Anyone going to see the 2017 total solar eclipse?

This explains why it is easy to damage your eye when watching a total solar eclipse, and why you should either be sure to time it very carefully (and allow for a good margin of error), or just view the thing through one of those sets of cheap "dark" glasses they sell for the express purpose of looking at the sun without getting hurt.

ok. this makes sense now. thanks!
i will probably be looking at the phone's screen while recording the event anyway. :-D

Wasn't planning on it, but I will actually be in McMinnville Oregon for other reasons during the eclipse which looks to be in the band of the total eclipse.

I'll be in Oregon to visit Tom, my friend for nearly 40 years now, and we plan to go up to his friend Tina's place, right smack in the middle of the band. We went to our first Rainbow Gathering together, back in the day. He's battling prostrate cancer that has now "escaped the container," which ain't good.

I have a bunch of pics of the house and workshop he built on his 30 acres near Williams. His workmanship is as beautiful as his soul. If I get motivated, I'll share some of them here.

Maybe you could slip down to S.C. I'm sure I can explain you away to my wife.

Best of to Tom. The older ailments get your attention.

Tell her I'm a very generous lover with an extremely low sperm count. That should put her mind at ease. 😉 😛
I think I'll just show her the rabid elf pic.

You got an address for body parts or should we just toss 'em on the grill?

Think you can switch to a corn diet? Might be able to use some parts.

So would this affect hotel rates in the path of totality for the entire month of August?

Just wondering when the market will return to normal - pricewise.

Southern Illinois is where we first looked but hotels were pretty filled up and at gouge rates.
Woman & I are gonna hit western suburbs of St Louis, plenty of hotels available for under $100 a night. About 6ish hours drive for us. We'll go and spend Sat and Sun hitting up bars and restaurants in St Louis, then watch the eclipse on Monday, and then head home on Tuesday.

I'll go out my front door into my front yard and turn around. Should be able to see it for its 1:50 of total eclipse that's supposed to be visible here. (NE GA--Lake Hartwell.)

where are you buying your glasses?
seems like a lot of fakes on amazon according to news outlet. sadly, they dont mention where to buy legit glasses

My wife works in optical and their store is giving away glasses to people who spend a certain amount of money on stuff there. But she can get some for us for free.

i have a solar filter for a 4.5 in telescope. should get a good look at the corona and the jagged edge of the moon moving across the sun. we will be camping somewhere in wyoming on blm land from friday to monday.

Lucky that I can just wake up before noon. Watch it and then fight traffic
to work. All Hotels here are raping people and sold out too.

The first one listed is in the Willamette Valley, OR. That's where I'll be! 😀

Was going to go to Malheur National Forest but the plan changed.

I thought you said you were gonna be in Williams, OR. (maybe I mis-read something) Williams is in Josephine county, south of Grants Pass...not in the Bill Valley.,..

We're gonna be in the sprawling metropolis of Independence, Or. Right on the outskirts of Salem.
