900 million? For a memorial? I'm glad most of that money was donated and not taxpayer money or else I'd be very upset.
To be fair, rebuilding didn't begin the day after 9/11. Nor is it any secret that things cost more today than they did in the 60s. But that's beside the point. The point is that, regardless of how long it's taking, there IS progress being made.It took 5 years to build 2 100+ story buildings
It has been ~9 years.
The project was (most recently) scheduled to be complete by 2013 (not going to happen).
No, the original towers cost 900 million. Now they want to spend a +10 billion for 3 million less square feet.
There isn't a big demand atm for office space in Manhatten, I'm told. Some of the entities who once made Manhatten their base of operations have relocated to Jersey and elsewhere and have a low probability that they will ever move back.
Penn and Teller had a great idea on their show Bullshit. Build the same towers again. Biggest f-you you can give!
Possibly because there's insurance money and unless they rebuild that money goes to waste. Plus there's an issue of national pride in restoring what was lost along with a big 'FU' to OBL. imo, the design should have looked like a big middle finger directed at the ME.why is it a suprise? the economy has gone down so the need and desire for office space has to.
why built it if there is no profit in it? it really does not make sense.
Yeah, hate whatever. Try to think of any GOOD reason why a mosque should be built near ground zero. It's completely in bad taste.
On another note that property is being payed in CASH, I'm source the source of that cash is completely legit.

Almost immediately, I had the same reaction, the best response to the terrorists was to rebuild the same towers, perhaps with one more floor, and do it fast.
Ancient ship unearthed at World Trade Center site
Saw this in a reply to an article I looked up on this. Sounds exactly like what they're doing.
What constitutes "near". Early in this faux controversy, it was reported that it was "On" the site. Turned out it was actually many blocks away. Get over it.
I saw a news item on the long drawn out WTC rebuilding.
Paid for huge granite memorial that was used for a ceremony but will not be used in the final design, now sits at the company that made it.
Building designs changed over and over.
NY port authority taking contractors to court over access.
Numerous changes in what would be built, 1 , 2, 3, buildings or more.
In 1940 we built an entire city in just 2 years that allowed us to manufacture parts for the bomb and house 75K people complete with schools, hospitals, labs, factories. It has been almost 10 years for WTC. If they did things then like they do know the Germans would be crossing the white-house lawn before we worked out what color paint to use.
