Clean 2x or more a day. Change litter once a week or so.

Kitties like clean boxes anyways. Keeping it clean will cut down on "near misses".

Amen. My wife and I have 5 indoor cats and this is the way to go. The covered litter boxes help a tremendous amount too.

We tried one, hated it... and so did the cats. Cleaned it up (you haven't lived till you've cleaned dried cat sh1t from the times of the rake) & sold it on eBay after using it for ~4 months.

Now we use a covered box, scoop daily, change litter 1X/week.

Using quality litter does make a difference. We used the cheap clay crap for the first few days and then we got the good scoopable stuff. I think it was tidy cat but I'd have to check to make sure. There's virtually no smell now.
They also have the powder deodorizer which you can sprinkle on the litter. Daily scooping is a must.

A helpful tip I found out the hard way. Don't leave your shoes anywhere near the litter box. Your shoes will then become the secondary litter box for no apparent reason especially if they are leather. For some reason leather seems to be a cat magnet when it's time to let loose.

I have two litter boxes(covered style) for 3 cats. One is an indoor outdoor cat so she doesn't use it much. The other two are kittens. I clean the litter every 3-4 days. I change it probably once a month, if that.

One other solution is to go get one of those litter boxes with a door on it. That might help.

One thing i noticed is that we have a ltitter box upstairs in a bathroom and downstairs in a large open room. The large open room doesn't smell, but the bathrooom does. My guess is a large area helps disipate the smell and make it less concentrated. That might help.

Looking through more posts.

Scoopable litter. Scoop daily and use a covered litter box. Also, put it out of the way, like in a utility room or unused bedroom.

I never smell my kitty's litter box unless I forget to scoop it for a few days.

Keep the box clean, and that means dump old litter and wash the box on occasion. Don't use the world's cheapest litter. You get what you pay for, even if it is just litter. That doesn't mean go out and buy the most expensive stuff, just find one that works for you. The crystal stuff is garbage.

They also make a powder that you can sprinkle in the box that helps deodorize and make it smell better. You can usually find it next to the litter in stores.

Seems to work well for me. But I do think the case is that you can't just switch to it, because the cats won't like the feel of it under their paws right away. You'd need to do a gradual change by mixing scoopable stuff with it at first. It tracks around house much less than the scoopable stuff too, which is important, imo, when you live in a small apartment and don't like little litter granuals getting in your bed.
