Anyone going to see the 2017 total solar eclipse?

Yeah, but you have to be in Casper Wyoming. So that's not a step most people would be willing to take.

I wish that were true. Denver is 4 hrs away from Casper. Its going to be super crazy busy. We are going to try to find a first come first serve campsite on Thursday night. If we don't, we will be out by black mountian on BLM land. reserved campsites are 100s per night and most require you are self contained. we just have a slide in for the pickup, so no bathroom.

I thought you said you were gonna be in Williams, OR. (maybe I mis-read something) Williams is in Josephine county, south of Grants Pass...not in the Bill Valley.,..

We're gonna be in the sprawling metropolis of Independence, Or. Right on the outskirts of Salem.
My buddy Tom lives outside of Williams. That's not in the path. We're going up to his female friend Tina's house for the eclipse.

The first one listed is in the Willamette Valley, OR. That's where I'll be! 😀

Was going to go to Malheur National Forest but the plan changed.

Tina lives in Scotts Mills, which is not in the Willamette Valley, my bad. Scotts Mills is in the "totality" path, though, n/w of Salem.

I live in the path of totality, so I thankfully don't have to travel for this one. The neighbors and I are throwing a block party that morning (since none of us has a chance in hell of getting to work), so it should be fun.🙂

You and about a quarter-million of your closest friends, judging from the predictions made so far. I'm looking forward to the eclipse; I can't say the same for the vast number of people who will be around. :anguished:

where are you buying your glasses?
seems like a lot of fakes on amazon according to news outlet. sadly, they dont mention where to buy legit glasses
Buy them locally. Brick & mortar stores will have set up orders long ago with legitimate suppliers, as opposed to the absurd flea market that is Amazon.

A friend of my grandparents has 1500 acres in central Oregon around madras and he did the same thing with that land, setting it up for camp spots for that weekend, and pre sold all the spots already, netting him about $1.2 million.
I'd be very curious how much all of that is costing you. Obviously your pal is going to make a tidy profit no matter what. But I'm interested how much all of the sanitation services, utilities, etc are going to cost them. Especially since local providers are going to be struggling to keep up.

Yeah, I'm sure everywhere along the line will be a zoo. We still may just stay home. Where we live should get 93%...not sure it's really worth the costs and trouble to get that "extra 7%," but this is a pretty rare event...so, I think we'll drive down. We got "Explore One Sun Catcher" glasses at the local Fred Meyer store for $2/pair. They're on the list of "safe" disposable eclipse glasses.

I'm told that 7% would be the difference between it getting slightly dimmer and pitch black. Combined with the fact that you won't be able to see the corona, and you'd miss most of the experience.

Yeah...I've seen a few partial eclipses...and a couple near total...but no total eclipses.

Well the eclipse is tomorrow, 40 miles North of here. Today is full overcast, first time in months, couldn't see the sun when I went outside. Tomorrow is forecast to be partly cloudy. Lots of people might be very disappointed tomorrow. I hope not.

Uhh, the eclipse isn't for two weeks...

Been there, done that March, 7 1970 😎
I'll watch the partial eclipse from New Hampster, if it's sunny.

Tom's coming harvest. 😎

Annnnd . . . his dog Sophie.

Another pic of the house/cabin he built on his property. He also built a workshop. He's got a huge garden (besides his "harvest.") He generates his own electricity through solar panels and a pelton wheel, fed by his stream and all backed-up by a gas generator, and really big storage batteries.

He just got a smartphone, given to him by the Doctor who owns these hot springs in Ashland where Tom has built a lot of the structures.

I have a ton of physical pics he sent by snail mail so, if and when I get motivated, I'll post more. They're . . . kewl. 😎

It would actually be a bigger effort to not be here when it happens so guess I will be around. Schools and traffic will screw everything up that day so I'm staying home.
