I can't express how much I hate laptops. I have had four of them, a cheap Lenovo (i3 B490), a mid range HP Pavilion (DV6 or something), and an Alienware. Only that Lenovo was okay, I mean the only one which I didn't want to break into pieces, because of its keyboard, which made me a 60+ WPM from probably 40 or something. The Alienware was the worst money I have spent on a computer related product.

Now I have one C2D Lenovo for my office work, and I need carry it when I visit my clients too, but that's it. I never take it home, never will. I just don't see the point of them! Even the most high end laptop will never have the power of a mid end desktop, so gaming is out of question. You won't be able to do office works properly on that small screen. Then there's the factor of no mouse. Laptop is what I call a hotch potch, it tries to do everything (especially the high end ones) but can't do anything properly. And the persons who buy gaming laptops even when they have no space problems are the most dumb category out there.

Laptops just never have any practical use for me.

When I had use for a laptop I always carried a mouse and keyboard with me... always used the mouse when possible and if I wasn't going to move the laptop in the next hour or so and space allowed I'd plug in the keyboard too.

For example when I traveled more and was staying at a hotel or a friend/relatives for a night or two.

It also whispers to me. Last week it said "I need an SSD upgrade".

yeah, not everyone needs an i7 for everyday usage at work or play (although it's nice) and in surprisingly a lot of cases a mid-range bang for the buck cpu paired with a good SSD will seem faster to most people than a system with a high end cpu and a pokey HDD.

....

I still have the laptop I got 5 years ago for grad school -- barely used it in grad school. It's come in handy a LOT of times and I got my money's worth. However, it sits on my shelf for months at a time collecting dust. Another annoying thing is that I've had to change the battery out for almost $150 -- the thing was only $550 brand new from Dell.

So, it's useful, but no way I'll ever get an expensive one.

I would completely get rid of my desktop but I feel so bad because it runs so well even almost 6 years later.

man i hardly use them at all as well. most laptops still have ridiculously low res screens and now they have really slow chips (i hate that atom stuff and the low clock ulv stuff) that gist doan work fa me. also i always imagine that the hardware isnt very durable since ive had two latitudes go poof on me

You are obviously poor and buy crappy laptops. You shouldn't buy laptops.

My 5-ish year old desktop also still works very well. However, I do not have a desire to get rid of it. I just hope the BIOS battery doesn't die because having to open it up is a hassle -- voltage still looks very good using HWMonitor.

My monitor's actually 7 years old at this point. A 24" 1920x1200, still bright. Only thing I don't like is the black crush.

Something with at least a Core 2 Duo and a decent amount of RAM. If it feels slow then stick a budget SSD of a reasonable capacity in that laptop because even on SATA II, it'll be noticeably faster and snappier for OS boot times, application opening and general OS snappiness. Benchmarks are mostly for bragging rights because past a certain point most people don't notice further increases in read/write speeds in everyday usage..
....

That's what I did in my Dell laptop in sig. Getting a C2D upgrade is cheap (went from 2Ghz 2MB 35w to 2.5Ghz 3MB 25W for $7 on ebay) and the upgrade from a mechanical HDD to the 80GB OCZ SSD was phenomenal it terms of performance and battery life. As a media player with a 17" screen, light/older gaming and work, it's a beast as feels every bit as fast as the new LV laptops except for the form factor.

My main 1680x1050 ACER is almost a decade old now. I cant justify changing it up.

That's another thing - the heat and bulk of the laptop in bed makes it very uncomfortable. Much rather have a tablet.

3 hours from my work Lenovo W520. I've tried working in the backyard patio and other places... obviously the wifi needed is sucking it up too.

Ouch.

I have a Dell E5440 with a 15w i7 and an SSD, so it's not too power hungry.

I got a Dell UltraSharp 2707WFP at 1900x1200 (2007 model), which I got for free since my old work was just gonna trash it. I would like something that's 1440p but I can't really justify spending $500 after I got this for free lol.

I have a Macbook Pro, but my phone and tablet mostly killed its use case so I won't upgrade it. Oh and I have a netbook that exists to program Logitech Harmonies for family.

Some of us have to occasionally work away from home/base. For that you want a decent sized screen, keyboard and perhaps moderate hardware capabilities. Anyone who doesn't have those needs is probably better off with a tablet.

Love my thinkpad.

I think it all depends on what you're doing with them. For me, I type a fair amount be it PowerShell, SSH in a Linux box, or typing posts on forums. For that, I prefer a desktop or laptop. Any extended computing I do from my desktop.

I've had several tablets, including a current work provided Surface Pro 3. Hardly ever use it. Using a Surface pro 3 on my lap just is not comfortable with the kick stand. I much prefer a laptop with a monitor that is supported by the base of the laptop and not a kick stand. I do get use out of the Surface when remote as it is the easiest of all the devices to transport, but beyond that, I just prefer a laptop.

