Anyone from Milwaukee?

A student organization of which I am President will be traveling to Milwaukee next Thursday through Saturday for a conference. We're staying at the Ramada City Centre.

Anyone know of any places around there that would be friendly to a group of eleven college students and one old guy so that we could eat some decent (preferably relatively inexpensive) food while we BS about the conference? We could always do something like Applebee's, but I figured there would have to be something local (and better) around that area.

I realize that twelve isn't THAT big of a group and we could likely just go anywhere, but I'd still like some recommendations.

One idea we found was Joey Buono's. Any other ideas?
 
the water street brewery is good, so is rock bottom. You should look at going to the safehouse too, great food and an interesting entrance. the entrance is in a ally just across from the Pabst theater downtown. just walk down the ally a bit and you will find it.

I'm not very fond of there anymore, I don't think the college kids would like it. Calderone club right next to it is pretty good though.

What changed at King & I of late?

I had a bad experience at Calderone Club, but it was a Bucks game night, so YMMV.

It just got old, last few times I went there it was empty and the floor was filthy. Both times were at lunch with coworkers, never been there for dinner.

I suppose that would help. Nothing too exotic. American, Bar/Grill, Pizza, or something of that nature would be awesome. We looked through Google Maps for the area and saw a lot of high-dollar, uber-nice restaurants, but didn't see much that would be too college (or wallet) friendly, hence me asking here....

For American, I'll agree with a burger from Kopps. Pizza all seems to taste about the same. (Or maybe it was just me)

Try ee-sane next to Pizza Shuttle, I prefer them over The King and I. Also if you can finished the 36 oz steak, salad and potatoe at primequarter you get a medal and the next dinner free.

I'd agree with pizza shuttle and kopps. Both good choices.


Is Botana's new? I've never heard of it but have been to La Perla and La Fuentes just up the street plenty of times.


Oakland Gyros is great for gyros. It's a little further north by UW-Milwaukee.


Buffalo Wild Wings isn't bad either.

Side note: Pizza Shuttle and Oakland Gyros are open after bar close if you're looking for food at that time.

 
If you want wings I would try mcgillicutty's next to buffalo wild wings on water street, get the blue cheese with them, even if you dont like blue cheese give theirs a try. Soo good.
 
La Perla is good if you want Mexican.
If you want to go Italian, Bucca di Beppo is a lot of fun with a group of people. It's family-style, so you order a few entrees and share them.

I;ve been going there for eons now. It used to just be that small area by the bar. Nothing more. It's insane now (and WAY more $$$) too. Still is fun to take the kids now though. Isn't like the old days, but the food is still the same. Ugh... great now I'm starving.
 
Coquette Cafe has some damn good French food.

Calderone Club is decent Italian food. My buddy's family is friends with the owner since they're all off-the-boat Sicilian. Makes for good treatment when I visit.

Good call. A bit more $$ and "upscale" but the food is very good. Casual/cafe French dining. There's lots of places down there in the 3rd ward.

OP generally speaking I'd suggest going to these areas:

3rd ward: hipper and trendier places (as mentioned above). Lots of little shops and bars too.
Water Street: equivalent of college and "jock" pubs/grills I guess. Good food, just not my general crowd. But certainly if thats your type, waterstreet is the place to be.
"La Barrio": Down on 5th and National area. TONS of good Mexican places (generally authentic), several standard bars and grills.
Downtown: On Broadway, just north of Wisconsin there are several very good restaurants/bars. This is more the yuppie strip. Sushi, steaks, Cuban, "nice" pubs/grills.
The East Side: TONS of cheaper locations to eat. This is where the afformentioned Pizza Man and Zaffarios are all located. Littel further from your hotel, but this is the college/hipster part of town. Lots of good places... you can't really go wrong.

Those are the 5 general areas within your reach staying downtown. It just depends on what you want and what kind of personality you guys have really.
