep dish pizza in Chicago is Pequods.

I just visited Chicago and ate myself stupid. We went to Sumi Robata (and Charcoal Bar downstairs), Dusek's, Publican, Nightwood, Eataly & Greenstreet Smoked Meats. I would highly recommend all of them (although I was obscenely drunk @ Greenstreet so I guess I can't vouch).

Great food, great outdoor festivals/shows. I had a LOT of fun living there for a few years. I sold my car soon after I moved there, getting around on the red line was way easier.

It's rare to see someone so right yet so wrong at the same time. Giordano's is viable but you can do a lot better in Chicago. Uno's is also chain crap that's worse than Giordano's and not worthy of anyone's time.

Pequod's and Bacino's are my pizza of choice.

Santullo's is okay, but I'd prefer better. Sadly, I had to teach myself how to properly stretch dough (thanks youtube!) to come close to what I want. IMO, I can make a better pizza than most of the places around here, and is saying something, because I don't even begin to have the proper oven.

I am not a fan of the deep dish. Give me big, foldable slices!
