I liked GAIM, and I like Pidgin, it's still definitely got a few rough spots though:

#1. For some reason Starcraft runs like crap when it's open. Weird problem considering between the two of them I'd be shocked if they use 30 megs of RAM

#2. The away message system is crap compared to AIM.

#3. File transfers and Direct Connect very rarely work

One thing I do really like is that they fixed the transparency option so the window becomes Opaque on focus. That'd been bugging me for years!

Anyone having problems with Pidgin connecting to the AIM network lately? It took a couple of retries today to get Pidgin to finally connect.

WTF? When did it get switched to Pidgin? I'm a Trillian user myself. Never really liked GAIM. I think I'm gonna give Pidgin a try and see if much has changed.

It's basically gaim 2.0 that's been in development for a while. Trademark issues with AIM had arisen and they held off releasing v2.0 until that was all settled.

Yeah. It eventually connected after retrying a lot.

I just tried it. I still prefer GAIM 1.5. There are some missing preferences, like shortcut keys. The idle on last message doesn't work. There isn't a way to disable user icons when hovering over name in list.

huh? i'm still using Gaim. Why didnt it tell me to upgrade to a new vresion?

I got Pidgin to install under Windows XP-SP2 on my desktop (see sig) and my wife's Dell 4150. For some strange reason it won't work on MY 4150. The two Dells are set up pretty much identically. The only three things that goes differently when I installed on my wife's vs. my 4150 are:

1. During install, it does NOT give a language choice on my machine;
2. It seems to try to install Aspell twice on my machine;
3. When I try to reinstall, I get a DOS window asking my if I want to overwrite files.

After it seems to complete the entire install, and whenever thereafter I try to open Pidgin on my 4150, I see nothing as far as activity goes until a few seconds later I get the "do you want to send an error report to MS" message.

Thoughts? Suggestions (other than "take it to another forum")?

No thoughts or suggestions from anyone?

OK, so I got it to install by not installing aspell.

Is there a way to download and install aspell separately?
