Sometimes the "special offers" are actually crazy coupons though - like $100 off a TV, 25% off certain cameras, $10 off video games, etc. I actually kind of want to purposefully get one with ads to get the coupons 😛

you forget, the geekasaraus likes to spend hours doing repetative monkey work that has been automated by others.

in this case they will spend hours surfing slickdeals or bens bargains for a deal instead of getting it delivered to their device

Yea I don't mind the special offers. It would be one thing if it were on the book itself when I'm reading, but on the screen saved and home screen? I'm ok with that.

Pre-ordered one.

Figure I can dig into the reviews and info between now and ship date and always cancel it if I decide by then it's not something I want.

I have a iPad 2 so really have no need for the thing, just another toy really.

I think the Kindle Fire is going to sell extremely well. At $200 thats, pretty hard to pass up. I also like how Amazon clears out their front page to showcase their device, not a lot of competitors do this on their homepage, except for Apple.

I foresee the death of the Nook and some competition for the iPad.

How are the ad versions? pretty annoying? Or worth saving 40~ bucks?

the keyboard version has the same battery life/screen...I almost just want that.

I'm quite excited about this. As a pure amazon device I probably wouldn't be too excited about this, but of CM8 gets ported to it then it will be a buy for sure. I'm also excited about the $79 e-ink Kindle. Will probably pick up one of those for my GF this Christmas.

I think I'll buy the $79 Kindle. Any recommendations on covers? They are pretty expensive (the amazon covers anyways).

Have one pre-ordered as a stop gap. Was really hoping the Playbook would have better Android support, but news is, nothing will work.

I think the "perfect" device for me will be a ~9" Tegra 3 with Bluetooth. A 10"+ is too large to type easily on. A 7" on the cheap may be about right until the Tegra 3s are out.

This. People who want an iPad will get an iPad. It won't bite into iPad sales.

Price is a big deal, though. My mom, for example, loves my brother's iPad - but can't imagine spending $500 on a toy. However, $200 is much more in her price range.

Having a device in the sub-$200 market that isn't a piece of crap is a huge difference maker.

#1 tablet activity: web browsing

#2 tablet activity: e-mail

Those are the top two uses for tablets by a large margin, regardless of whether the tablet is a $830 iPad 2 64GB 3G or a $99 HP Touchpad 16GB.

After that comes all the other things: movies, music, games, e-books, apps, etc.

The Kindle Fire (and the Silk Browser) address the core market and its core intended usage. It delivers a dual-core tablet for $100-$300 less than it's competitors, and it smartly replaces the standard Android 2.x interface with something that actually looks good on a tablet.

They are going to sell millions of these. B&N really has an uphill battle with the NC2; even if they match the Fire spec-for-spec, B&N can't match the back-end capabilities of Amazon (no cloud-accelerated browsing, no streaming video/music, etc.)

Other Android tablet manufacturers are taking it between the cheeks. First the $99 TouchPad and now the $199 Fire, talk about getting slapped around. I can't see how they'll compete at this rate. Apple has to be sitting back and laughing their asses off right now.

The TouchPad doesn't natively run Android... how do they fit into the Android tablet manufacturer group?

A big part of the ipad's draw (IMO) is the size. I would guess that something like the Acer Iconia or Asus Transformer would be a better comparison, and they aren't that much cheaper. I find the 7" tablets to be a bit smaller then I'd like for what I wanted to use it for. The Iconia fit the bill though.

Not that everybody wants that, but I'd say comparing the price or function of a 10" tablet to a 7" ebook/tablet isn't exactly a fair comparison.
