So, apparently, there is an anime just released in the same vein as Sailor Moon, but with boys. My GF actually wants to watch it. =(

It's not new, but do you mean Star Driver? The main character's alter ego is literally called "Galactic Pretty Boy". o_O I checked it out because it has mechas, but it was too weird for me.

I thought it was new. I don't know the name. She described it to me as "Sailor Moon, but oh so gay." with a strange smile.

star driver is great. well worth sticking through to the end assuming you can tolerate some of the over the top aspects of the esthetic. plot-wise it was one of the strongest original series that year. it does turn on a dime frequently when it comes to switching between the light hearted comedy stuff to the serious drama.

I watched all of Fullmetal Alchemist on Netflix. It is very well written. The relationship between the two brothers was done very well. The very end of it was not up to the standard of the entire series to me, but it was not terrible.

I am watching Hunter x Hunter on Netflix. I just finished season four. It has been great to watch so far. I would like to see the main character, Gon, physically grow up a bit. When the series started he was 12 and through four seasons only one year passed, yet Gon is still the same size.

One of my favorite parts of Hunter x Hunter was
when Killua took the Hunter test a second time.

I'm not too sure what I think of the anime this season. Aldnoah Zero seems to have turned into Gundam SEED. Log Horizon 2 has been continuing since last season, but it's been meandering sooooooo much. Honestly, I'm having trouble thinking of the titles of the newer anime that I've been watching. Okay, I went and looked up the list...

Saenai Heroine no Sodate-kata - Not much of a surprise that I'd watch this, but to note, I'm a few episodes behind. So, that means I'm not terribly sure where the show is going, but it's a harem and an ecchi with a somewhat amusing

Ansatsu Kyoushitsu - This is a weird show, but it's kind of amusing at the same time. It's about a weird, octopus-like creature that destroyed 3/4 of the moon, and now he says he will destroy the Earth in a year. However, he wants to teach, and he'll allow people to try to kill him before then. He can only be killed by a special material that's rubbery (fairly harmless to humans), and the government equips the kids of the outcast class of 3-E with the means to do so! I'm still not sure if the main character is actually a guy. The voice and hair style push me toward girl, but the character wears pants and the subs use masculine pronouns.

Yoru no Yatterman - This is a strange anime that almost reminds me of a sort of Rocky & Bullwinkle style show. You've got the group of rag-tag "villains" going against the Yatterman to give them a "dekopin" (that flick/poke to the forehead that you see in anime). It's weird, but it has a fun style.

Rolling Girls - I don't really know what the point of this show is supposed to be, but I'm trying to figure it out. :p

EDIT:

I'm also checking out the original seasons of a few shows like Dog Days and Durararararararara to see if I want to watch the latest.

I watched the first episode and half of the second (fell alseep) Seemed like an interesting story and set up for sure. Plan to keep watching it myself.

Aldnoah Zero - Its starting to go downhill a bit for me. TO mechy for me and feels different than the first season

Tokyo Ghoul Root A - Im still enjoying it. its a continuation of the first season and so far is pretty good.

Log Horizon 2 - I dunno on this one. It is all over the place it feels like. One second its an epic adventure the next its meh

For reference, this anime I was referring wasn't Star Driver. I don't believe it has a translation, or at least, the GF hasn't found one.

Also, don't ask how she knows every character in Attack on Titan without seeing / reading a single 'official' episode / chapter. >_>

Rewatched Gurren Lagann for like the 50th time. The first season is still pretty much the best anime ever. Second season still meh, but good enough.

For Hunter x Hunter, Netflix does not have all of the episodes. I have gone to other sites to watch them. I am getting close to finishing it up. It has been a really good series.

Gon's transformation to kill Pitou was fantastic.

I realized something the other week. For the longest time, I wondered why they left off "Laputa" from the title "Castle in the Sky". Then I realized, "Oh yeah... that means 'the bitch' in Spanish. Probably not a good thing to have on your box in countries where people speak Spanish." (It also means "the whore", hence the Rammstein song "Te Quiero Puta" or "I Love You, Whore").