I will agree that a good 1080p display is nice to have in a laptop, and something I am looking for in my next personal laptop. As of now, I have a laptop at both of my main couches. If I need to do some quick remote work, I just RDP to my desktop from a laptop and kick things along. If I need to give it more attention, I walk over to the desktop. I am sure tablets would work just as well, but I just find them less comfort.

Dafuq?

No, no dafuq. I worked IT before and I thought it was so stupid that their policy was to change monitors every 4 or 5 years (or was it 3?). Regardless, it was a number that made no sense to me since they already had LCDs.

Paid like $700 for my Dell 2407. Got it on sale before the 2410 came out. Upgrading would be nice since IPS panels seem to be more widely available and for half what I paid for. I'd like a 30" 1440p but holy crap, I had enough trouble dealing with the dpi of a 24" 1920x1200.

Yeah that monitor was at least $1000 brand new. I think I took it late 2010 to mid 2011.

They wanted those all in one iMacs so meh. I missed out on the chance to nab the older 30in Apple Cinema displays at 1600p. My boss grabbed it for herself first :colbert:

never liked laptops until i got one :) ive been building myself high end desktops for the last 10 years + and always scoffed at notebooks. until last year when i started working as a realtor and my freelance photography - i needed a laptop since i was mobile so much of the time. i did get a powerful laptop, the dell xps 15 touch, so maybe that helps, but i love this thing. and i'm used to a high end desktop setup.

can't beat the convenience, and it's great to use around the house whether on the deck, sun porch, roof deck, living room, whatever...

I had a need for my rMBP because my company had a BYOD policy, but then redacted it. The new group I am in has since adopted it again, so the laptop is now in much heavier outside the home / off the desk use.

I like desktops. My phone has largely taken over my mobile needs. It's not so great for creation, but I can easily view documents, and the always on data is useful. Still waiting for the desktop/phone convergence. I'd love to be able to dock my phone, and have a real GNU/Linux desktop to use on the road.

A good portion of my time is spent on a laptop on the couch. I only really use my desktop for gaming and Excel.

Man, you people are going to hate the modern office environment. I work for an IT company, and companies are not ordering PCs anymore, only laptops. If they to want a PC, they're getting thin clients to connect to a terminal server. Docking stations are used if people want multi monitor setups.

all i use at home is my laptop. i pretty much officially retired my desktop at home a few weeks ago when i saw you can install android studio on osx. i used to only use my desktop when i needed to do android dev, but now i can use my hackintosh for that. i will still use my desktop occassionally when i need to use some photoshop to make graphics for apps, but other than that, it will remain powered off.

i use my laptop every day. so much easier to lounge on the couch and use it. i am at a desk all day, last thing i want to do at home is sit in a computer room at a desk, would rather lounge on my couch with it on my lap.

i really want to get an MBP now though, again, since i found out i can do android dev on osx now. that way i can just do ios and android dev on the same machine. my hackintosh is a few years old and still runs fine, but the screen resolution and power of a newer MBP would be really helpful for development.

my laptop has an i5 cpu, 240gb ssd, 8gb ram. it is comparable to the desktop i had for anything but gaming. My heaviest workload is using lightroom sometimes and it works pretty well compared to my desktop.

No use for them. I like my full-size screen and keyboard.

I did end up finding a use for a tablet.

i have a laptop at home but i keep it docked. i dont mind the keyboard, the the trackpoint is ok, but i do prefer a regular keyboard and mouse connected to the dock.

i had the gamer upgrade bug, though. i was always trying to buy a new game and upgrade something. when i bought a house i decided i needed to spend money on the house, so i sold the custom tower and got a laptop that i wouldnt be able to upgrade or play new games on every 3 months :)

I can use dual monitors with it, but i just have it hooked up to a 32" tv.

i dont move it around much, but i got one with an extended battery so it last several hours if i want to take it outside or to the couch.

now, at work i have an ultrabook docked with 3 monitors. the trackpad sucks but i am in my office 90% of the time so its not a big deal.

I just started a new job a few months ago and I was surprised that this was the case. Our department was just upgraded to a Dell Latitude 7250. It is a really nice laptop.

Yeah, we have a contract with HP and have been using their Probooks and Elitebooks. They're laid out so they're very serviceable and pretty well put together. They usually come with i5 or i7 processors and biometric security. Been happy with them.

Get better laptops. Consumer grade variants tend to suck IMO.
Business class laptops are built to task. Been using my W500 for 6 years now and with a SSD upgrade its still trucking on.

I did get a Macbook for work though, and I have to say, its really REALLY nice.
