Anyone here know anything about ceiling fans?

I just installed a ceiling fan in my bedroom. For some reason, the fan only works on the low setting. The light works, and the fan does fine on the low setting. When you pull the chain to kick it up the medium or high, it just stops. I hate to take this thing down and erturn it, as it's heavy as hell and was a pain in the ass to wire. Any idea on what may e the problem?

Either the mulitple pole switcfh is mis-wired, defective or a problem in the way you wired it up.

The switch should be able to be removed without taking the complete unit down.

likely a mis-wired of defective switch. Not really something they'll send you to replace yourself though. You'll either take the risk of doing it and finding the problem yourself, or return it.

By wiring mistake, do you mean a internal wiring problem or something that I did when I installed it?

Could be either. You may not have all the connections proper.

Check your wiring connections aginst the instruction mainual carefully.

If everything is OK, then contact the manufacturer CSR and ask for advice/assistance.

You can buy the switches at your hardware store. Go buy one and see if that fixes the problem.

Are you doubting my mad wiring skills? :|

:D Is there a panel or something I can remove off the fan, or will I have to take it down? It's this one.

Wiring skills can not be that bad - You are still able to post - normally that does not happen when you have been toasted with a 110 surge.:Q

Looking at the unit referenced, you should be able to get to the switch box by removing the light assembly section. The switch box should be just where the pull string enters the unit.

To check your wiring, you may have to remove the complete unit. I suspect that you connected the wiring up at the ceiling mount. That is what the CSR will first recommend. You might as well do that to prevent yourself from looking like a fool just in case.

If you did mis-wire, then fix it and do NOT kick yourself until you have reached the floor.

How is it possible to miswire the fan? Don't most of them have a black, white, and green wire? The switch connection is generaly a plug that only goes in one way so whats there to screw up? Even if you hook up the black and white wires wrong it shouldn't affect the switch? I say it's a defective switch in the fan.

forgot to tell you I was posting from the hospitals wireless connection. :D

I will try and do what I can to troubleshoot it. Will the switch be about the size of a matchbox? Does it have to be directly connected to the pull chain? There is a small black box in the cup on top of the light kit. I wonder if that is the switch?

You're going to have to take it down to fix it anyway. If taking it down is your biggest concern, either deal with the problem or take it down and return it. If you're going to take it down, don't bother doing the work yourself.

The blackbox is the switch.

It will need to be disconnected after removing a couple of holding screws and the knob that the pull chain comes through.

Take the box to the local hardware store and get a replacement. Depending on the type of store, they may be able to actually test it.

Or waste a week and let the maker ship you a new switch after talking to a CSR.
