i like two on my desk so that i can keep email/web sites up on one if i play a game on the other

i don't like to share, so in addition to two on my desk, my wife and two daughters (age 9 and 3) have their own PC's :D

then there are the 3 servers in the back

and there is usually 1 in some stage of build/test/wait to sell ;)

I think that I come closer to the situation you describe in your original question than most. I have three computers that exceed 1GHz in the CPU and have at least 40GB of hard drive. All are Athlon's: 1.1, 1.2, and 1.4.

The wife has the 1.2, and the kids have the 1.1. I seriously upgraded their computers last Christmas because we wanted to do some LAN gaming. It's a good excuse to build computers. Frankly, all three of the systems need a video card upgrade, and obviously could stand a CPU upgrade, but I can't afford it right now.

We have 8 computer systems in the house I think.

Mine with 19" FD Trinitron and Brother HL-1240 laser printer
Wife's with 17" Samsung 753DF monitor with HP v40 printer
Roommate's with 19" SUN (FD Trinitron) with HP laser
Sun Sparc 5 or something like that
2 iMac's
Mac Performa 630D
Mac Plus

Needless to say all the Macs are offline and gathering dust in the closet :(

I only have one monitor and one keyboard, but other than that, I have three complete machines. My main machine is a 1.33 GHz T-Bird. My second machine is a 650 MHz original Athlon that is almost fully up to date, except for current files and a some current updates on the OS. I keep it because it's a great backup if my main machine fails, and I still occasionally need to test one of my GFD's.

Then, there's my little putt-putt 486 DX6/100. It runs DOS 6.22 and Win 3.11 very well. It's great for setting up DOS based industrial control programs, including some that crash on faster machines, and, in a real pinch, it will also run my DOS based schematic and printed circuit layout program, as well as Office 95 for Win 3.x. It isn't worth enough money to sell, it's too slow to give away, even to newbie kids, and it doesn't take up that much space, so there's no point in trashing it. :)

My neighbor at school has 14 full computer setups that are almost as good as his main one. Over 4TB of space distributed amoung them all (never has to worry about backing up).

Anyways, it's because he's rich. Invited me over for a LAN party, and I said, bring or don't bring my computer, jokingly. He said, "Oh yeah, you haven't been over before." I was shocked! 14 computers, 14-21" monitors. I wish my dad was a defence lawyer!!!!!

Peace,
GermyBoy

I have 5 PCs in my house...

My mom, Dad, sister and I all have our own PCs... My sister also has another laptop which she uses for work...

I am thinking about getting a laptop myself... so it may be 6 PCs shortly... :)

I personally only have my main system, but I've been really tempted lately to build a Pentium IV system to go with it.

Don't get me wrong, I love my dualie system but it's not a very good gaming system.

I have 3 comps in my room: My Athlon 1.3, My Athlon 800 (occassionally OCed to 950) and a K6-233. First one is what I use most of the time; second one just crunches numbers for various DC projects and serves as a backup in case my main one fails, and the 233 is for playing old dos games.

5 total.

1 PDC //Fileserver (NT Server Enterprise) - Dual CPU
1 BDC //Fileserver//DHCP//Http/FTP - (Win2K Advanced Server) (8 SCSI HDD in a RAID5 Configuration)
1 Linux Router
1 Desktop W/S XP2000+ (WinXP, Win2K, Linux, Solaris)
1 Laptop (XP, Win2K, Win98)

now i want a dedicated gaming rig so that i can stick a GF4 or the new ATI R300 in....drools.

EDIT: these are all my machines, no one in my house uses them besides me. and probably
2nd EDIT: planned Win2k migration of the PDC this summer. there is just too much sensative information on that server to have go wrong.

I have two systems: "His" and "Hers" in separate offices, at opposite ends of the house. (Networked, of course.) See the "Rigs" link in my sig for specs.
