I started using Gaim somewhere around 10 years ago maybe? Around 0.62 I think and I've never looked back. Currently on Pidgin and I still have no desire to switch.

Download and compile it. If you get a msg about needing SSL installed (open SSL won't work), you'll need to install it, then RECOMPILE it again (that was the part that got me).

Maybe this was explained somewhere else but I can't figure out how to start an IM conversation with multiple people in a single chat "room"

EDIT: And I just figured it out :D

EDIT: Just wanted to add, I'm getting tired of Trillian's same interface, since I've been using it for the last 3 years.

Im getting tired of Trillian being slow as dirt and seriously slowing down my startup time.

Where do you find themes for Pidgin? Any particular places?

I can't find anything by searching for Pidigin themes.

edit: I should probably mention that I'm running it on XP SP

iirc pidgin uses GTK+ themes. Go to start -> programs -> GTK -> theme selector and select a different theme. To get other themes you can search Google and download/install them.

Ok, I've selected the themes, and pressed OK, but it seems to make no difference to Pidgin, only the Theme Selector. Am I doing something wrong?

Once you select a different theme, enable the "Pidgin GTK+ Theme Control" plugin. Next, click configure and click "Re-Read gtkrc files" button. This should change the current pidgin theme to the theme you selected in the GTK+ theme selector.

Does anyone know how to sign on to an IRC channel and server in Pidgin?. Supposedly, you are supposed to be able to do this easily but the fact is that the option given for sign up are not quite as straight forward as in Trillian but whatever. Anyway, the options for signing up in Pidgin are the following fields: Screen name, Server (which, by default, has irc.freenode.net), Password, Local alias. In the Advanced tab the following fields: Port (6667 is typed here by default), Encoding ("UTF-8" is in the field by default), Username, and Real name:.

Now I don't know if there is something that I'm missing or something but in Trillian, I remember that to access IRC was as simple since the program would automatically update the number of servers and channels which would become a more of a point-and-click ordeal (no not complaining, but just saying).

When I login to IRC it brings up a server window and I just use that to type /join or /list

Open terminal; type:

sudo apt-get install pidgin

You'll be required to enter your root password.

gee I wonder why you would have to block people?

After using Pidgin for the past few months, I think I'm gonna ditch it. Two main problems kill it for me.

1) The absolutely retarded font inconsistancies, where it's a pain to setup fonts to make what you see vs what the other person sees match.

2) The inability to send offline messages on AIM.

Neither of these are scheduled to be fixed anytime soon.

Back to AIM, I guess *sigh*.

Is anyone having this issue with Pidgin?: Since two days ago, whenever I type something, no matter what protocol I happen to be using, the text comes indented automatically and presents itself in this manner.

Person1:

Hey

Person2:

Yo

Person1:

Huh?

Thinking that I have accidentally clicked on something within the preferences or plug-ins, I have tried to have looked around but never found anything in particular to fix this problem. Anyone else having a similar problem? Anybody has solved it?
