Anyone have a cat?

How do you get rid of the smell of a litterbox, or at least lessen it. Its terrible, not THAT terrible, but I'm pretty wierd about faint smells, how do I get rid of it? Google turns up alot of pointless stuff that has nothing to do with it. ANy ideas?

i have one cat, but use tidy cats multiple cat scoop litter.

and a litter box with a roof over it. it doesnt smell in the least bit.

I use worlds best cat litter. I only clean the litter box like two times a year. No stinky urine smell. I do scoop the clumps out like 2 - 3 times a week.

Covered litterbox + oust fan next to box works well. Scooped daily and litter replaced weekly.

Scoopable litter+baking soda on bottom of box.

Clean 2x or more a day. Change litter once a week or so.

Kitties like clean boxes anyways. Keeping it clean will cut down on "near misses".

Tempted to get a littermaid. I have two friends that have them and they are wonderful. But for < $80....

I use a covered catbox, Fresh Step cat litter and clean at least once daily.
Brother even remarked how much less it smells for his cat, whose box is in the laundry room. Mine is inside in my bedroom. I never notice it.

I have a covered box, but an oust fan is a great idea. I guess I should clean it more often, like at least every 2-3 days.

if you own your home, you could vent it out side with a motion detector switch and timer.

You all should try worlds best cat litter. It is more expensive but I think it saves you money in the long run, because you do not need to change your litter box often at all. The clumping is awesome and there is no urine smell. I started using it a year ago and have only changed the litter box once and the only time it stinks is when my cat takes a fresh dump.

A friend trained her cats to go in the toliet! Freakin amazing. There's small litter boxes you can buy designed to fit into the toliet while training your cat to go in the pooper.

I find 'cedarific' cat litter to be nice. It's light(bonus), fluffy, and has a nice smell. The cats like it.

Of course, we keep the box in the basement.

we use fresh step scoopable litter too. a covered litter box, and recently added a shallow puppy litter box (the handicapped stall) after one of the cats lost his front leg. hoping to be able to give that one up again soon, but it is proving quite popular (with both cats.. I think the leg-deficient one is the one that still uses the covered box on occasion) so I may be stuck with it. they need scooping more often than when we just used the covered one, mostly because the amputee doesn't bury his stuff anymore. I don't expect that'll change. the boxes live in the mudroom so they're a fair distance from the living parts of the house but.. an oust fan is a good idea.. maybe I'll get one for back there.

what you feed the cat can have some effect too..

Someone knocked up the wife so I've been cleaning two litter boxes (for two cats) for the last 9 months. After 4 months I bought an $80 Littermaid. I'm going to buy another next week. The damn cats (we have 3 now) still prefer the old fashioned box.

As for smell . . . 1) clean daily, 2) use quality litter, 3) add some baking soda

I have two large cats, and I have the large Littermaid automatic litter box thing. It works well for the most part, but only with the more expensive litter. The cheaper litter simply doesn't work, and even Tidy Cat gets messy at times. I don't notice any smell whatsoever until the little canister starts to get filled up.

When I used litterboxes I would simply spread a little of that Arm &amp; Hammer stuff in the litter; it works great. I stopped using litterboxes because my damn cats would always tear up the liners The unfortunate result is that the urine would often leak onto the sides, and onto the bottom. This was frustrating to clean up, and I don't have that problem with the Littermaid.

I never tried putting baking soda in there, I gotta give that a shot.

I've been using that Fresh Step scoopable stuff and I love it. I get lazy, though, and have a tendacy to not clean out the litterbox every day. One cat could care less, but the other was is pretty anal about it. She has found a nice little spot in the hallway to go if she sees a turd in 'her' litterbox. Bitch.

I have two kittens, that are approaching "cat" stage using one box.

Anyway, ideally each cat would have its own box, with a lid. I use the new crystal stuff which seems to work very well. No urine stench at all, and no clump/clay stench that you associate with cat litter. Now if the cat drops a deuce, there's not much you can do until it airs out.

Also, I scoop everday (except when I'm a slacker) and do a full change out every 2-3 weeks.

Lastly, use premium foods (Iams, Science Diet, etc....the expensive stuff, none of this meow-mix, friskies crap that makes fatty kitties). Basically the idea is that the food, being more nutritious, will be more digested/absorbed into the body = less stool that's less smelly.

Oh jesus! That's just inhumane! You're asking for kitty-sh!t on your pillow before long, which will be its way of saying: "Hey! I ain't got the height or opposable thumbs to clean this out. Help a brotha will ya?"

1. arm and hammer clumping litter, the kind that comes in the yellow box.

2. covered littler box.

3. clean it frequently, change it as the color darkens.

4. feed your cat dry food, keep treats to a minimum, or at the very least feed it consistent food. like i give my cat dry and then a little wet in the evening for a treat, but always the same brand. also high quality food is better because it has more protein and less "undigestable" stuff.

5. kittens will smell more, nothing you can do about it.

For urine, Feline Pine. There is nothing out there that beats it in the urine smell dept.
