Anyone ever been to Key West, FL

SP33Demon

Lifer
Going there on vacation Saturday for a week, and was wondering if there are any *must see* things to do?

Thanks,

Rob

Keep your eyes open a bit after you turn out the lights in your motel. They have a strange breed of roaches there that the eyes glow bright green after they crawl out of the TV set.

You'll want to do the Duval Street thing one night. Take a cab (trust me on this) and check out all the bars and clubs. There's even a clothing-optional one if you're feeling sporty.

Other than that, check out the street performers down on the docks at sunset, charter a snorkling trip on one of the big sailboats (the women that crew the big catamaran are hot....I'd recommend that one 😀 ), eat some good fresh seafood, etc.

One of my grandmothers was born there, which makes her a "Conch". Cayo Hueso is what we call it, something about bones. (Anyone know what I am talking about?)

Anyway, I like the old graveyard, but then I'm a little weird. I feel my soul moving down there, kind of hard to explain.

You will notice all kinds of cats roaming around... mostly "Hemingways" with extra toes. They like to be fed, so give them your scraps. 🙂

One word of warning... it will be EXTREMELY humid and depending on when trash day is, it might be a little stinky on some streets. Key West is kind of ripe in the heat of summer. Wear light, cotton clothing and be sure to have several changes of clothes, because you will be drenched with sweat.

I remember the aquarium was very nice but it has been probably a decade since I have been down that way. Also, a popular favorite would be Key Lime Pie. I also remember that if you are into cheesy things, you have to go take a picture at the "Southernmost point of the continental US".

Out of curiousity, how does someone out of Florida get there? Is there an airport down there?

Oh, one more thing, my buddy just told me that some season, maybe lobster, just opened up down there and he was going down this week.

Thanks man I'll check it out!

Be careful about what hotel you stay at, get a good hotel......

I'm actually renting a house down there about 20 miles east of Key West, but will be in KW for about 3-4 nights for some partying! 🙂

Southermost point sounds interesting. We're flying into Miami and driving there, it was way cheaper than flying into Key West (which you would have to connect from Miami anyhow). Yes I've also heard that lobster season was opening and some of the rentals I looked at had traps off their dock, and an additional fee for catching lobster...

Watch out for those $500 tee-shirts. :Q

Have dinner in the hotel at the end of Duval Street. I forgot the name.

Go on one of those sailboat or catamaran cruses.

Get a drink at Sloppy Joes.

Lots of interesting history... I remembered why we call it Island of Bones now, lots of dead people on the beach when the Calusa were there.

I have another word of warning for you... it will take FOREVER to get from Key Largo to Key West. You may go insane before you even get there.

Yup. There's a reason the flight to KW are expensive.....the drive down there kinda sucks. It's pretty, but it takes forever. 😉

Yeah, see Duval street as mentioned. You might want to rent of the mini cars people have there, can seat 2 or 4 people. Its like a go-cart only with more space and looks more like a car.

I can't remember the guys name for sure.... maybe its Mel Fisher, but he has a museum. Personally, I think the museum isn't setup very well and isn't as neat as some of the videos produced on him. Anyway, he found a crap load of treasure that no one thought really existed from a spanish trip, he got rich fast from all the bars of gold and silver.

Anyway, Duval street, that museum, theres also a strip teaser place I remember walking by, sorry, I don't remember seeing windows on the place, hehe.

The houses are all small and cost a ton of money. Its a great place really, but don't expect a KMart or Wal*Mart there.

I was really disappointed with Key West when I was there about 10 years ago. I was expecting a tropical paradise, but it looked more like some seedy little town in Michigan unless you were right on the water. Hell.. They even had a Kmart. I liked the area that I stayed at much better (Fort Meyers Beach, Sanibel Island, Captiva). We did visit someone on Marathon Key and that was even a lot nicer than Key West.

Beach? What beach? All I saw was rocks. The coolest part for me was walking down the main drag (watch out for drag queens though) and hitting all the open bars. I also dug watching the sunset from the pier. I just wished that all those performance artists didn't clog up the place though. I also liked the drive down there on the long bridges. I was there when they were putting up a new bridge. I believe that they used part of the old bridge to film the movie "True Lies".

I really should've gone out on the water when in Key West. I hear that the water is super shallow out for quite a ways because of a huge sand bar. The water near Sanibel Island and Ft Meyers Beach wasn't bad at all. Lots of white sandy beaches.

Anyway.. Sorry that I can't be more specific. It was a lot to take in at the time and it was 10 years ago.

Oh.. Yeah.. I agree.. You have to have some Key Lime Pie! It's outstanding!!

You can pretty much walk around the whole island. Rent a bike, go snorkling(scuba diving seemed to look like it was more fun).

We went fishing on the flats for barracuda. Expensive but we had a awesome time.

Enjoy the sunset in the beach, and if you're walking down Duval st. Watchout for the rainbow flags.

There's a Hard Rock there, get a shirt.

Key West has a tiny, tiny airport. No jet liner is allowed to land there, I think the run way is too small. We got lucky and got put on a direct flight from atlanta in a private jet sorta thing, one where you actually walk out on to the runway and board the plane. Initially we were to take a propeller plane from Tampa.

Not if you stay over at Holiday Isle for a night. 🙂

Watch for the green flash of light just as the Sunsets from the marina then take the elevator to the roof restaurant and watch it again. Then eat dinner go down to the Tiki bar and get smashed.

No wait, call me and I will meet you there and we will all get tanked together.

Mmmmm... Sanibel/Captiva. Can't beat that!

You are right, Key West has piss for a beach... but the snorkeling is great. And if you aren't interested in the wild night life (I'm not a bar/club person myself) there is a lot of history... my 98 year old grandmother tells me all kinds of stuff about how it was like when she was a girl down there.
