I've been thinking of going the other way actually but here are some things that so far are holding me back (on VZW with OG Droid currently):

Google Nav, plus car mode (customizable) with the dock.
^ one touch for route home, one touch to call the wife, integrated with contacts
plus my bedside dock
custom home screens, seriously
investment in paid apps so far of course
ties in with above, seems like more iphone apps cost money
a smooth, responsive, consistent user interfa--wait nevermind

I think both have pluses and minuses. I wish Google would pull their heads out of their asses and try to finish something occasionally and respond to user input. Be nice if they just gave up and inked a deal with Amazon to handle all the media/app type stuff in exchange for some wee little ads here and there.

edit: friend of mine went from iphone (3gs I think) to Blackberry Torch. So there's weirdo's of every kind out there.

One main thing that was holding me back from switching was the voice dictation in Android and Google Nav. I use it all the time, and for free, IMO, I don't think it can be beat.

The iOS to BB isn't that weird. Maybe they've been wanting to try something new for a while and love the idea of BBM (that's the only reason I can really see to go to a BB again). Haha.

I also agree with your last statement about Google not finishing anything. I just wish they would put stricter guidelines and more polish so developers are all... oh my gosh.. need to develop for this instant! D: D:

You have to pay for Navigation, there a handful of good ones. Navigon's MobileNavigator is a popular one.

Google Navigation does not work without adequate data access, while these programs work offline. They are also far more advanced in routing, options, avoiding tolls, highways, etc.

Voice control is more limited but works fine:

http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/voice-control.html

plus my bedside dock

There's Apps for that

custom home screens, seriously

Not yet, you'll have to jailbreak

investment in paid apps so far of course

$10 worth of investments? The quality of apps on the iOS is astoundingly stratospherically higher. I've spent probably $100+ on Apps. Most are productivity ones for my iPad 2 but many of them can be bought once and installed on your iPhone and iPad.

You don't really get much with Android devices. You get um.. Flash, I guess.

Google is on the decline it seems.

Google Voice command works the same way on the iPhone. It's just an app.

$60 for that? If I'm gonna spend more than a few bucks I'll splurge and get a device like a Garmin that isn't tied to 1 brand phone. I personally haven't had any issues with Google Maps' navigation, but I only use it occasionally.

I've "only" got ~$45 worth of investments in Android apps and I consider myself pretty cheap. Especially since the Amazon App Store has a different paid app for free every day, I've gotten a few good ones that way that I otherwise would've paid for.

IMO you get all of the good things about iOS minus the Apple brand plus choice in hardware and software and customization. 3 major things Apple will never give you.

Uh... no. The whole point of having GPS on your phone is so you don't have to have a dedicated one that requires costly map upgrades and is an extra device. Much like how we like having MP3 on our phone.

Navigation works on all iOS devices, which means iPad Navigation as well.

You don't get any of the good of iOS (Application quality, operating system refinement) and choice of Grey plastic and Black Plastic. Customization is useless when it doesn't yield productivity. You can customize the crap out of a Honda Civic but it's still a Honda Civic.

I can't view this link at work. Does it have all of the functionality that it has on Android? I mean navigation, directions, play songs, search, text, call people, etc?

I know Apple purchased some voice dictation company (can't remember the name). So I'm assuming in iOS 5, you'll have A LOT more control with voice which I'll be extremely happy about. I just love the voice control Android has. Whilst I drive, I use the voice-to-text feature all the time so that's one big thing for me. I realize there are apps out there that allow you to do that, but this is built in native to mostly everywhere in the device.

I said one brand phone, I suppose I should've said device to include the iPads as well. But for me an extra device is a red herring since I've only ever used it in my car so leaving a GPS device in my car isn't an issue. Map upgrades are indeed expensive, but I've used several year old Garmins from work without issue so I doubt I'd pay for them myself either.

I have some gripes with the apps I use, but very few so I don't see the Apple "quality and refinement" as a feature, in fact I see the limitations as much more problematic. I setup ActiveSync on a few iPads here and absolutely hated the keyboard text input system and mail UI. Some people think they're intuitive, but when I handed it to one of our sales guys he just looked at me like "What do I do now?".

I get a lot of use of the multiple desktops in Launcher Pro and widgets in general, they very much yield productivity for me and saying otherwise just seems like you're an Apple fan that won't concede that their product might be missing something.

