Austin is a great place, i highsly suggest that you move here. This is my fifth year here and even thought my jobs have threatened to take me other places, i always end up back here. A problem, of course, is traffic. But, the bus system is great. The night life is great, there a college chicks to dig on, there are my areas to live in, each with its own personality, UT football games are a blast. i could go on and on, with very little to complain about.

why are you moving here? are you from texas?

THE ULTIMATE AUSTIN JOKE
Three guys in a bar: an Aggie, a guy from California and a guy from Austin.
They drink and get a little rowdy. Suddenly, completely without warning,
the Aggie grabs a bottle of tequila, unscrews the top, takes a good swig, and
throws the bottle in the air. He then jerks a Colt 45 pistol out of his
pocket and shoots the bottle, spraying tequila all over everything and everybody.
The patrons at the bar shout, "Hey bud, why'd you waste that tequila?"

The Aggie says "Heck, it's just tequila, us Aggies go across the
border all the time and get all the tequila we want."
Not to be out done, the Californian whips out a corkscrew and uncorks a
bottle of wine. He pours a little bit into a glass, swirls it in the glass,
sniffs, comments on the tart insolence of its bouquet, sips, tosses the
bottle in the air, nicks it with a round from a silly little chrome plated
pistol, and showers a couple of patrons at the bar with wine.

The patrons, upset by the casual waste and general lack of concern for their
safety, express their displeasure and astonishment, to which the
Californian replies, "Well, I'm from the Napa Valley, and we have more than enough wine
where I come from."

The Austinite, a quiet observer to this point, touches the crystal hanging
from his neck, checks out his tattoo, flips back his ponytail, puts down
his guitar, and asks the bartender for a Shiner. He pops the top off the bottle
of Shiner beer, hammers it back, throws the empty bottle into the air, pulls
the 9mm Beretta, takes careful aim, shoots both the Californian and the
Aggie, and catches the falling bottle.

The patrons scream in utter disbelief, "Why did you do that!?!"
The Austinite replies, "I'm from Austin We've already got too many Aggies
and WAY too many Californians, but glass bottles, now, those can be recycled!"

Ohhhh, Renob is from CA  I suppose we can take another Californian. Welcome. :D

Heh, moving from the Bay Area to Austin, you will feel like a millionaire.

We have some friends that live up by Red Rock/Georgetown area. They love Austin, a person would have to drag them away kicking and screaming to get them to leave.

I also have an Aunt that lives about 30 minutes from Austin, and works in Austin, she really likes it as well, but she doesnt really hang around the city much.

Been in Austin for about 6 years, and yes, even in that amount of time, I have seen a lot of growth in the city. Having UT here is only one big factor.

But yea, Austin's a great city! I'm more than sure that you'll like it here with its abundance of things to do and see. My only qualm is in the traffic as someone else has mentioned. I'm sure it's not as bad as LA or other huge metropolitans, but dang, it still can get frustrating...especially since they seem to be perpetually repairing and constructing on the same areas of roads or highways. At least it's not Houston crap traffic, that's for sure.

Best wishes to you and your wife when you move here. I know you'll enjoy it, considering how the cost of living is lower than the Bay. You're rich now! RICH!

P.S. Oh yea, enjoy the weather over there while you can...it's hotter over here. :)

Moved to the area in 95 and to the city in 98. Drove for two years between Austin and Fort Hood until retirement from Uncle Sam in 2000.

Pro: Abundance of diversity. Opportunity - although this aspect has declined considerably with the recession and tech bust - there are bucks to be made if you hustle. Education (UT, SWT, ACC, St. Edwards all offer evening classes). Clean and centralized location. Good quality of life has emerged since all the "techie tourists" were laid off and moved away. Adequate public services. Weather is excellent, especially in the spring and fall. Excellent music scene. Broadband access everywhere (Time Warner, Grande, Southwestern Hell DSL, Earthlink, Covad). LOL, Birch has a full T-1 on special right now for $440 per month. Wide variety of resturants.

Con: Unending property tax increases. The heat during the summer can bother some people. This summer was an exception. Shallow, superficial personalities and character of many yuppie knuckleheads who relocate here leaves much to be desired. As NightFlyerGTI indicates, there are liberals everywhere. Cost of living will be a factor if you don't land a decent job. Working fast food or retail won't cut it.

Wasn't it Mark Twain who said "The Coldest Winter I ever Spent was a Summer in San Francisco"? Fortunately the greater SF Bay Area enjoys the most comfortable climate inthe USA if not the world. If there is one thing I can't stand is heat and humidity.Having to constantly wipe the sweat from your brow is miserable. I would prefer it to rain 365 days than have to endure sticky heat

well, don't move to austin. or houston. in houston not only does it rain half the time but its hot and sticky the other half. you'd have thought the allen brothers would have picked a better place to build a city than a swamp.

It's great except for the traffic and construction. Other than that no cons really for me, I love it. :)
