I caught a pufferfish off the Florida coast. I pulled it up and the guy in the boat was like wtf. He took the puffer fish and squeezed it but it didn't let go of all the water inside. He then threw the fish on the ground hard, and it still was a fat ball. Then we tossed it back into the water..

the ones at the store are just like that, green-spotted puffers. they're awesome!

DLeRium, didn't the spines hurt the boat guy when he grabbed the fish?

That doesn't prove anything, it just upgrades the lie to a conspiracy. :)

We bought 2 of them from wallyworld because as you know they look cool as hell BUT we found out they are very aggressive! They attacked our 2 gold fish that were over 4 inches long and these suckers were only an inch. I say get them because they are cool to watch but dont keep them with any other fish or you wont have any left in the take but them later :D

You must be part of this conspiracy that shilala speaks of. ;)

Seriously though, I think the little puffer is pretty cool. I thought of getting it but the gf didn't like it too much.

some fish live near the mouth of rivers and can move between salt and fresh water

they are often termed "brackish water" fish

They chased each other around but never did to themselves what the did to my 2 goldfish. They pulled off scales and ruined thier fins. I had to buy a small tank to put them in so they wouldnt only kill my goldfish but stress them out either.

Oh man, that's cool, I might have to setup a freshwater tank again. We've had many freshwater setups but they get boring, salt water won't work because our vacations are many times about 4 weeks and we don't want someone else coming in our house on a regular basis to maintain it.

If you want puffers in a community, get one of the dwarf species (Carinotetraodon), they stay under 2". They are however, somewhat delicate and cannot be kept with boisterous tankmates.

All the larger FW puffers are aggressive, to other fish and to each other. Species tanks are best.

@ Shilala: you are partially right... most of the FW puffers in the trade are brackish water fish. I have however collected some several hundred miles from the nearest ocean :)

Awesome.
I didn't think puffers even did brackish water. There's not a whole lot I don't know about fish, I'm pretty well studied that way. I've never done any reading on puffers, never had the urge. I will now. :)