And you might not like the look of a Honda Civic, but you can't argue that if you tweak the gears and engine you can get my HP and speed out of it. An Apple branded car would never let you do that so yes, in that are the Civic wins.

went from 3GS to HTC Inpspire 4G on at&t. depending on which benchmark you look at, it's faster than the iphone 4 in some areas. cost me $20 at costco. there are some sideloading apps that let you install anything you want without rooting

the HTC desktop app will even let you sync stuff from iTunes

overall i like it and won't go back to iphone, but only because i have an ipad 2 and use it a lot more than my phone

new samsung phone looks nice but i'm going to stay with my cheapo phone. atrix is OK as well

pretty much all HTC phones across carriers are identical to each other except for the radio chip and name. otherwise HTC has 3 screen sizes of phone they develop around and change a little every few months and release it under a different name

I switched from Apple to Windows Phone 7. Both devices have pros and cons but I would never, ever go back to Apple because of iTunes. Removing that pile of shit from my machine was one of the most glorious moments of my computing life.

Its funny that you turned around on it, since you posted this

Much like GA, I went from an iPhone to WinMoPho, and I really enjoy the device. I have had it from 6 months and still make mistakes on teh keyboard, but I think that is just me, as most everyone sings its praises.

And much unlike GA, I would go back to Apple because I am not crazy about the Zune software or the current state of updates on WinMoPho.

Funny, reading that thread you see my progression from "eh itunes is fine" to "fffffuuuuuuu..." as I use itunes more :p Zune isn't perfect but it is over 9000 times better than itunes.

Yep, WinPho7 is a bit of a mess and while I like the device a lot I'm not 100% sure my next phone will be WinPho7. The update stuff made me rage hard and there are other issues. Might try one of the higher-end Android devices for my next phone. I'm even considering saving some money and going back to a dumb phone, as I don't find myself using the smart phone features all that much.

iPhone scrolls smooth as hell, and the UI is buttery in how responsive it is. The best Android out there doesn't come close. The apps on iOS are so much better, it's not even close to comparable. As for choice of software I'm not sure what you're referring to, I will give you that Android's more customizable out of the box. But on the flip the UI's super laggy. My Droid 1 OC'ed to 1.1ghz still doesn't move well. On the flip my iPod Touch 1G's about twice as smooth. Both OS's have pluses and minuses, everything I went over are apparently things Google will never give us.

I guess it goes both ways huh? Phandroids see things thru colored glasses too. With my Moto Droid I don't feel I got anything I liked about my iPhone, but hay that's just me.

None of that contradicts the 3 things I said that Apple will never give you. And while I will admit that Launcher Pro does lag occasionally on my Dinc, it's not very common and I think it's more than a fair tradeoff for not having to be stuck in Apple's walled garden. I think the issues with your Droid 1 are more Mototola's fault, the X's we have at work are laggy and buggy too, but other software like HTC Sense and CyanogenMod doesn't have half of the problems Motoblur does.

I got a Droid X on gingerbread which made it quite a bit more responsive. Things are pretty good on this side actually...totally loving the free google voice and navi. I mainly miss the better app store and selection ie I want Digg/TheEconomist/Civlization Revolutions for Android.

Edit: Oh and the default interface is def better with iPhone but if you spend some time setting up LauncherPro/Widgetlocker then it can get pretty comparable and more customizable.

I just went the other way, Android to iPhone. Android is just getting too fragmented. I see the same things happening that killed Windows Mobile. If carriers made custom interfaces optional and stop trying to discourage the amateur development community, I could see myself going back, but with locked bootloaders and lousy skins like Motoblur, I wont go back.

The thing I like about iOS is that out of the box, it's simple and ready to go. My 2 yo uses our iOS devices without any problems. I wish Apple was a little more open to outside development from the jailbreak community and wasn't so strict with app store policies. But after having an Android app sign me up for a $10/month text messaging service without telling me, I am glad Apple does look over everything pretty well.

I considered this, but decided to go with iphone for several reasons. I'm not interested enough to read the whole thread (sorry), but wanted to point out that I did learn from the AT&T store that if you upgrade to a 4g phone, you can't take your iphone unlimited data plan with you. I've seen some reports that people did, but those might be lies too. Just wanted to let you know, and sorry if it's a repeat.

Yeah, that was some bullshit when I found out. But, they realized they can make a shitload of money this way, and also that people like me who stream netflix on the 3g network are using several GB of data.

Their new plans top out at $45 for 4GB. I pay $30 for unlimited, why in the hell would I switch?

Edit: I also considered jumping to Verizon bc I think AT&T are being rather shitty about that. But just a little digging revealed that Verizon actually intends to do the same thing. I think they are offering their $29.99 unlimited plan just to siphon off AT&T users and then rape them the same way AT&T is trying.
