So Ive decided I want to take up boxing as a hobby. I want to get myself a heavy bag to use 2-3 times a week. I plan on hanging the bag in my garage.

Ive scoured craigslist to find some good deals on bags, but they all seem to be in the 70-100+ range unless its an old beat up bag. It seems I can get a new bag for that. Everlast in particular makes a 100 year kit that is around 80 bucks and comes with a 70 pound bag, gloves and tape. I'm curious if its cheap quality or not?

I'm thinking a 70 pound bag would be ideal. I'm only about 160 pounds and have never boxed before, so I don't want anything to heavy. I don't think leather/canvas is really going to make much of a difference from what I've read.

Just looking for some general tips/suggestions on getting a bag and anything else pertaining to boxing.

I started with new bag when I first got into it and if I had it to do over again I'd have gotten a used bag that was worked in. It would have saved my hands and wrists lot of pain.
You should also get yourself a speed bag set up and I recomend Everlast for both mostly because that's all I'm familar with

A couple years ago, I bought a 100lb Everlast "Never Tear" bag. After less than 30 sessions, it got a tear. And the chain broke. And all the filling gradually sunk to the bottom so hitting (usually w/ kicks) the bottom 1/3 of the bag felt like rock. I was not impressed. Also, I originally threw the chain over a support beam in the house, but every time I punched it, vibrations would go through the whole building and annoy the crap out of my house mates. I then bought a metal stand for it, which fixed the noise issue, but the stand itself was a bit too light & flimsy. I weighed it down with four 50lb sandbags, but the thing would shift around anyway and got bent out of shape a bit.

Moral of the story: if you're really going to use this stuff, don't go cheap. I bought the two items above for ~$200 at Sports Authority and they started to fall apart in less than a year. It was a fantastic workout, but you really need to invest some money to buy something that can (literally) take a beating.

i have a 80lb never tear bag from everlast, it's not bad.

The gloves and boxing video it came with are worthless, I ended up buying some boxing/training gloves and straps anyway.

I'm 185 lb and it's not bad, just get it tied down

I'd suggest you join a boxing or MMA type gym.
Cheaper, way better equipment than you can ever afford, plus experienced peeps around...
