I just recently heard about this. I'd love to go to Naked DSL but we still need the phone for fax and alarm. I'm not sure if the alarm system would work with a voip provider.
I called my monitoring company about just this issue. They said that as the technology stands now, that they are getting inconsistent results from their customers who switched to VoIP. In other words sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
It has something to do with how the data gets packeted.
They have what is essentially a cell phone that will interface with your alarm panel. In looking into it, it appears there are several makers of these. So alarm calls go out through the cellular network. Which, if you think about it is preferable anyway to a land line that could get cut prior to a break in.
The net result for me was a minuscule savings which is why, for now, I'm staying with a land line.
BTW, for anyone reading, DSL is not available here for me.
Also for alarm monitoring I highly recommend
http://www.watchlight.com/. I'm paying less than $10 a month. They are very professional. My panel was programmed over the phone by one of their techs by appointment. We pre-determined the day and time and they called and did the deed. We experience a lot of power outages here and they are the first company that has consistently honored my "do not call" request for power outages.
