Anyone Holding onto their 8800GT

Sort of. I "upgraded" to an 8800GTS 512 and gave my GT to my dad. It was well worth it, because the GTS is a bit faster and OCs farther which widens the gap some more, and the GT was an EVGA factory-OCed model that crashed in some games and produced artifacts in others. It also made an annoying high-pitched whining noise when stressed. My dad's happy with the GT because his 19"@native requires much less GPU than my 26"@native, so he never has to push the thing or hears the horrible whine.

I've owned many EVGA cards over the past few years, and the 8800GT SSC was the first piece of shit I encountered.

EDIT: I have been considering upgrading since I played Crysis and Call of Juarez in DX10. The GTS can easily do highest settings on both in DX9 (max DX9 in Crysis is High), but they both look so much better in DX10...which of course is impossible to do at max settings at native res. However, from what I've read, the new cards will still not allow me to run them maxed at native...right?

Well I went and did it. Problem now is some overheating to the point of crashing. Strangely Crysis runs with no problem, but Assass Creed with any amount of MSAA heats the suckers up and it freezes the system after 10-20 min. I've both read and watched a video of installing a cooler like the S1 and am not sure I'm up to it. Thinking about plugging in an exhaust fan in the free slot below the card and see how that goes. It's a hassle free install and only costs $5.

have you tried upping the speed of the gt's fans? You still running at the default 30%

^ and one can easily use eVGA's precision if all you want is s simple temp monitor and to raise fan speed. Raise it to about 45% on the 8800GT it should bring it down another 10-12c on load

On a GTS here, but I'll definitely be waiting for awhile. As a side note, I think the lack of new, great "pushing the envelope" games isn't there to push people to upgrade unless they've been putting it off for a while. It's not to say there's nothing out there to play, but for example me personally all the stuff I play regularly isn't on the Crysis level of eye candy/requirements.

Absolutely -- it'll play any game I throw at it at 1440x900 (monitor's native) so no reason to get rid of it for at least another year.

There's really no need to buy another video card until there is a vast improvement in performance. I have a EVGA superclocked 8800gt that runs everything I throw at it. newegg has this very card for $155 plau a $20 rebate. I may get one to run SLI for that price.

Yeah. You can keep it 10 years if you really like. In 2018 it will still play games like no other at 320X200.

Sold my MSI NX8800GT OC which was a pretty good card considering that I had a 9800XT prior to purchasing it but I have a EVGA 8800GTX (g80) I had waiting around looking for a home and thats what I'm using. Naturally it performs better than the 8800GT and although I would like to purchase a GTX280 I cannot justify the cost. The 8800GTX does everything I need a card to do despite its maturity. The card is a beast, as much as the temptation to "upgrade" I just think I will wait a bit.

Yep, I'm stupid Fixed and no more crashes.

I grabbed evga's Precision software and set up a few profiles. Downclocked with low rpm for idle/2D and OC'd (to factory settings) with various fan speeds.

Seems to idle at 52-54C and load 68-70C or so. That fine ya figure?

Just off chance - isn't the older 8800-640 kind of between the 9600GT and 8800GT - give or take a few FPS?

Sounds good - your mobo isn't listed in your sig. if you have an SLI mobo I would lean toward the 260, if an Intel (or more specifically a crossfire capable) mobo the HD4870, or whichever card you personally prefer.

I'm still holding onto my Asus 8800GT which was one of the first ever prouced and shipped to Sweden.

replaced the stock cooler with a Accelero S1 a couple of months ago. ordered a Turbo Module today. been running stock speeds but will do some overclocking now

my fingers were really itching to order a HD4850 but I managed to pull through. since my monitor is limited to 1280x1024 there is no real need to upgrade yet

I have ASUS P5B Plus - I will replace that maybe in a year , get a 7I , but im undecided over a 260, 9800 GTX or a 4870 ,all are around the 200 mark

I was going to keep my 8800GT (it's a "SC" edition" but doesn't overclock past that for anything) but the performance of the 48XX series was just too good to pass up. Besides; 19x12 with eye candy puts a hurting on a 8800GT anyway.

I decided to go all the way and get the 4870X2. It's overpriced ATM, but I'm future-proof for the next two years at least.

My 8800GT is holding quite nicely, with an Accelero S1 with a ghetto-rigged 120 ziptied to it, it gets awesome temps and can handle whatever I throw at it right now (bar Crysis, of course but I don't really care about that now).

I have one in my other PC... I actually kind of want to get rid of it and steal my passive 7600GS back from my mom (I'd probably have to give them the 8800GT ) as I prefer the machine being quiet as I never game on it and usually the only people that do are people staying at my place (which isn't often). Unless someone knows of a nice passive yet powerful card.

Hmm looking at it now, I can get a HD3850 for $90 after rebate from ZZF that's passively cooled. That's not too bad, but it'd literally leave me with an extra 8800GTX and an extra 8800GT :Q.

I was on a 9600GT and upgraded to a 27" 19x12 monitor. Which, even for WoW, didn't work so well.

Got in on the $150 4850 from BB launch week but suffered instability in WoW and STALKER. (Even after bumping up the fanspeed to cool the card, wouldn't run right.) Returned to BB - thank goodness for their thirty day return policy even on open box items.

Picked up an 8800GTS 512MB on eBay and now can run F@H GPU client + WoW maxed simultaneously and it's quick enough for STALKER for my needs. So I'm sticking with that for the moment, probably until the GTX 260 gets into the $150 or lower range (which is where I normally buy my cards - I always regret it when I spend more than that because the card is obsolete anyway in six to nine months).
