I have a C2D E8500 and a 7900GTO and I'm not upgrading because none of my applications need any of the extra power that new systems have (probably don't even need the power of my E8500 but whatever) and I play old PC games. I usually pick new games up on my PS3 or 360 when I want them.

I did however recently upgrade from motherboard audio to an ASUS Xonar Essence STX card because my headphone jack on my motherboard was hating my headphones, and of course, to improve sound quality like 1000%, but I don't count that as a "normal" upgrade because it's not a new CPU/GPU.

Last summer I had an Athlon64 X2 6400+ paired with an 8800 GTX. Had both for quite some time and they were doing their job well on a 22 inch monitor. The CPU and mobo suffered a short (water damage), so I was forced to build a new one. Otherwise, I would have kept it for another year. It was fine for Fallout 3, Oblivion, LotRO, etc...

lol it's funny cause i work full time on my comp and it becomes an efficiency issue to upgrade, exact opposite here, went from a 3700+ and immediately had to upgrade when i saw a opty 165.these two were hella fun to oc anyway.

then when the c2d conroes came out i had no choice either, went from a e6600 (?) to q6600 and realized i messed up, went back to the dual core and upgraded to a e8400. everytime i see the bill from the parts i bleed hard-earned cash, but if it makes my work 15minutes faster a day, then it's worth it and i do NEED that.

What do you do for living ?

I'm still running my 939 unit. Recently put in an X2 cpu and upgraded to a 4850 ati gpu. I'm happy with what it does so far, so no need to upgrade.

Sorry if you've mentioned it, but what are you upgrading to the Fermi's from? You generally seem to be ahead of the curve on new parts, just curious if you have some insight, what preparations you'll be making, and what you're looking at gaining. If this is too off topic, just ignore it :p.

Finally decided to skip Westmere for both laptop and desktop. Instead, I will just o/c my Pentium E5300 to 4ghz and run it down until Sandy Bridge is ready for desktops. I will likewise run down my laptop until Sandy Bridge is ready for laptops. Also going to skip the Radeon 5 series and GF100 series until 28nm is shipping with new GPUs.

I will probably buy a 40gb boot SSD for both laptop and desktop in the meantime, which I can carry over in the future and which will probably make more sense as an upgrade. Might also buy a more efficient power supply and cooling products.

this is a closeup of 1 card.. :p

I am on quadfire..

The only upgrades i see for my system is:

1. SSD's ... however they dont taste yummy enough yet for me to move.
2. Fermi or 5970's.

If fermi cant beat a 5970 then i will be once again on quadfire with godfinity setup. :p

I am and always will be a hardcore gamer.
Max Settings @ 60fps+ @ high resolution only please.

I'm kind of in the same boat. Bored with my current setup and looking to tinker with something new. I was thinking about building a little external watercooler and putting my 5870 on water, but I also don't have a whole lot of time to mess around either. I'm always curious to see where others are heading, thanks :).

Oh, and I realize this side discussion goes against everything this thread stands for, so I'll stop now :p.

As per my signature, all the games I play and everything else I do runs just fine yet. I may skip a year and wait 'til next year.

Upgrade paths:

AMD 3xxx+ > Core Duo 1.8 (MBP) > E8400
6800GT > Mobility X1600 (a pretty substantial downgrade) > 8800GTS 512MB (a massive upgrade)
And I got a SSD recently.

Strangely I don't find the need to upgrade anything right now, and the only new thing in two years was that SSD. I considered a 4890 when it was cheap, but no need. Could maybe use more storage space, or an e-IPS monitor, or something, but nothing in the way of performance.

Oh, BTW this is a small form factor system. It's seen its share of abuse as an airplane carry-on, but everything is still intact. That's why I opted for the E8400 over Q6600, and no SLI/crossfire.

Frankly I'm amazed by the longevity of Nvidia's 8 series. The 8800GTX is still a decent card for single monitor gameplay almost 3 and a half years later. Does that speak to the horsepower of the card, or the graphic compromises that today's games make? Maybe both.

I honestly just don't see a reason to upgrade anytime soon.

Current system does what I need it to do.

For all of you that are hanging on to their existing systems, and not upgrading to i5/i7/AII/PhII, here's your thread.

Tell us why you're not upgrading. Don't be shy.

I plan on skipping the entire 1156/1366 generations. I still have the parts to build one more Q6600, and two Q9550 rigs, all on X48 DDR2 boards. Probably keep them all at 4GB of RAM, though, because RAM prices shot way back up.
Currently, my two main machines are still rocking E2140s, not sure if I want to change them, they run so well.

I'm starting to get a lot more power-concious, in my old age. I used to think that maximum overclock was all that mattered (Q6600 @ 3.6 baby!), but now I realize that paying an exorbitant electric bill, purely for bragging rights, is pointless.

I'm not upgrading because primarily I lost interest in overclocking.
I started with Celeron in 2002 then AMD 130nm, 90nm single cores, AMD 4800, Intel Q6600 GO, AMD Phenom X4 (9950?) and Callisto 550 (unlocked as a Phenom II quad)
The most exciting was that Q6600 paired with 2 gig of Crucial Tracer ram and the most pleasant and least expensive was the Callisto with 4 gig of OCZ ram. All of my machines (except that Celeron) have had more power than my home use requirements.

i have a E6600 in one PC and a Q6600 in another. for me, i won't upgrade because:

1 - 1st time i can remember where the systems are good enough
2 - RAM has now moved on to DDR3 which is still more expensive than DDR2

if the whole fusion thing takes off, then i hope to be able to just drop in a better GPU and offload what i can to that since i assume the on chip GPU/APU will use open CL.

oh, the only other thing i want is more storage and eventually a SSD

I have a Q6700, stock speed, with 6GB of ram running Windows 7 64bit. The only feasible upgrade I see myself doing is either video (but I happy with my 8800GT) or better yet, SSD for my OS drive in a couple of years. Its not as if I really tax/utilize the quad core in there now. This will be my desktop for years down the road.

My AMD Athlon II X2 240 and Powercolor Radeon 4770 is performing well (also very quiet and runs cool) and I have not run into any games which I can't play smoothly. Have pre-ordered Supreme Commander 2 so if it can't play that smooth then an upgrade might be on the cards.

In a funny twist if fate I was offered $250 for my Opteron 185 today. It looks like I'll be building a new machine after all.

I was offered a lot for my Socket 939 Asrock 939 Dual Sata2, 2gb PC3200 Memory and Opteron 182 2.4ghz Denmark. Got enough by selling it on Ebay to get a Foxconn motherboard, Athlon II X2 240 and Powercolor Radeon 4770 so I am well pleased :)

I realized that i dont need the fastest or best cpu and or gpu. PC is gaming is mostly dead due to antipiracy schemes and majorty of games are ported to consoles, been downgrading since i got the xbox 360 last year.

keeping dual core E5200 as main rig since iCore is cost prohibitive and just built a AMD htpc.

Thats pretty close to how I feel re upgrading, although power saving is not an issue for me at all. e8400, GTX 275, 4gb ram, P35 mobo I think will keep me satisfied for quite a while. If I do upgrade, it will only be out of boredom and to play around with new components, NOT because I need them. I still game quite a bit, but I can happily do without everything maxed out in Crysis or similarly demanding games.

I work a job with my comp, there's really no excuse for why it doesn't already have 2 SSDs in there other than being cheap lol, the 5600 isn't bad i think the 8800gt will still run everything for awhile if you turn shadows off, depends on what you use the comp for i guess.

i just went to newegg and looked at my receipt and it was from 16months ago, i think the cpu clock bottleneck is contributing to this weird feeling of "it's time to upgrade, but there's nothing much faster to upgrade to"

the 8800GT is still very good. Shadows off... LoL! it just doesn't like AA in some games. But like i said, im still paying new games maxed out at 2048x1152.

The 8800GT is hands down the best piece of hardware i have ever bought.
