be it a psychologist, or a psychiatrist?

how do your appointments usually go?

i mines will last for an hour, and he said it may take a few appointments to diagnose me.

im hoping things will go well, and i will get well soon.

share your comments, horror stories on your doctor if you want to.

Even if I did go to the shrink, I wouldn't tell anyone.

It is embarrassing.

It is like telling everyone that you have a small penis. Even if that is the case, you should keep such things to yourself.

why? ashamed because you have an anxiety disorder? im not shame. im not crazy or mental. i have a anxiety disorder which many of americans suffer from.

thats fine if you dont wish to share anything. i never asked to tell me what you go to a shrink for, i simply asked what do they usually say do? thats all.

Why would it be embarassing? If someone needs help, it's best to get it. If they feel comfortable enough to talk about it, then more power to them.

Being scared or embarrassed about seeing a shrink would probably contribute to the fact that you're seeing a shrink.

I'm sorry that you feel that way.

There's NOTHING to be embarassed about. In fact, just about everyone would benefit from psychotherapy. Obviously the willingness to listen and change are necessary prerequisites before any kind of therapy will work.

I have never seen a "shrink" but I would welcome the opportunity. I don't see any shame in it at all. In fact, I think it would probably be a really cool and beneficial experience. Maybe someday I'll do it just to see how it goes.

This world and the people in it can cause a lot of psychological harm. Psycotherapy is all about getting to the bottom of a person's "hangups" and enabling that person to successfully deal with them.

Ditto. Admitting you have a problem is the first step to curing it and it is how you fix it and get back to where you wnat to be.....

Announcing you are going to a shrink is sort of like announcing you have to go to the drugstore to get your herpes meds refilled.

Actually the biggest "embarrassment" is seeing the climate of fear and shame that keeps so many from reaching out
help.we're all fuxored in one way or another ..lol nobody gets perfect parents ! some of us are just more functional than others and more adept at working their dysfunctions to their advantage

Btw, that viewpoint comes to you from almost 15 yrs experience, as a direct care provider, I've seen some of the sickest people in the world, unfortunately most of em are out here ,not getting any treatment

lol why? i guess you have to go through what im going through in order to understand.

i have no shame in going to one. ive been kinda scared to call one up and get an appointment, but i finally went through with it and im happy that im going today. i honestly cant wait to get this problem of mine fixed. if you guys really wanna know why im going, ill tell you. i suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder. im sure some of you have already seen threads of mine which talked about it.

i have no shame at all with letting complete strangers know that im going to a shrink. if youre going to judge me by that, then fine so be it. nothing wrong with that. im not schizo, or anything like that. i suffer from a anxiety disorder, nothing more. im sure a lot of ppl from this forum suffer from some type of anxiety disorder, be it general anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder. i believe that many computer geeks usually have some form of mild social anxiety disorder or something similar to it. why do you think they stay at home all day long 24/7 on their computer? maybe not, who am i to judge.

I think most of us by now would realize yellowplastic is a threadcrapper extraordinaire.

Nocturnal, do what you think can help you. No shame in that, at all.

most computer geeks find routine social exercises pointless. they find small talk boring. they find social hierarchies artificial and oppressive.

choosing not to participate in a system of interaction which one finds distasteful is not a disorder. it is a lifestyle choice.

I used to regularly, but I quit because I didn't know what the drugs were doing to my body and I didn't think the therapy was helping. Now, after several months, I'm going back because I feel much worse. It does not help to ignore problems, it makes them worse. Now, I'm also realizing that my therapist actually gave me good advice - guess I didn't realize it at the time.

Hey man, congrats to you for making positive steps to overcome your disorder. You're far further on the road to mental health than guys like yellowplastic and gonad because you're comfortable with it and willing to do whatever it takes to get better. That right there is the right attitude to have. Everyone has problems--that much is a given. So when people act like they don't have any (or act like admitting them is emasculating) it actually means that they're still encumbered with what other people think--definitely a roadblock on the path to wellness. Best of luck to ya.

This is plainly false.

If everyone had problems, shrinks would have no idea what normal behavior was. They therefore would be unable to diagnose and treat abnormal behavior.

The need for shrinks presupposes that there are normal people and normal behaviors. Anyone who differs significantly from these normal people with the normal behaviors is a fruitcake, and that's why fruitcakes go to the shrink (to get their head fixed).

how am i a "fruit cake" because im going to the shrink?

i think you have a few problems you need to get fixed first before you come off calling everyone who sees a shrink a "fruit cake."

yeah maybe not every single person in the whole entire world has problems, but im sure at least once in their life thry go through some type of depression, or anxiety.

I'm afaid that it's not "plainly false" at all. If I had said that everyone is obsessive/compulsive, or everyone is schizophrenic, then you would be right. All I said is that everyone has problems. I have dealt with enough people in my lifetime to know that for a fact. But they are not the same problems. On one hand you may have someone with an eating disorder who otherwise is the perfect bill of health (physical and mental). On the other hand you have someone who is schizophrenic but physically fit. Then there are drug addicts who have neither eating disorders nor schizophrenia. Of course there are also the unfortunate souls with more than their fair share of problems, but they are in the minority.

Regardless, EVERYONE has issues... no one is perfect, no matter what sort of image they project. You, for instance, seem to want everyone to think you are the picture of mental health, but the very fact that you think it's embarassing to see a therapist is pure 100% Grade-A evidence of a problem right there. Ridiculing others for trying to better their lives? More evidence.

Problem-free people are like unicorns--rumored about but never found.

Nocturnal - don't even waste your time answering his posts. yellowplastic is obviously so insecure about himself that he comes in here to flame everyone and doesn't even make his profile accessible. Anyone who thinks that everyone attending a psychiatrist is a "fruit cake" has serious issues themself!

<< It is like telling everyone that you have a small penis. Even if that is the case, you should keep such things to yourself. >>

Oh yeah and yellowplastic - you might wanna keep the knowledge of your small wang to yourself, that would be pretty embarassing if we all found out about it!

Just out of curiosity, how does your OCD manifest itself? I'm very curious about these types of things. If you don't feel comfortable answering, that's okay.

i believe its a chemical imbalance. and some psychological part too.
