I was there a month and a half ago. I was not impressed (granted I only stayed there 1 day). It seemed like a small town with lots of tourist shops. I saw a beach there but that was the a very sorry beach. Parking was a pain too. I would stick with South beach in Miami instead.

Good advice, call and get a room in advance they will charge more if you just show up no matter what a brochure may say thier room rate is.

The street performers are pretty cool. The bars on Duval rocked. Was to drunk most of the time I was there to remeber anywhere good to eat.

Definately ask some on at the hotel to recomend a bar. I forget the intersecting street on Duval but our hotel guy was like fo down this street to Duval and go left for boys right for girls. Drag queens were every where.

Yea,

The conchs call that seedy, 1 light bulb, roach infested room ?local atmosphere?.

Rustic was the word that I was looking for.

How much will snorkeling run if I don't bring my own equip?

Isla: Thanks for the history, info... I actually looked at places at Islamorada but I wanted to rent a place closer to KW for the nightlife...

xchangx: Yeah I checked out fishing costs and they were close to the rent for a whole week!

Fausto: Yes the drive down is gorgeous I heard, that's why we chose to drive... maybe next time we'll fly? BTW How much will the Cat crew be for a day? :)

Salvador: Yes that was the Keys in True Lies! Also, we're going to a Dolphin Reserve near Marathon... I heard you get to swim on their backs there so my g/f is excited...

FlashG: Sent you PM about maybe meeting up if you will be in the area?

AgaBooga: I'll check out the museum on Duval, thanks.

It's more of a small town place without too much to do. I mean you can visit Southernmost point, walk Duval and Whitehead street, take a pic of the US1 End sign, and go to Hemmingway's house and the Shipwreck museum, but that's kinda it.

If you want beach, take a cruise to Nassau ;) As for the drive, that's one pretty cool ride from Miami down thru the keys on Overseas Hwy. Very much worth the drive.

Lots of interesting history... I remembered why we call it Island of Bones now, lots of dead people on the beach when the Calusa were there.

I have another word of warning for you... it will take FOREVER to get from Key Largo to Key West. You may go insane before you even get there.
Yup. There's a reason the flight to KW are expensive.....the drive down there kinda sucks. It's pretty, but it takes forever. ;)

Bah! You guys are weak, I drove back from Key West straight on up to Ohio without stopping except for gas. Miami to Key West is a cool drive.

We stayed at B&B's a couple of times kind of nice.

Also see:

Hemingway?s House
The Light House (across from Hemingway's)
The White House

If you dive and have the time you can charter a flight to the Isle of Tortuga. Bring your own DRINKING water.

You are right, Key West has piss for a beach... but the snorkeling is great. And if you aren't interested in the wild night life (I'm not a bar/club person myself) there is a lot of history... my 98 year old grandmother tells me all kinds of stuff about how it was like when she was a girl down there.
Yes.. There is a ton of history there. Too bad that it is overshadowed by such touristy crap like the Conch Train. I really wanted to get out on the water, but we only had a day (and evening) there. This was also back in the pre-swim with the dolphins days. About the coolest thing to do other than go out on a boat or snorkel was to rent a PWC (even these were new back in the early 90's). The jet ski's had been around, but they were much harder to nogotiate than a PWC if you weren't use to them.

The guy that we stayed with on Marathon for a night was the owner of the Mercedes car dealership that my girlfriend's (at the time) father was the general manager of. He was an old timer and he told stories about when they used to go over to Cuba to party back in the 40's and 50's during the pre-Castro days. This guys situation was really sad though. Here he was retired and had all the money that he needed to live out his days in paradise, but his wife had Alzheimers and was basically just overseeing here care. You could tell that it was really breaking his heart when they pulled out the photo albums and the wife was asking who this person was as the man was pointing to their daughter.
