hp just released it at ces i think

expect the first lightscribe drives to be made by hp. or put another way: expect the first lightscribe drives to be unnecessarily expensive. also expect medium manufacturers to drag their feet with releasing lightscribe compatible disc. at least the good news is that verbatim have a lighstscribe media section on their site www.verbatim.com and lacie are making an effort i guess: http://www.avvideo.com/article...ewarticle.jsp?id=29928 (at time of writing, the drives are not available to buy)

anyway, last year hp said that first very first lightscribe drives will only be found in hp systems like this one

I expected it to work on blank DVDs that didn't have any manufacturer's printed labels on them 🙂

I was under the impression that it used a laser to "etch" the image on the disk 🙂

yeah, but since the label was on the data side, if you filled up the cd you wouldn't be able to burn a label. with lightscribe, the data are burned on the data side and the label is burned on the label side

Exactly. Didn't Panasonic or someone market a CD burner that did that?

bah I heard it takes somthing like 1 hour to "scribe" a moderatly sized label. And you can only imagine the price HP will place on their "special" media. And I the POS probably breaks down quickly, and it's ugly and stupid...

Probably not possible considering that a laser etches the image in the same way the disc is written.

I have a Yamaha Burner that can do this. On some CD-R brands you can see it clearly, on others the etching is almost invisible. Don't use it that much though since i mostly have CDs where it doesn't show up.

I just use an Epson R200, which is an inkjet printer that can also print on white or silver printable CD/DVD discs. Price is about the same for blank discs as regular discs.

the price of the printer and the ink is the killer for me

sure lightscribe drives will be a bit more expansive but not by much (here and here)

and the lightscribe discs should become as cheap as the printable ones (one day 😕 )

Review

Takes approximately up to 25 minutes to print in B&W, I'll stick with my Epson R200. I'll wait when results will be in color, print in about 2 minutes, and media cost is affordable. :disgust:
