Years ago I would have, but I've been indoctrinated into the world of RWD sedans. The driving experience is just better. And I still don't think this car will be reliable or free of maddening and expensive repairs. I'm still annoyed at being forced to pay $500 for a window motor in my 2003 golf years ago.

Chances are it will not be stick shift and it will be well over $35k

no thanks

(and I'm a VW fan too)

Why wouldn't it be? The current Golf R is manual only and they've all but confirmed the next one will be as well..

That being said, I'm a VW guy and I couldn't care less

Yes, but depends on the timing. The current Golf R was on a very short list when I made my last purchase. The reason it fell off? No memory seats. My wife is about a foot shorter than me and our seating positions are vastly different. After the first three (four?) cars we owned had manual seats, we swore we would only buy memory seats. Ended up buying a BMW 335i coupe.

When we drove the R we had a blast, comparing it back to back to the GTI. For us it was only the R. My oldest child is only a couple years from driving, so I am already convincing my wife that we could get one. Not for a 16 year old driver, but I could get me a new toy and have a hand-me-down. A few years old Golf R for college is what every kid wants, right? 🙂

this car is based on a tuned EA888. google "EA888 oil burning" . its notorious for that and VW will just dick everyone around with it being "normal" to burn like 8 quarts a year.

that said, even if it didnt have that issue this car costs too much. i mean probably $35k for a FWD haldex car. you have to be a crazy VW fan to buy a golf R because the premium is just so much over a GTI. friend had an 05 R32 and he was a super VW fan, but even that was $30k when it came out and seemed grossly overpriced. fun car just too expensive for basically a tuned GTI. you don't even get a really exclusive engine like the R32 had.

i think the only way this registers as a value to most is if you think of it as like a sleeper TT-S hatchback. maybe slightly exciting if it was say $7k cheaper

Nice parent. I got a 10 year old Accord. But it was a great car (5-speed) and I loved it.

It's the only way I can justify owning the number of cars I want. Two drivers = two cars (most of the time), but numbers can be "adjusted." Buying a third soon, but a truck. I might use it once in a while. But I have my eyes on a slightly faster car right now...50th Anniversary Porsche 911. Now if only that dream bonus would come in....

VW has a tendency to f*ck up US models, so I'll wait and see what we actually get.

MKV - 2 door only and DSG only, Pissed off the 4 door people and the manual only people.
MKVI - Manual only, pissed off the DSG people and 2.0T pissed off the VR6 people.

In Europe you can configure an R however you want.

35K doesn't scare me. I just configured a normal GTI to how my 2008 is and it was just over 30K. They also hold their value really well compared to a regular GTI. Timing could be right as my GTI will be 7 by the time the new R comes out.

No way. Performance is just not there for the money (that goes double for the Focus ST). You can get a CPO 335i in mint shape and have a 6MT RWD monster for similar money, and it's a better car in every conceivable way if you're already prepared for Euro maintenance.

Is that the same as the '07 Passat? I know a guy who lemon-lawed his for oil burning issues. I complain about our WRX eating a quart between changes but 8 quarts a year is ridiculous.

Too close to Audi territory. Esp. the new A3/S3.

For the US : The new 2014 A3 is a sedan. There is no hatch. The 2015 A3 hatch is a diesel hybrid, and probably going to be very expensive. I haven't read of any other models that will be offered. And the S3 is priced in a different league. Audi is kind of out of the picture for the next year or two.

Anyway, about the Golf R, if you look up 2012 used, they're $28K listed, which isn't too bad. The Focus ST is still less, but nothing is going to touch that in terms of value.

I love hatches in general. Jack of all trades and master of none. You can distinguish them from a mile away. And each have their own "personality". So yes, I am excited for the new Golf R. 🙂

Problem with VW, the Golf especially, is they've always been over priced for what they are. When you consider that the Focus ST, Fiesta ST, Civic Si, and the Subaru BRZ are all cheaper with similar specs, the GTI line is not as competitive as it once was. I'm more interested in the GTD as they've finally made a sporty diesel hot hatch for the North American market.

Most of the cars in this list are not direct competitors of the Golf R (or GTI), except for our money in general. There is just something about the hatchback shape for some people, myself included. Although I would give the BRZ some serious consideration if they would put a larger engine in it. I still have too much "need V8 sound and torque" in me to go with the small engine cars, even though I like them a lot.

I am also very interested in the GTD. My biggest problem is patience. I will have changed cars twice before either the R of the GTD arrive. And I wonder whether I will be able to go back to them at that time.
