Is it preventable or is it genetic? Is it a real liability when it comes to athletics?

I was looking at my son and daughter's feet and they seem kind of flat. I'm wondering if the condition changes over time.

Mine are extremely flat, been that way since I was born. I ran track in high school for three years and never noticed any major problems other than one bout of shin splints.

New Balance shoes seem to fit me best because of the minimal arch in them. :)

I do. I've always had them, but I don't know anything about preventing them or if they're genetic. Its a real pain when it comes to athletics. I can't run for a long period of time without my feet killing me. However, I have orthotics which help immensely.

I have these as well but they seem to hurt instead of help in most occasions. Maybe they were made incorrectly? I don't know.

I'm flat footed..and I find it hard to run for too long..also find it difficult to rollerblade/ice skate..the feet always bend it..and it pains like a mofo after a while.

Weird responses. I guess it effects everyone differently.

I have flat feet and HAVE to put arch supports in my shoes, or my ankles kill me.

Once the arch supports are in, no problems running or sports.

I am also flat-footed. My mother always told me when I was a kid that I would never be able to get into the army because of my flat feet.

i have very flat feet. broke a foot and fractured the other at this same time a few months ago, having flat feet made it harder to recovery because of improper weight distribution

I have flat feet, and I ran cross country without arch support. I bested the course with a 17:40. Of course, I had shin splints like none other by the end of every season

My boyfriend has EXTREMELY flat feet.

As far as everyone's (his family) concerned..it's genetic (for him)...b/c his grandfather has flat feet also.

He can't find sneakers that fit...b/c his feet are flat..when he steps down...no arch = the foot kinda spreads out. Has to get extra wide shoes..but even then it still doesn't fit.

went to see a foot doctor..got his feet molded...getting custom shoes made.

He's sad b/c he can't really do much...(ie running, etc)...b/c he gets awful blisters.

So hopefully the custom shoes will help.

flat footed too. i didn't have problems, but have orthodics as a prevention. as my father is flat footed too, and over time, it got bad for him. my mom is just the opposite, high arch.

i have two pairs of orthodics, they made the second one as a copy of the first cast... it doesn't feel right. same thing w/ my mom. just a tidbit if anyone is getting orthodics.

i'm finding now if i stand around for a bit, my feet can't take it (w/o my orthodics).

I have low arches... and I did track as well as other sports... It hurts from time to time... but just the tendon that stretches accross the flat of the foot.... sucks to flat footed... and its in the family...

Also, as for correction of flat feet.... there are some exercises that supposedly helps... it involves picking up a small ball with your toes... heard it works best for growing children... not so much for adults...

I'm flat footed and have been since birth. Don't know about genetics but I'm the only person in my family with flat feet.

Yeah... pretty flat footed... my parents were weird and during the beginning of my childhood SQUEEZED my feet into small shoes.

We couldn't afford much those days, but when I bought bigger shoes after I couldn't put up with it anymore... my feet exploded. I wonder if being flat footed a tad is a result of that.

Is it true that you can't get into the military with flat feet?

"Flat feet" is a catchall term that refers to a lot of different conditions.

All babies have flat feet.

My son has flat feet with normal arches but no support so that when he puts his weight on his feet everything goes down. It really messes him up - he developed serious arthritis in his knees hips and legs because of it - and exercises don't help, in fact make it worse, because his support things (ligaments, muscles, tendons) aren't built quite right.

He can't possibly stand still because he doesn't have any way to balance without moving his feet. That got him in a lot of trouble back in grade school :frown: but then we got the doctors onto the school and they stopped harassing him.

I have flat feet with low arches and I wear orthotics and I never was a great athlete but I'm fine. I notice it when I stop wearing the orthotics for a while, though.

Sorry to hear about your son. Thanks for the information. As a parent, you always worry about every little thing and yesterday it was the flat feet for me :)

I've had flat feet, not sure if it was genetic or developed though cus I've done a lot of things that involved standing around all day. Used to play basketball, have knee problems but not sure if they are related. To get the right shoes you just have to go to a place that knows shoes. I started buying brooks running shoes, they have been wonderful compared to trying to wear the traditional basketball shoes that have extreme arches in them. MY feet tend to get sore more of ten wen I wear something else but it's usually not that big a deal. I do have to get extra wide shoes though.

I have flat feet. I can remember being young and if I had to stand for long periods of time, my feet would kill me. I generally find that shoes with good arch supports hurt at first, but feel better in the long run. (Usually) Also, I have to buy wide shoes because of the same reason as everyone else. :( Going into cool shoe stores often means no shoes for me. Meh!
