AMEN and for what people think when they see my son and I pulling out HT wires or a 10 foot poster from the dumpster I can really care less. Its free money for all I am concerned.

Wait wait lemme get this straight... You're disabled, yet, you have the ability to go dumpster diving... I'm not trying to be an arse, just trying to understand a little better.

I have three herniated disks in my back which cause pain all the time and some times I am unable to walk. I dont jump in the dumpsters I take a peek. Make sure there is no glass, and if he wants to go in he can. I sit in my wheelchair all day every day and I haventleft my house in atleast 3 months. I needed to get out and do something. What better. Suck up the pain for the hour, get out, have fun with my son, and get some free sh!t.

That sucks 🙁 I understand you see it as having a good time with your kid, but there's gotta be a better way to do so.

This thread sparked my curiousity, so I was reading online about all the different Dumpster Diving techniques. Apparently, the legality of it is regional, and in 1988 the Supreme court decided once someone leaves something in the trash it is not a crime to take it.

Pretty cool stuff, anyways, best of luck on your future dives, and hope your discs in your back heal pronto!

The truth? If you were a strong man able to walk I would probably say what you are doing is wrong.

However, given your situation and seeing your two kids smiling and enjoying the catch. ... well good find!

You're a dad and a dad needs to do all he can do to support his children. I believe you are doing just that.

Thank you and you should of heard and seen my wife's face too. At first when I took my son and we went she thought I was crazy. Then when I came home with stuff from dollar bills she told me any time I wanted to go and do it to get out for me to go do it 🙂

Dumpster diving is a lucrative hobby. You just have to pick your battles. Apartment complexes == no (Needles, diapers, beer cans). Behind Best Buy == OMGYES (Returned merchandise!)

wtg funboy! I used to DD all the time, I still catch myself peeking as I drive past dumpsters sometimes. I still have a cardboard dumpster I hit up whenever I'm shipping stuff on ebay. Don't worry about the idiots talking about your son, they don't know your son, and they don't know you. I recall your fs/t posts about the problems you had with your car and money situations. I know how it feels to want to have the best for your children and not be able to give it to them. Does Burlington coat factory usually have shipping peanuts all the time? I might have to look into that, I hate paying $10 to $20 for a bag at office depot.

edro13 and I went a few times, found some good stuff at compusa. he might still have the pics of our grand evening. i'll check that out!

Thanks and were slowly seeing light. As for the peanuts you will find like a 4' tall bag filled with them along with crap they just pitch out that may have a chip or a den but still very good condition.

Where'd you find all the chocolate?

It was in blockbusters can sitting on top all of still in is box unopened! I lifted the box and it had weight opened it up and about craped my pants. $2 a box new (when not clearanced) x 51 Swoops and balls =$102 in swoops alone. I dont even know what each rope would cost new but it is a full box. And then there is the two bags of combos (we all ate last night) at $2 new. So we made out big time just in chocolate. My wife reminded me yesterday that she told me she wished she had some chocolate and I come home with all that. She got her wish 🙂

We had a Hostess outlet store near us in college, we'd go at least once a week for bread and stuff. They'd put all the stuff that was a day away from expiring on a table near the front and heavily discount it. One day, my buddy asked what they did with the stuff that expired, and the women working told him that they throw it out. Apparently they could see the gears turning in his head, because shortly after that they said "we have to cut open all the packages first"

My buddy still wanted to hit up the dumpster - I told him no way. The whole time I was thinking about that Seinfeld episode where George gets caught eating the bearclaw out of the garbage 😀

My buddy goes out once a month and has brought in some tremendous amount of goods ... so much so that I just HAD to see if I can go along on next months run. His last haul netted the following:
Belkin 54G wireless router - NIB
Belkin USB 54G wireless USB adapter (2 of them)
leather chairs
lamp
Norton A/V 2005 (5 copies)
several Linux distros (10 copies)
3' and 6' USB cables - dozens of these

Best time to go is a Sunday morning at the end of the month, as it appears that ANY returned merchandise is tossed out at this time. The Belkin router was new in box and we have no idea why it was tossed. Obviously, YMMV, and some months you won't see anything worth picking up, but its a great way to pick up freebies.

Hint to anyone worried about the legality: If someone asks what you are doing, say you are looking for boxes to help a friend move.

Only one big problem. most of the newer buildings and comanies like walmart, bestbuy, circuit city, target, and such all went compactor crushing it all. You need to go to older type places and very old stores to get the goods. And if you dont want to it the food thats fine. More for me 🙂

Like I said if it is unopened its just expired and tottaly safe to eat. I wouldnt reccomend getting it from a can with rotting fruit or meats for then the pakage will be coated with bacteria and once you touch it and open it you may get sick. Just sitting there on top with cardboard and papers I am all over it and dont care what others think, it was free 🙂
Havent gotten sick yet 😉

 Do you Ebay some of the stuff you find? Hell, you got the packing peanuts...

No I dont ebay any of it but my wife has kept some of the art crap. I have sold some of the dvd cases and have another 400 or so I need to relist. and the peanuts I use all the time. Got about half a huge bag left. I have given some of the wires away to people that needed some.

Anyone that does alot of shipping needs to go dumpster diving. You get all the packing supplies you could need. Boxed of all diffferent sizes already folded to go into your trunk of truck.

Nice catch! I still go diving on occassion. It's a great hobby, and not something that just bums do like people will suggest to you. I think it's great that you're teaching your kid a valuable lesson about recycling. Just be safe!

ALWAYS SAFE. i would never put my son in a position that he may get hurt. That and I ask him if he feels like going in it and getting the stuff. If he says no I dont push him but like I said I check it out before hand so he hasnt said no. he gets a kick out of jumping in and pulling out free goods.

When I was a teenage I would go through residential garbage. I found tv's, vcr's, refigiators, electric gutairs, and a plethera of other stuff. All of it I would take home. go through it all during the week throwing away what I couldnt fix. And at the end of the month have a garage sale and make bank. Almost all profit. just the gas used and my time repairing electronics if it needed it. I did that and bought cars from people who didnt know anything about them or couldnt repair them just to get rid of them. I was one of the only kids in highschool that owned atleat 4 cars at a time and was the go to guy if you needed a cheap ride.

Before I got hurt I would buy cars. need tune up, brakes, a battery, sometime nothing. I never paid more then $500 for my cars and most times about 80% of them I paid less then $100. I would fix them and sell then for a quick $2-$300 profit. Cant tell you how many times doing that has pulled me out of my slump. Have $500 left to my name no sign of anythign comeing in soon I would go buy a car. Fix it in 2 days sell it for profit. Do it again. By the months end I would have a couple grand in my pocket.

I wish I wasnt hurt I would do this everyday 🙂 HEY anyone close to the Hammond area wanna go out often if you drive? We can do 50/50 😉
I wont be able to jump out as often but can give you pointers on how this is done and for the rush.

WTF? Why would you eat sh|t you found in a dumpster?

You havent lived till you ate a half eaten burger covered in slime goo and maggots 🙂

Its all sealed and sitting ontop wht could possably be wrong with it other then it is expired? And that expiration date is nothing more then a fresh date. the stuff inside could still go several months.

If I'm driving along and someone has something out on the curb, I might stop and grab it. But I don't actually go find a dumpster and hop in...
