I've been using MyMileMarker.com since mid April now and it really helps just track what your actually spending on gas and what you're actually getting MPG wise.

The worst part is seeing the projected cost of gas for 1 year

I'm up to $3,921 now :( (15k miles a year / 15.3mpg x $4 per gallon)

Anyways if others are in a similar situation as myself and have a dreaded "gas guzzler" and are waiting for the appropriate time to get rid of it to get something more economical, this site is great for helping decide when that finical point has been reached.

At this point if I got the 2009 Forester, which is what I plan on getting, the combined MPG on that is 22mpg, which is 20 city and 27 highway. that's a $99 a month cost savings in gas versus my Tahoe I currently have, but with how much more the monthly loan payment would be it just doesn't add up at this point, it'd still cost more to get the Forester than keep my Tahoe per month when monthly payment and gas is factored in.

Why don't you talk to actual forester drivers and see what they're getting. Those EPA numbers a notoriously bad.

If you're getting 15+ mpg in a Tahoe you're really not doing bad.

Again, I'm not saying I can't afford it, I can.

But once/if it gets to a point where getting rid of the Tahoe to get the Forest saves me money each month, then there is no reason not to do that IMO.

Depending on the age of the Tahoe, you might see a significant jump in personal property taxes on the new car (I went from a '91 to a used '02 and my personal prop taxes went from $140/yr to almost $700/yr), and don't forget about sales tax on the new car, if you get it.

It'll take a while, at $99/month savings, to overcome just sales tax on a new car where I am.

Edit: If you're trying to justify the purchase to yourself - don't forget those items. If you're already sold and just want a new car, ignore them. Likewise, if you're trying to sell a wife on the idea of a new car for you, don't mention those :p

I've been doing the same thing with an Excel spreadsheet for a while now....

Although mobile access would be cool.

No convincing going on here.

My Tahoe is a '99 with 147,000 miles on it.

I tend to drive my cars into the ground and I plan on doing the same with this Forester, I just want to save up more before getting it.

Probably around the end of this year I'll be comfortable with making the purchase.

IDK....I'm kind of leery about putting that much detail about myself on a website that will almost assuredly be approached by insurance companies so that they can charge you policy rates based on a more accurate calculation of actual miles driven instead of the "how many miles do you drive a year" operator question now that I can "fudge" just a little.

You don't have to put anything personal.

Just make it up and use a junk email if you're worried.

Yeah, I too use a cool program called 'Excel', I think it's been out since '85 or so.