Of course, I could have just looked it up on Wikipedia. :p

Yeah, I think it's that one that someone else mentioned. I don't usually pay attention to the shoujo-bait stuff. You know... the ones that are chock full of bishies (Internet-made plural of bishounen -- beautiful man), and especially if said bishies hit on each other all the time.

Also, don't ask how she knows every character in Attack on Titan without seeing / reading a single 'official' episode / chapter. >_>

You mean watching fansubs or reading scanlations? At least in regard to fansubs, I prefer them over anything else. The reason is that it feels like I'm paying for a worse product with the legit releases. The huge advantage for fansubs is that they use SSA/ASS, which gives them far more power than your standard subtitles on DVDs or Blu-rays. Albeit, fansubs aren't perfect. I used to do proofreading for scanlations, and it's really not hard to pick up on all the unintentional grammatical mistakes (some may be intended based upon the translation).

I never liked the second cour/season either. In my opinion, zaniness is okay, but there's a fine line between zany fun and inane. The second half of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann ended up going a little too crazy. The first season was also more of a parody of mecha shows, but that was a bit played out in the second. I also like the music from the first half -- mostly this one.

Log Horizon 2 - I dunno on this one. It is all over the place it feels like. One second its an epic adventure the next its meh

I find that the first series was about people adapting to living within what used to be a digital world and learning about
how the world is evolving around them
. The current series has a little bit of that, but it's mostly just silly side stories that don't matter. I think it's also problematic that they're putting so much focus on the younger Log Horizon members right now, but they did a really bad job of keeping them relevant throughout the series or even establishing them to begin with. Rundel Haus Kode was the only character that had any development, but he was tossed to the side for about a dozen episodes. The other minor characters usually serve as plot devices -- especially during that Valentine's Day episode.

It being so over the top and a parody is what made it so good.
And then plot armor fails and Kamina dies, it is pretty much like "what? no way they kill off a main (and the best) character!!!!" It would be like if Mugen died halfway through Samurai Champloo.

current season picks:

aldnoah zero: still strong, the time skip has pretty much upgraded the two main characters into uber OP status. [the primary difference in feel is because cour 1 was more or less realtime:screentime. each ep picked up exactly after the previous and very minor elipsis between scenes. a bit like a feature film. if you binge watch it is all one big tight arc.] this season is taking bigger strokes over longer periods of time.

Rolling girls: ep 1 and 2 have some pretty amazing fight animation on par with studio trigger/kill la kill or a gainax/flcl. unfortunately it settles into a far tamer 4 girl road trip melodrama in 3,4. not sure if it will get back to the epic fighting, but ill give it another 5 eps.

Yoru no Yatterman: inversion of the old Yatterman 1970's series setup(costume hero with gadgets/bots vs trio of criminals ala team rocket from pokemon) animation is nice and there is a somewhat dark undertone, but overall it is a fun diversion. i have a feeling it will pivot to a serious life or death drama in a few episodes.

Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata: probably best likened to sakurasou, another light novel based gag series heavily dependent on fast dialogue delivery. guy otaku wants to make a moe girl dating game, mini harem team of actual creative types all trying to get his affection. main no-personality female is the hook, as her meta observations are hilariously on point.

Fafner Dead Aggressor: sequel series after original and movie. i dont remember enough of all the main plot details from the original, but the setup of families on an island sending generations of kids to fight monster/aliens still has resonance. 3d in the opener was well done, general plot pacing is moving along well. huge cast, im not even attempting to remember anyone's name given how frequently they die(character recognition is hard given that they stuck with actual human hair colors so half of them look nearly identical, never thought i would miss the dayglow hair from a clamp type series)

still following:
shigatsu wa kimi no uso: still the heaviest hitter as far as emotional tearjerker melodrama series.
shirobako: meta type series about a studio making an anime, some surprising insight into the behind the scenes dirt/politics/downsides of anime industry. i kind of wish they would actually make the pseudo girls in fighter planes series they are fake making.
nanatsu no taizai: hoping they dont catch up to the manga.

