Anyone else not impressed by tablets?

I read a study that said that deeply insecure people keep talking about their financial worth in public.

You know, I think that's a problem with our generation, we blew out the housing market and essentially the world's economy by not talking about money, and lying to each other.

It's time we got over that mindset and quit lying about that stuff.

Yep, I took advantage of being laid off. Funemployment they're calling it. I had a lot of money saved up, plus severance and unemployment I took a nice long almost two year vacation. Now I'm back at work making more than I did at my last job.

But believe whatever you want if it helps you sleep better at night little man.

And sure you make that kind of money. Are you talking paper gains? How much of that stock you can't stop talking about did you unload to realize those gains?

Yeah, keep posting, you lying sack of crap.

95%er, LOL.

I was one of those poor SOB's that paid taxes so you could post your drivel on our dime.

Thanks, and if your avatar met you in real life, he'd kick your sorry, lying ass.

We've got an iPad Gen 2 and ASUS Transformer (with dock) at work, and I have a Nook Color (1st gen) at home.

I use my Nook Color the most for browsing through Anandtech articles mostly. I use the Transformer at work for doing the same thing. I personally don't use the iPad.

We were given the tablets to do work, and my fiancee uses the Nook Color at home alot.

But I dont use any of them much and that's simply because it doesn't fit what I do. My web browsing is composed almost entirely of forums. Many forums display like crap on a Tablet (and ones supporting Tapatalk often feel cumbersome to navigate).

My laptop (T510) has a fantastic keyboard, great screen, and quick response (helped by its SSD no doubt). Because all my time is spent on forums, I just never pull myself away to read on a tablet. The laptop does it all for me. The laptop has become my main machine while my desktops have been relegated to mostly Gaming / File serving.

Still dont like the short throws of laptop keys though, but the Thinkpad is about as good as it gets in that regard.

The only thing that impresses me about them is their ability to whip people into a froth of petty arguments on the internet. Video cards are even worse (better?) in this regard.

It also said that to cover up this character flaw they constantly introduce straw men into every discussion they have.

We (the baby boomers) nuked the damn world wide economy with our "sensibilities" by lying about our incomes and living beyond our means.

Heaven fucking forbid someone dares to talk about income, savings or investing.

And if dipshit lies about his income, claiming to be a 95%er, I'm calling him on it, he's lying, to himself and the forum.

95th percenter, my ass.

And what difference does it make if he is lying or telling the truth? How does it affect anyone here? Bober could make $10K a year or $1 million a year and I don't think it matters in the tablet discussion we're trying to have.

In fairness, the same can be said for people badmouthing tablets who haven't used one. As I mentioned earlier, I thought they were mildy interesting but thought $500+ was too much, even though I'd have no problem affording one. So, when the Touchpad firesale happened, I thought it was a relatively low risk way of obtaining a decent tablet to see how I'd use one. I was close to pulling the trigger on a Kindle when the firesale happened, as I wanted something to use as an eReader.

Are you having a midlife crisis or something? Wow, for a baby boomer you sure act mature. /sarcasm.

Anyways, back to the discussion on how much better tablets are for web browsing, and web browsing only. /chuckle

Yeah, the demographics data indicates most iPad purchasers are making ~$75K+ and have college degrees.

Interesting when you compare that to who says they have no use for a tablet here.

Manufacturers would kill for a strong customer base with that much cash.

Meh, I can afford one, but I still think they are priced into the stratosphere and not worth the asking price for what benefits they provide. Get a 32GB+ local storage, 1080p or better 9-10in screen, mini-HDMI port (gotta keep it light and thin), with a SD card port for easily expanding storage for $300 or less and I'm sold.

K? I can afford one, I've used them and I think spending more than 200 dollars for a tablet is retarded. They aren't worth it, they're gimmicky and niche.

I've owned two tablets and I do testing on them for work. Meh.

I'm pretty impressed by tablets. This thread reminds me of a Louis C.K. bit. The one about how we're surrounded by incredible things and we're completely unimpressed by all of them.

Tablets are pretty incredible. They have hours and hours of battery life, a full web browsing experience, insanely responsive touchscreens, almost unbelievably small size. They can't do everything, but they can do way more than I would have expected them to be able to do before they became mainstream, and they do it faster and more easily than I would have guessed this early in the game.

What's insane is how quickly people get jaded by stuff where suddenly something amazing "isn't that impressive".

No, all of it is impressive and really absolutely incredible to the point of being almost magical. I just think there are better and cheaper tools for certain jobs. These tools are better values to me, which makes them relatively more impressive by comparison.

They are not going to replace legitimate productivity devices any time soon. You won't be programming, crunching excel spreadsheets, typing up project charters, or doing heavy photoshop on a tablet. But a lot of people are going to be looking at them instead of a 2nd laptop or other device to keep in their house.

For my household that's exactly it. My 8 year old especially is using the laptop and iTouch more and more to the point I'd like to get him his own device in the near future. I'm leaning towards a cheap laptop for school work and his little flash based games he loves so much.

Another market something like our iTouch is eating into IMO is the handheld gaming device market. My kids prefer many of the games on the iTouch as compared to a Nintendo DS. From a parents perspective, do I buy the $200 device that only plays games, or do I buy the $200 device that plays games, and does lots of other neat stuff? Hmm, easy choice there. Also, the kids actually prefer the touch based games and all of them are under $5 as compared to $20-40 for DS games.

The newest generations of ultrabooks (including Macbook Air) and Windows 8 tablets (especially convertible ones) are going to start eating iPad sales by year's end.

Greater functionality and power (which is what most netbooks lacked) in addition to lightweight portability are attractive selling points to people who need to work on the go, or who want higher end gaming than the iPad or Android tablets can deliver.

I want a Zenbook or the new Samsung Series 9 so bad. There's a healthy amount of competition in the ultrabook category early this year, and I'm hoping prices continue to drop from just below $1,000 to below $800. I wouldn't even consider a tablet at that point.

Yeah, if I could get something like that for less than $800, any want for an iPad goes right out the window.

Poor little man. So inesecure. Frankly, I'm embarrased for you. What's the matter, 1" penis? Women laugh at it?

I could go buy 10 iPads today if I felt like it. But I don't so I won't. But believe whatever you want spanky, your whole identity is clearly tied up in Apple. What a sad pathetic life you lead.

I can afford one easily. I don't waste my money.

I find iPhones paradoxical. Mostly poor people own iPhones and iPads. The people who are trying to bum $20 here or there usually have iPads/iPhones and can't save money to save their life.

Which is probably why the first thing they say is "HAHA YOUR POOR" because they had to scrape together the $500 and they assume you do too.

I am impressed by my 32GB Touchpad at $150. But I wouldn't spend $500 on a tablet over a laptop.
It's not a laptop replacement, and people who think tablets will replace PCs are smoking some crack. They may have people who delay a PC purchase while they fit a tablet in their budget, and analysts will come out and say, see people are buying tablets over PCs. But that's because most people have a good enough PC already, not because they are replacing it with a tablet.
