I've never owned a laptop for more than a few months. I've bought about 3 during the past 10 years thinking that I'll use them frequently, but they always end up gathering dust so I ended up selling them. Nothing beats a desktop PC with at least 2 monitors. I do use my Galaxy Tab S 10.1 frequently though.

For me, no point. I either use my desk top, or tablet.

I find myself using a PC, in general, a lot less. The only time I'm really on one is at work. Other than that it is a tablet or my phone. Really the only thing I use my home PC for anymore is Lightroom and storage.

Not very many people need laptops.

Most would be served well by a desktop and if they have to take notes or do some work in the library for classes (requiring a physical keyboard then get a cheaper used laptop.

Something with at least a Core 2 Duo and a decent amount of RAM. If it feels slow then stick a budget SSD of a reasonable capacity in that laptop because even on SATA II, it'll be noticeably faster and snappier for OS boot times, application opening and general OS snappiness. Benchmarks are mostly for bragging rights because past a certain point most people don't notice further increases in read/write speeds in everyday usage..

But yeah, if you want a quality laptop with reasonable specs you're going to spend money for it and most of the time the costs aren't justifiable enough to classify the purchase as a need rather than a want.

Almost never use my desktop now and if I do I remote into it from my laptop. Rather be on my couch, patio or on my bed.

At work, I'm almost always in meetings, so a laptop is essential. And if I'm at my desk, docked with multiple monitors.

Never liked laptops either. I have a desktop for all my main computer uses. If I want to be on the couch I will use my iPad. If I travel I actually take my cheap Acer chromebook.

Laptops were invaluable to me when I was still in school. I used to use my MacBook when writing articles at work because I didn't like the workstation they gave me. Out IT guy trusted me enough not to care.

At home, I mostly use my desktop and my iPad. It's significantly faster than my ageing MacBook. I might end up replacing it with a Surface or Surface Pro. The portability and convenience of a tablet, but it can get down to business when needed. Plus I can stream my Steam games to it.

I use my laptop for travel and work. Otherwise, it just sits around looking expensive. It also whispers to me. Last week it said "I need an SSD upgrade".

Battery life isn't significant enough to do any real work without being tied down somewhere. Keyboard sucks. Trackpad sucks - need a real mouse plugged in. May as well research from a smartphone or tablet. Never needed to do work on one outside of my job and they provide a laptop. I use Synergy that connects my mouse and keyboard to the laptop screen.

Definitely profitable, since pretty much anyone is going to use a laptop over a desktop.

I can get 7-10hrs from mine (both home and work). At least, that's what the battery monitor tells me. I'm on a docking station at work.

I use a Logitech Anywhere mouse. Works on the coach and bed.

I am, or am not, how ever you want to put it. I have 4 desktops at home. I gaming + media server, one for kids, and two connected to TVs as media centers. I do have 4 laptops, 3 used regularly and 1 retired but nowhere to go. They are used for internet surfing while watching TV/movie only.
IMHO, they are too underpowered and small screen do to anything meaningful.

No use for them. I like my full-size screen and keyboard.

I did end up finding a use for a tablet.

I don't use a desktop at all. My wife and daughter both have an all-in-one they use for school work. I use my notebook or tablet for everything. Most of my computer usage is web based or simple word/excel stuff. Nothing that takes a big screen or a number pad.

Desktops are generally far more powerful, far cheaper, and for me far more useful. I want a powerful processor, large screen (or two), and a mouse for so many applications where laptops generally suck (programming, Solidworks, photo editing, etc). Heck, even when I'm just browsing the internet, small laptop screens and trackpads are annoying.

I use an HTPC with a 47" TV for when I'm on the couch. Why would I want a small piece of electronics precariously perched on my legs while I struggle to type? I use a smartphone with 40+ hours of battery life and weighs next to nothing when I'm on the go.

Laptops just never have any practical use for me.

Use my 12" Dell all the time at client sites. One thing Windows 8 got right is the instant-on startup when you open the lid. My little guy is like a swiss army knife- I can use it to do anything :) Stuck an SSD in it and get 8 hours of battery too!

For me it is more of a mobile factor. I am always out so a laptop is pretty much needed for me.

Sure a desktop is more comfortable but I tend to favor a bit more into mobility. Performance wise, I am not really using my laptop to game or edit videos so I don't really care that my laptop is underpowered compared to my desktop at home.

That's another thing - the heat and bulk of the laptop in bed makes it very uncomfortable. Much rather have a tablet.

3 hours from my work Lenovo W520. I've tried working in the backyard patio and other places... obviously the wifi needed is sucking it up too.
