I have to admit the irrational side of me wants an i860 system now. Even though my old Conney at 3.2 is doing fine. I've just got the itch.

I'd love to upgrade my HTPC to i3 with that really power efficient MSI board too.

Been thinking about it a lot lately... must resist.

Last time I went "WOW" after upgrading CPU was when I got my first E6600.
Last time I went "WOW" after upgrading GPU was when I got my first 8800 GTX.

Strange that I've settled with a 955 BE and an HD 5870. But right now I am quite content with what I've got.

I went P4 3.0GHz-->E2180-->E7200-->i5-750. The upgrade to E2180 was the most noticeable one, Vista was slow on a single-core P4. The other upgrades weren't as huge, but I like to stay current with CPUs.

The GPU I don't change that often. I think it went something like: Riva TNT-->Geforce 2 GTS-->Radeon 9700 Pro-->Radeon HD3870. I keep them for 3-5 years, so I go WOW every time I upgrade those. :D

Heh, I want one of those too. Honestly though I'll likely wait for an reasonably priced board with USB3 and SATA6 since an HTPC will likely last longer than most destops. Also, I have a DISH contract with DVR already so it is more something I would do for fun. :p

I feel no need to upgrade. Any new games I'm tried have been awesome on my lowly Pentium Dual Core. I really didn't need the 5850 either, my old GTS250 was enough to be honest. . . the only real difference is I can max out the AA on everything now too.

I have a little 30GB OCZ Vertex as my boot drive and it makes everything feel rocket powered. One day I might want a quad core, but for gaming it's not an essential yet.

It's actually a pain. . . I _like_ upgrading. . . but I can't justify it any more :p

Previous : Gigabyte 965P-DS3 Rev 1.0, E6600 @ 3.6GHz, 4GB DDR2-800
Current : Gigabyte EX58-UD3R Rev 1.6, i7 920 @ 4.1GHz, 6GB DDR3-1600
Carried Over : 4890, X-Fi, WD 640GB Blue, AD-7240S

Needed a CPU/mobo/RAM combo for my new file server / HTPC. The E6600 fit the bill nicely.

Boy what will nvidia say. lol Then I would go for the upgrade, until then Im fine for the next 20 years. My DAW pownz and Im happy. System was born 11/21/07

I've got a PhII 955 + 4870, so there's no pressing need to upgrade the core components anytime soon. (That doesn't mean I won't if I can get them for a song, I'm just not throwing money at it.)

Yeah, I'm sure things could be even more fluid with the extra horsepower available from the newer parts, but some of this (newer parts) is getting out of hand.

We're rapidly getting to the point where we're going to need KW rated PSU's to power these Systems anymore (especially the Graphics cards) - and the heat levels just make me uncomfortable even if it is "safe" .

The rig in my sig barely uses over 400 watts. The only people who need KW psu are running 3 video cards and water cooling and tons of hard drives and god knows what else. You could get a decent 500W psu and run every single gpu video card out there.

yeah I doubt your pc even pulls 400 watts at the wall. I only hit about 230-240 watts while gaming and my old 65nm gt260 probably uses about the same power as your 5850. now your cpu probably uses at least 30-40 watts more but overall I would think you are actually only around 300 watts during gaming.

Core i7 + 8800gt and I feel no need to upgrade. Games are all console ports these days and an 8800gt is much better than what's in any console. I can still run pretty much anything at max settings at 16x10.

I really didn't "have to" upgrade my computers (especially the secondary), but did anyway thanks to awesome deals at nearby fry's /MC. It's just fun playing around with new gear :)

That's one of the reasons I picked up the 9600GT. It was a very low power (wattage wise) card for the performance.

Look at this (yes, these are System loads):

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3679&p=16

Compare where the 8800GT is in comparison to the newer cards (not multi-card) - that's some serious power requirement creep in just a couple years.
The upper end parts are + & - the 500W mark, and the "midrange" cards are nearly 100W more than the 8800GT.

My old 7800GTX pulled 285W, and I needed a 350W-400W PSU for that System.

That's not a good trend.

My pc is in my sig. No reason to really upgrade as it runs all my games easily.

My DVD drive is dying though, so I will probably get a blu-ray to replace it. For an extra 30 dollars why not.

I went Socket 939 --> i7, and 3870 -->4890 all in one upgrade. It was a pretty big difference then SSD. Won't touch my main components for a while and will look at a videocard upgrade maybe in a year depending on whats out and if I notice any slow downs.

I prefer to do bigger upgrades spaced out you feel the performance increase more. Also that feeling of money well spent is there.

I cannot wait for a new GPU and motherboards with real high memory support with 1TB or more.

Bigger SAS SSDs would be nice too.

So yeah computers feel pretty stagnant to me! Where's my 10GHz?
2.4GHz x 6 ≠ 14.4 GHz!

I upgrade for gaming purposes and the new architectures have not offered a compelling reason to switch from my overclocked e8400.

I'll get a GTX480 because I'm weary of SLI and sit back and see how Bulldozer and SandyBridge play out. I really thought I would go with the 32nm Nehalem but this Core 2 has been stellar.

I am in the same boat. I typically upgrade every 3 years, and my last upgrade was in 2008 (system in signature). At this stage, I am not playing very many PC games any more and I am not sure I see any on the horizon that I'd like to have. So, I think I will extend the life of this box out to 4 or 5 years with maybe a graphics card refresh in the next 18 months if a game comes along that would require it.

The geek and hobbyist in me would love building a new PC every year, but the practical guy in me can't justify it when I have other things to spend the money on (home remodeling, vacations, etc).

CPU: Pentium 2 233mhz MMX + 32mb of RAM --> Athlon XP1600+ & 256MB of RAM (woohoo! I remember ICQ took 2 minutes and 45 seconds to load on P2 and about 10 seconds on the XP1600+. I used to make a coffee downstairs and go back upstairs and ICQ was still loading :))
GPU: Savage 4MB --> Radeon 8500 64mb

I just bought a new video card for my E8400 @ 3.6 and I'm probably not going to upgrade for a little while-basically until 32nm quad-cores have affordable prices. At which time the plan would be that I could just buy another identical video card and double up on the video power at the same time as the boost in CPU power. Right now the video card isn't really fast enough that the CPU would be limiting it much and vice versa.
Do admit that I am quite tempted by something like a 920 but the overall cost just keeps going up too high since you basically need to get a new CPU, a new motherboard, as well as new RAM.

I'll be skipping this generation. You can see my main system in my sig...

I simply dont neeed anythign better than a C2D @ 4.00, 4GB RAM and a HD4890. Plays all the games i'm playing atm (i dont' have as much time for this as i used to) and gaming is the most intensive task i use my PC for.

I wont be spending any more money on upgrading this rig, s775 has had a good lifespan but is dead now. If i was to pop in a quad it'd be a marginal improvement over my 4ghz dual and a sidestep for any apps that are not multi threaded.

I imagine my next system will be a scratch build some time in 2011, when there is a nice selection of quads, hexcore+ from both AMD and Intel. Also tech like USB3.0, faster sata and (possibly) PCI 3.0 should be established by then. I'll take my pic of the best bang for buck system.

I've already got an Athlon II X4 630 @ 3.5Ghz and a Phenom II X4 940 @ 3.5Ghz, both on AM2+ boards. I don't need to upgrade any time soon, but my 940 won't go past 3.5 without pushing 1.5V for 3.6Ghz. I'm tempted to get a C3 955, but the BIOS support on both of my boards ended before C3 was released so I'm not sure if the C3 processors will work properly or not.
