Of course I might be biased because whereas I'm relatively eloquent and a decent problem solver, my shitty memory/attention span and impulsiveness prevents me from perceiving myself as exceptional and this makes me sad :(.

Most of us tend to focus on our strengths. Perfectly natural.

lol, manowar821 and MoonBeam should get a room together, both think they so smart that we cannot understand their thoughts and therefore interpret them as idiocy.

Also, as for your description of yourself monowar821, that describes hundreds of people on this very forum, TBH that describes about half the engineering students I have known in my life, that doesn't make you a super genius, it makes you a smart guy who is also lazy. Also FWIW you very accurate described Asberger's syndrome also known as "high functioning autism", maybe you should look it up and see if you have the other symptoms (if it will make you happy many "genius" type people also had this disorder).

Apparently manowar is one of the top 30 people on earth in IQ.

He must be the founder of Giga Society then.

:p

But seriously, no way he has a 186 IQ, but what do you expect out of ATOT, where most people have 6 figure incomes, are in olympic athlete shape, and date supermodel girlfriends.

You don't have to believe me, sometimes even I have a hard time believing it... :p

186 is in the top 30 in the world, though? Jesus, I thought it was more like 30000 when I first learned about it.

Most people don't get tested, though. It could be much higher.

Well, you, and now my girlfriend are both telling me I'm wrong. Apparently a lot of schools have manditory testing of IQs, I was wrong.

I never got tested for IQ. Anyways, what type of test did you take to derive your IQ? What's the length of the test?

Well they certainly can't tell all those kids, "Your IQ is 100, you have average intelligence." Think of their precious self esteem! They're all the best and brightest students ever tested!

I had an IQ test sometime in elementary school, for placement in the gifted program. 130-135 is the limit for that, I my information is correct.
I was never told what my results were, and I don't know how I'd find out.

I do remember that I thought Chile was in Asia, mainly because I'd only heard of it once before. I never was too concerned with political boundaries. My favorite maps were relief maps. The country and state borders were always just in the way of what I was interested in.

i was offered a brochure to join mensa after i got my iq test. didn't join... good call, i think.

just did the mensa workout:

Your score was 29 out of 30. That is an excellent score, you would have a very strong chance of passing the Mensa test and joining Mensa.

i missed the question where i had to count the 7s from 1-100. i counted 11.

Which is more likely:
His IQ really is 186

OR

He read his IQ upside down while it was sitting in front of the test administrator:
It's really 98.1

ya, in 3rd and 4th they tested a group of kids at my school too. i was tested, and offered a spot in a program in 5th grade on. it sounded fun to me, but my mom said she didnt want me singled out or pushed too far ahead. she didnt like the idea of pushing kids to "grow up before they are ready". i really never thought of it at the time, i was just bummed i couldnt take a bus to another school for 5 hours a day. i never even considered trying to find out the results, as im sure it would be totally different at this stage in life. IQ doesnt mean much to me. if mine is low, bummer. ive learned quite a bit so far in life, i know ill learn more, i love reading and trying to figure stuffz out. i also got a "mensa puzzle book" one year as a present from a relative. the puzzles are meant to "exercise your brain", and are pretty amusing. some are hard, some not. plenty of games to keep ya busy.

The dumbest person I ever came across was a member.
I think they pay money to join, get a free toaster, and a little card saying "I'M SPECIAL".

More of a club for very arrogant people than smart people.

Not to keep bashing on manowar821 over his "186" IQ, but the standard tests that I have seen didn't even claim to be able to measure up that high, I'm pretty sure you have to go to another place to have a special test done suited for high achieving people. I know alot of people are bashing you and such, but what you are claiming here would be the equivalent of saying you are have won an NFL MVP or won a Nobel prize or something, unless you have really really solid proof nobody is gonna believe you even in real life, and over the interwebs you don't have the first chance in hell of being believed. Basically it would probably be best if you just admitted that you heard the tester wrong or that they filled out the form wrong or something. Statistically speaking you are claiming to be one of the 40 smartest people in the entire world, or one of the two smartest people in the entire USA.

IQ scores are normally distributed with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. [Graph] Statistically, the latter is more likely.

But, everything on the internet is true. So the former must be true.

If the poster really has an IQ of 186, he would almost be a savant and must have got some media coverage. He can easily post said media coverage as proof.

What special mental abilities do you have? Telekinesis, telepathy? Perhaps you can be invited to a different society.

 Sorry, I was tired when I wrote that. There is a HUGE difference between the cognitive functions of an average IQ (or just a bit higher/lower) and those of someone 4 or 5 sd's above average. A group of people with IQ's of 180 are going to interact differently than a group with 130s. That's what I was driving at.

I was offered a membership. My IQ is 186. No I'm not lying.

I'm really not interested, though.

Statistically, that would make you one of the three most intelligent people in the US. I believe PrinceofWands has claimed to have an equally high IQ, and of course Marilyn vos Savant would round out the top 3. How privileged we are here at Anandtech to have two of the three most intelligent people in the US posting on this forum. ;) Don't be offended if people don't believe you, but I can't say I've ever noticed a high level of intelligence behind your posts.

You can be anything on the Internet, you know. I'm Lance Armstrong. Want to see my moon rocks? ;)

Nope, never claimed that. I've said I was 99.9999th percentile, which is correct (and no where near 186). However that leaves 6000 people worldwide with higher IQ's than me.

Also need to realize that it fluctuates. Most people will score within a range depending on numerous factors. So while my highest test puts me at the level I just mentioned, I've also tested 15 points lower at other times and on other tests. What I'm driving at is that someone could conceivably score a 186 (because of a poor proctor, strength in a particular area focused on by that test, random congruence of knowledge/skills, etc) but have a functional IQ significantly lower (say as much as 20 points).

Correct. The two most common initial tests are the Stanford Binet (which is a 16SD scale based on comparison of chronological age to knowledge/ability) and the Wechsler (which is a 15SD scale based on specific cognitive and psychological development functions). The SB has been losing favor since the 70's and is now hardly used. Anyway, if you test 4SD's above average (about a 160IQ) then those tests lose their accuracy and any psychologist worth his/her salt will refer you on to a specialist for further testing to pinpoint not only your g (general intellect, that which we refer to as IQ), but establish your areas of strength.

Those tests are truly exhaustive. You'll spend anywhere from 6-8 hours up to 3 days going through it all. It will consist of various written tests (like the mega or the titan (both now obsolete btw)), skills portions, interviews, eeg (or other modern scans), observation of activities, and other things.
