anyone have digital cable?

I was thinking about upgrading to digital cable (mostly because many of my current 80+ stations have pretty bad interference in them) am also thinking about getting the MLB league pass this season. Anyway, I assumed that by upgrading to digital all my current stations would become crystal clear.

However the customer service rep told me that my current 80+ cable stations would continue to be sent in the current analog signal. And only the new stations which are added when you upgrade will be sent in a digital signal.

Does this sound right? shouldn't the picture quality improve for my current stations?

i thought all mine were digital... hmmm... all i know is i think the box made the picture quality worse

Many cable systems give you all your basic cable channels analog, and the others in all their blocky, overcompressed, digital glory.

Digital cable sucks, you get more channels in the same crappy signal

With the exception of handful of stations the broadcast quality is still the same as analog. As soon as I buy a new house I'm going with DirecTV or DishNet

My Cable company (Charter) Totally switched to digital so we could have reliable high speed Internet.

All depends on the company. My channels below 100 are analog, the ones above that are digital. Across the river, all channels are digital.

I have charter digital cable. It is pretty awful. There is a lot of color banding, lots of skips, and clicks, and dropped frames. It didn't "improve" any of the regular channels. But it shouldn't. Why does everybody assume that "digital quality" is something good?

we have it because its the only way to get HBO now. Oh also we had to buy a $50 amplifier to get channels higher than 40.

well this sucks to hear. I was under the assumption that digital cable=near dvd quality. why did I assume that, because every ad my cable company runs they say you will get a crystal clear digital picture.

I'd go with direct TV, but it's not really an option since I would lose all my local stations, and where I live rabbit ears are not an option due to bad/no reception. And two, my internet bill would be jacked up another $10 bucks if I canceled my cable :frown:

Trying to watch basketball on my sh*tty overcompressed digital cable is very irritating. Way too much motion and compression artifacts. Analog channels look better.

dirctv sucks too, though. i've had both in the last year. maybe its just the crappy channels i'm watching. HBO might be better.

I've got Adelphia digital cable here. Damn near all of the non digital channels don't look that great. However all the digital channels look and sound really good. It's not DVD quality, but it's pretty close. It would be nice if they could do something about the poor quality of the non digital channels though.

i have digital cable. but they raised the price so we might be droping it. we dont watch enough TV to make it worth it.

granted if you have digital cable you get like 80 channels MORE then basic. but all the channels i tend to watch are on basic. though i do watch a few of the discovery channels that are on digital.

I've been told that cable companies will compress the signals so that they use less bandwidth across the system. This will degrade the signal. Some cable companies do it more than others. I have seen digital cable "look" like a dvd and I have seen digital cable look no better then a movie copied onto a vhs tape.

I had TimeWarner cable for a year and just dumped them and went back to satellite.

I found the digital cable picture to be quite pixelated and blocky while satellite is a much sharper, crisper picture.

I have Adelphia digital cable with all the channels and preium packages.. its really nice and the quality is pretty good... we pay about 105 a month for it and the cable modem which is pretty damn expensive... i definlty couldnt live without the cable modem though

Hmm...I guess this thread explains why our Digital Cable picture quality sucks.

BTW, with Digital Cable, you have to use the cable box to change channels, and there's about a one-second to one-and-a-half second delay before the next channel tunes in. Makes fast channel surfing really suck.

I have digital cable, with Time Warner. The picture quality is about the same as when I had regular cable. I do get over 200 channels though.

You must have it with another Adelphia then. I had Adelphia digital and the digital channels were crap. Chock full of decompression artifacts. I remember reading when Tivo and ReplayTV were first hitting the market in all the reviews they talked about having to put up with the compression/decompression artifacts, and that you eventually got used to it. I never did. Of course, I switched to DishNetwork and now I get the artifacts on all the channels since they are all digital now. Watching football games gets rather annoying as the turf looks really funky.

DirecTV sucks in terms of what? It looks a hell a lot better then any cable I've ever seen.

I was under the assumption you'd get digital signals on ALL stations if you subbed to digital cable. If they're saying analog anyway, just go straight to satellite and never turn back.

our digital cables is all perfect lots better than it was befoer the digital and as far as i know everythign is now digital. works great, got a special deal with our cable internet so its even better

We have Charter Communications digital cable. I don't think the quality is much better than analog. But yes, we do get more cable channels (including these Chinese/Spanish-language channels since we live in Monterey Park, CA) and the interactive TV features for checking the weather, news, etc.
