I've been using fireworks for a few months now, and just got photoshop last week, and have been reading tutorials like a mad man. Iam really getting into it, and was actually thinking of maybe taking some courses or something, Right now iam in community college for finance. ARe there any kind of graphic certifications? how do they determine who to hire and what not? work examples? just wondering if i could ream a lil info off of the great guys here at ATOT, thanks!

but i'm here to warn you that graphic design is very competitive. it's hard to find job related to graphic design because there are several graphic designers. so, consider yourself one of the competitives for the graphic design job in the future.

i was supposed to major in graphic design but opted to major in industrial design instead.

oh and fyi, most graphic designing companies don't use photoshop.

heh. I was actually on the software forum and they told me the corp's use photoshop. If they dont pshop what do they use? I know they use other software for 3d models/architecture, but what are the other alternatives to pshop?

the graphic design program at my private university uses illustrator instead photoshop.

edit: there are several art softwares.

Photoshop isn't that vector friendly as you have to make a few extra clicks.

hm.. Well ill consider it, I guess I'll keep it as a hobby for now. Iam really not that great at hand drawing either.

that's actually the hardest part.

start with sketches (hand drawing) then do the final sketches on the computer. if you are talent at drawing then you are superb!

i'm lucky i took art classes when i was young before i chose to major in industrial design.

well i wouldnt consider illustrator a replacement for photoshop... if u know ur softwares, illustrator is vector art and photoshop is for raster images...

im curious what the job market is like for a 3d artist/modeler/animator...

Know these software:

Illustrator
Photoshop
InDesign
Quark
Flash
Dreamweaver

And design theory. As with everyone on anandtech, everyone thinks they are a designer because they have photoshop. And no, photoshop is not meant for logos!