need to start:
military
yuri kuma arashi: translation: girl love bear storm, looks to be that one way out there series of the season.

skipping:
kantai collection: between uppote, girls n panzer, strikewitches this should be something i would like, but the premise just never seems to hold up for me. episodes use a little too much 3d so the girls seem a little lifeless. characters are so numerous that not much development can happen in the spattering of time they can give each one.(i do like the 4 sister battleships)

aldnoah zero: still strong

I think the series sort of redeemed itself after
Slaine killed Sauzbaum
as that setup never really made sense, but something still feels off compared to the first cour. Maybe it's the fact that Inaho's character is so underdeveloped that it really starts to hurt the series after a while.

Yeah, the fight scenes in the first two episodes were pretty interesting, but I don't know what the heck the series is doing right now. All I know is the Bests have those stones and that one woman wants 'em.

I actually had no idea that there was an original series, but I've been watching this too. I think the series has shown that it has a good balance of drama and comedy in it, but I wonder what role that new girl and guy will play.

Let's just hope that it doesn't go off the rails like Sakurasou did at the end. :p

I stopped watching the series after I started reading the manga, but it looks like the series was at volume 6 by episode 12, which is a pretty brisk pace. The current arc ends... I think around (what will be) volume 12. Frankly, this next arc looks a lot more interesting and that it will also answer a lot more questions... mostly relating to
Melodias's demonic origins
.

gundam the origin 1
char's origin story with unicorn level animation. looks like we will finally get all 3dcg ms battles. promotional videos with 5 min of actual footage.http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2015/02/18/mobile-suit-gundam-the-origin-pv-revealed/

It can't be any worse than Recon-G. :p

like i said, cour1 = tight rollercoaster ride very immediate sort of build and resolution. cour2 is really looking at the big picture and the politics. sauzbaum was actually a sympathetic character who can actually be called the anti hero protagonist as he is the one making things happen and moving towards a goal. unfortunately this is the inaho/slaine show and they needed to get down to the conflict between those two. i have a feeling a/z will go to a 3rd cour. though things really hit the head with engagement and the life support murder attempt.

its an anniversary show, part of the time bokan series. the gatchan and alou bear a physical resemblance to the original yattermans so i suspect they will take over as heroes after doronbo defeats the yatterbots/aliens.

What about Log Horizon 2? The latest arc has been making me cringe quite a bit to the point where I was literally skipping through episodes. I just do not care about Rudy x Isuzu -- especially when it's Isuzu whining about music or whatever. It's a far cry from the wide-sweeping political aspect that the first series had.

though things really hit the head with engagement and the life support murder attempt.

Yeah... haven't seen the latest episode yet. :p I normally wait for Vivid-Watashi's release for that show rather than dealing with HorribleSubs.

Not yet. I was going to watch it later. Have you kept up with Gundam Build Fighters Try? You want to talk about taking it up to 11... that show has been getting kinda crazy. I've just been wanting Iori to show up just for kicks, at least
he sort of showed up through Yuuma's sister, who I didn't even recognize from the first series.

i never even bothered with loghoz, too slow and premise lacked consequences. i would kill myself if i had to slog through 3 seasons of that fluff.

i go with commiesubs for a/z, they fall behind sometimes but lately they are day of. the translations are very good and they do the op/ed lyrics and a bunch of misc text/signs/notes that horrible usually skips.

try fighters is keeping up with the quality tradition of all the build series as far as story and general pace. i still prefer the original build ova as it was better grounded in reality. it was nice seeing the sister again, cant remember if the little brother ever appeared in build fighters. i wouldnt mind seeing iori sei show up again, but everything he builds is so op and deus ex mecha/hidden power save the day. i do wish they spent just a little more time on introducing the rest of the teams.
