Anyone here ever had a vasectomy?

I'm going on Aug. 6th to have this surgury as me and my wife do not want anymore kids. after our second child who is now 5 weeks. She had planned to have a tubal ligation done the day after the birth but there was a problem with her blood counts and her doctor said he would not do it for atleast 3 months. He said that it would be easier for me to have it done than for her to have to go back in 3 months. I took a while to find a doctor who would do ot on me because of my age (23), the only that would is a female doctor that agreed to do it after talking to me and my wife. I have a few concerns that I want to get cleared up before I go.

1. What's the recovery time from something like this? I do very physical work and I can't afford to miss too many days.

2. Do they numb you from the the waist down. My biggest fear is getting an erection when the doctor is working.

Ever thought of asking your doctor these questions since that's what they're there for!

And if she doesn't know, well - i wouldn't trust her near my johnson.

One of my friends had it done back in the spring. He was out of work for 2 weeks, and he has a desk job. It took over a month before he felt normal again.
You are awake during the operation, so I don't think your second question will be an issue,

I sent you a pm with a link to a pretty graphic website that explains the procedure with photos in graphic detail.

You should be sedated enough that you won't stand @ attention when the physician starts manipulating.

I just had mine a few weeks ago.
#1) First day is rough, make no mistake. You wont move much, other then from the bed / couch to the bathroom / kitchen. Second day, light movement, then slowly gets better. I have a deskjob, I took 1 day off plus the weekend. By the end of day 3, I could move around pretty much normal, but was careful on sitting or going up or down stairs (If you go to fast, the Twins start to bounce....)
#2) They give you a local pain killer. Essentially, an injection in your sack. The only spot its numb is the area to be worked on.

On the whole, I would say a week to really be back up to near full speed. I had 2 injections and 2 cuts, 1 for each side. Natrually, time to heal and how its done will vary by person and doctor. If you do very physical work, I'd be looking at a week. Really just talk to your doctor as to how its done, and your boss to see how much time off you can take.

ditto to what shockwave said...that is spot on

of course, the assistant helping the doctor had to be very hot.....your flagpole will not be riding high...if anything, just the opposite

It's not a big deal, really. I was surprised how painless and easy the procedure was. I drove 30 miles to and from the docs office. Had the weekend off and all was great by Monday. Good luck!!

A friend of mine had it done. One of his boys swelled up to the size of an orange....terrible pain, bleeding too. Eventually he had another operation to fix it. Had to be knocked out for this one, though.

The lesson he learned was NOT to let a GP do this type of thing, go to a urologist. He also found out it's not so easy suing for malpractice, doctors don't like to testify against one another.

I had one....here's my story:

Our local vasectomy specialists name is Dr. Dick Tapper (I'm NOT making this up...here's his office: LINK). He's supposed to be the best snipper in the tri-state area, so I feel pretty confident going in. The day before my surgery the asked I shave as much hair off the scrotal area as I can (eeck....I get nervous putting a razor around "the boys"). So, I do that, the next day I go to work, leave at 2:00pm, and go to the clinic to have the procedure done. A male nurse leads me into a room where I have to remove all my clothes and put on a stupid hospital gown (the kind where your butt shows. It was OK though...I have a nice butt heheheh). Anyway, the nurse was making my gay-dar go off like crazy (talked with a lisp and a limp wrist, bounced when he walked, etc), so I was VERY uncomfortable at that point. He then has me lie on a table and puts my legs in stirrups (*gulp*), and then grabs something and starts rooting around "down there". I ask what he's doing, and he said that I missed some hair and he needed to remove it before the doctor came in. Dr. Tapper comes in and gets to work. First he takes out a needle that I SWEAR was the size of my arm, grabs my sack, and JAB!!!! AAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! That OFFICIALLY was one of the worst types of pain I have ever felt. It felt better a minute later as the numbing agent set in. The doctor and nurse then began to chatter: "Oh good...a big one! These are so much easier than the small ones. Yeah...he's got lots of room to work with here...." They were talking about my goods like they were a slab of meat or something! I was thinking like "Uhh...excuse me! There's a person that can here you attached to those parts!" Next, there was an incision, which I barely felt at all. It was a small 1/2" cut on the right side. The doctor then grabs a miniature MEAT HOOK and latches on and pulls something that felt like I got kicked in the nads by a steel boot! I tense and moan in pain, and they scramble to get more numbing agent. "Must have missed a spot..." the nurse non-chilantly mentions. (Duh! You think??!!!). So, I feel a bit better, but my insides feel weird and twisted. I then smell smoke, and I asked "What's burning???" "Oh, we're cauterizing your severed Vas Deferens before we tie them." Oooooooookkkaaaaaayyyyyyy. They stitched me up and I was done in about 20 minutes. They gave me some antibiotics and suggested I keep frozen vegetables in the area for the first day to keep the swelling down. Then the worst part: "Oh....and you don't want to have sex for at least two weeks." Yikes!!!! That was probably the toughest part---lots of cold showers for those two weeks 🙂

The thing you need to remember after having one is you need to rest for three days afterwards. No walking, mowing the grass, sports, etc. You're going to FEEL like you can do it, but 30 minutes into it, your body well tell you "What the hell are you doing!" and make you sit down. From what I hear, mine went rougher than most do, but it came out fine. And the best part? UNRESTRICTED NOOKIE for the rest of your life! 😀

As with all unnatural surgeries, there can be complications. Its known as PVP, Post Vesectomy Pain. The majority dont have it, but those that do will require another surgery, one alot more invasive.

The risks for tubal ligation are to great.
The risks for vesectimies arent as great, but they are still there. If you are part of that 5% of so, your going to go through a whole lot of hurt, and plumbing problems.

Neither one is worth it IMHO.

Huh? The surgery is very safe and is a very minor procedure. 1 in 9000 have any sort of complications, and most of those are from not following their doctor's recommendations (resting, taking antibiotics, ejaculating too soon, etc). 1 in 1000 require a second procedure because the tubes may heal back together and the knot that was tied isn't tight enough (which is why you're required to submit samples 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after the surgery). I got these stats from the FDA pamphlet they gave me (I happened to have it in my desk drawer for some reason).

I was seriously considering this surgery before i read this thread.

OMG i really hate needles and the thought of someone poking my privates?

anyway, i'm going to have to start looking at alternatives i think.

When I had mine done it was about 100 below zero in the operating room and the nurse scrubbed me down with all the gentleness of Mike Tyson during foreplay. I believe that what I was scrubbed with was approximately 100>225 grit range. Getting a woodie will be the last thing for you to worry about I assure you.

The most painful thing was the first 2 injections of the local. I have a pain threshold that anyone would be envious of, but, christ almighty it was damn near more than a mere mortal could take without screaming for vengeance and fire to rain down on all who surrounded me.

Every bump the car hit on the ride home was the equivalent of being bayoneted in the nads.

2 days on the couch and things were a bit better. A week later it was much better. Sudden pangs of sharp pain would occasionally happen for about 10 weeks or so.

I hope you like the color purple as well.😛

All in all it was worth it. Have a great time !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ROFL... I know this thread isn't a laughitng matter but Fritzo's and 308nato's color discriptions were just too much. They fall into the catatgory of "it's funny 'cause it didn't happen to me." 🙂
