One of my friends wants to make a website where he can display all his photographs (he's an amazing photographer) and also host big files.

They're offering 2.34GB of storage with 120GB monthly bandwidth for $8/month if you get a 2yr contract.

I know nothing about them since I use Cernax and I like those plans

Well the mysql inst up top notch as alot of hosters, but it works out pretty much for me. Ill pick up a file for download speeds

The host is perfect for plain pictures but sucks for forums (mysql) or anything that has to with databases =( as you can tell.

Heres a speed test file:
save as- http://elites.360waves.net/titanicpimp.wmv

Take a look at http://www.telnap.com. I use them and they seem to have a good rep. They are running a sale right now so If you prepay for a year you can get 5gb/80gb at a comparable price to dreamhost.

I've sent in one support request so far for something that was my fault, received a reponse around 1am within about 15 minutes :)

I actually had a client signup through them just to get some added savings, compared to paying me. I've spoken to Eric (the owner) a few times and he has been very helpful. For awhile he did not even have my business, yet he still helped me with my current host. I figured I should give him a try, I am glad I did.

Btw a 2 yr contract is pretty bad if their support takes a beating. Double check that you can back out of it for a refund.

Btw, if you like Cernax, you'll love Telnap, Cernax was actually hosted by Telnap for awhile.

With the trends in web hosting, you don't want to get locked into a contract or to pre-pay for a significant amount of time.

Even 1 year is quite a bit of time to pre-pay. I only did it because I knew Eric @ Telnap would have continued to do a good job. Be sure to research before you make your choice. Even though there might be a 30 day money back policy, that doesn't mean they can screw you over after the 30 days.

Amol,

If you find the coupon code DreamHost.com offers:
  • FREE Domain for 1 year.
  • 2400MB disk space
  • 120GB bandwidth per month
  • 600 e-mail addresses
  • Unlimited MySQL, PHP, CGI, Jabber and more.
  • No cPanel or DirectAdmin, they use a custom control panel

$9.24 PER YEAR with coupon code.

Don't ask if it's a reliable/reputable web host because WHO GIVES A RATS ASS? It's under $10/yr.

Hostpc is pretty good. I think for 8.99/mo it's currently 3200mb storage and 40gb/mo. I think they also have a pics site going now as well, that might suit him better. They offer installatron which makes installs a lot easier for software.

Pics site? I'm confused as to what that means

Does it mean that it's easier to upload pics or something? Haha, I'm a noob.

like a gallery software or something? He does want something like that.

We're at the registration page for dreamhost, coming out to $10/one year or $105/two years.

edit: we're going for one year

I dunno good question. My 1 year expires 3/1/2006 I guess I'll find out there.

When it comes to cheap hosting I'm quite satisfied with SonataWeb.net and Telnap.com

You get what you pay for!

Help some webhosting noobs out here ---

This site is basically going to be an "about me" page with emphasis on his photography

Any webhost with panel software that would go well with that?

I'm not going to suggest a web host, but I would use one that has Fantastico (auto-installer).

I'd then install mambo, and integrate gallery into it. Should give you a good simple and easy to edit site with a photo gallery built in.

dreamhost has its own panel

doesn't have fantastico
