Wiring skills can not be that bad - You are still able to post - normally that does not happen when you have been toasted with a 110 surge.:Q
Looking at the unit referenced, you should be able to get to the switch box by removing the light assembly section. The switch box should be just where the pull string enters the unit.
To check your wiring, you may have to remove the complete unit. I suspect that you connected the wiring up at the ceiling mount. That is what the CSR will first recommend. You might as well do that to prevent yourself from looking like a fool just in case.
If you did mis-wire, then fix it and do NOT kick yourself until you have reached the floor.
