Yes, my brother let his domain run out. For some reason, before renewing it, he searched for it, to see if it was still available, but didn't register it. Some company then bought it before he did. I guess they buy all domains that have been looked up. (We know this because his domain was grasswally.com.....don't ask, it's a name he made up when he was 2, and thought it would be funny to still use it.) Why else would ANYONE buy that name? He went to their website, and they wanted $400 for it. Seems unfair, but I guess it's not.

I had started the website www.monkeyislandpub.com for dave for free.
set a nice little start of a website to start with and did it
for free.
free... pretty much whatever he wanted i said would be free.
this included cgi-bin, emails, autoresponders, perl, php, video
and lots more. a real server with all the bells and whistles...

As my dad and i built the first Island Pub in the 70's i have an affection for it.

Free is not good enough for those that take.

i said he could have 150 megs of space and all for free.

No, Free is not good enough.
posting nasty messages, then lies about why
he wanted me to pay more money for his free project.

The rudeness was quite insulting...

Once i received the nasty comments and I asked him about being insulted, no reply. i removed the offending site.
no reply... i can only say the hidden insults in
dave's conversations are not missed by me.

all the while i was trying to fix my ice storm damage
and get back in my office.

It is not odd that those around here do not call when they have a question,,
they just whisper among themselves..
seems to have taken to the sticks like a branch.

And wondering why he insults and whispers,
yet posts a link to one of my sites on his site. ?? ?? ??

all the while claiming that he does not know how
to set his spam filter or must have added my addy to it.
pfft... just more of his insults that must work on the stupid.

Being who i am, i have forwarded www.monkeyislandpub.com
to his monkeyislandpub.net

too bad, you just can't be nice to some people ...

Wow.

I never asked him for money, have no idea what he is talking about.

If he is talking about for a certified letter maybe to the Registrar?

His e-mails go into my bulk folder so I did in fact miss that he e-mailed me early on.

He choses to not believe me.

At least thats what you say. Did he own it before you or what? And did you try and register it through him or something? BTW, nice work leaving his name on there for all to see.

So he was giving you a 'gift' by providing you with a readymade website without asking you first, and got his panties in a wad when you said thanks, but I'd prefer to do it myself? How long did he register it for? I would just ignore him completely and when the name comes available, pick it up. If he doesn't get the attention he wants from you, he'll probably let it lapse.

I suspect that he thought this would be a cheap form of advertising for himself. It makes no sense otherwise, because who would think it is acceptible to register a domain that he knows he has no legal right to? Or is he bitter about the bar not being in his family anymore and feels the need to control at least some part of the business?

Bryophyte, you cannot let the domain lapse as it will be bought by a true domain squatter the moment it becomes available.

Seems kind of retarded that the guy wants to do all this for you. The best gift he could have given you was to buy the domain and just transfer it to you. His wanting to control it is of no use to you at all. You need full control over the domain to do whatever you want, or else it is pretty much worthless.

Anyone who wants to can get his name and address through the WHOIS info for the domain.

Dave, it sounds like this whole situation could have turned out a lot better if you handled it differently.

That does not surprise me.

Hmm. Well, it'd probably be cheaper to pay the new squatter a finder's fee than to take the guy to court. Isn't there some kind of service that'll basically snipe a domain for you the moment it's available? I suppose that's what the squatters do, so it'd be a waste of time.

A question: which sites allow you to search for available domains without tipping off the damned squatters?

Dave, no offense, but I don't think the web is going to make or break your pub. Local word-of-mouth is going to be what gets you business.

Yes, I know.

I was just using it for schedule of events especially when I have bands.

Some bands are scheduled at least 3 months in advance.
