Damn straight!

And.. my AMD system runs great, and I'm not worried about marketing gimmicks such as paper releases and whatnot. I'm interested in the technology.

Nope, I'm quite happy with AMD. I started out with an AMD K-6 200, then tried Intel's P2 450, and I'm back with AMD's 1.4G Athlon. Nothing to have lost any respect over.

Don't start the wars between the two its only a comment.

ditto... when i can pick up a p4 2.8 for 200-250 bucks, then i'm going to start to have to think about this... other wise no, amd is the way to go, performace to price wise, intel can't beat it.

I prefer Intel Products at the moment but that doesn't mean I think AMD is sh!t because they aren't. I'm glad I have a choice between the two. Only a Dweeb Fanboy would disrespect Intel or AMD.

I agree, I believe they keep the processor ecomony in the balance. Without either, prizes would skyrocket. That is just my opinion though.

Didn't lose respect for AMD, but I think right now Intel is doing better. I wish it was possible to buy all AMD instead of AMD chips and VIA chips.

I don't respect companies, I choose whether to buy their products or not. I can't for the life of me understand how the fact that Athlons are manufactured by AMD affects me.

No. Personally I don't care about paper launches, because I don't buy the fastest processor that's out there. I can't afford to.

If intel sold for the same prices AMD did, i'd give them a try, but there's no way I'm going to pay the $$$ for intel stuff when I can go AMD and invest that extra cash elsewhere.

I LOVE AMD. Without them, prices would still be ridiculously high. BUT:

Show me one AMD CPU that can use passive cooling in a desktop system. Even heatsinks for the P4, which uses as much power as the AthlonXP, are quieter than their AMD counterparts due to AMDs insistence on using (and shrinking) a ridiculously small die and not using a heat spreader.

Compare the power consumption of a 1.0GHz P3 with that of a 2000+ AthlonXP. Which would you rather have sitting in your lap(top)? Consider battery life, cooling of the heatsink, and the noise generated in cooling that heatsink.

They all paper release CPU's, or at least they publicly announce the release of a CPU long before it is released. AMD has a very tough battle ahead and anything it is doing right now its doing for its very survival. Things change awful fast for a company like AMD who has a competitor with as much cash reserves, foundary capacity, and design resources. I am quite worried because while I don't necessarily 'love' one company over another, AMD is a great company and provides the only competition in a market that would otherwise be monopolized by Intel. And if you think Intel's pricing tier sucks now, wait until AMD is dead.

Not really, slightly disappointed about the paper launches that they took the route Intel did back when the 1 GHz race was going on.

Remember what Intel's prices were like before the K6-2 started making a dent in their sales? Gawd, I love AMD even if I despise VIA for some of the garbage I had from them over the years (which is why I'm running an nForce, thank you). I just hope AMD can hold on and find some more profit, or we might revisit those dark days of monopolistic pricing.

AMD is trading at 6.51, which needs to head higher. If they have any delays with Hammer, they'll be in big trouble as they can't keep absorbing hundreds of millions of dollars in losses every quarter. It would be interesting if they sold their chip business to VIA -- all VIA would need to do is build motherboards and become the next Intel. Wait...is that a good thing? :)

I dislike AMD because they make cheap stuff. Their stuff could be better, doesn't OC that well, has heat issues, but it's cheap. Intel is who I would prefer to have, nice OC'ing, cool even with only air cooling, but because they suck and have high prices, that ain't an option, so I dislike them too :).

Via and AMD? There's a little company called Nvidia that has a fix for that ;)

I like using Nforce boards + a nice XP CPU. Makes nice bare bones, and simple to put together systems for people.

I haven't tried the Nforce mb's yet, but then I've had pretty good luck with the Via setup's I've built :)

I have all the respect in the world for AMD.

Cheap and Fast CPU's

AMD also helps with motivating Intel Corp.
AMD also helps with forcing Intel to compete with AMD lower prices.

Without AMD we would have to pay Intel $1000 for any CPU.

this post doesn't seem very well reasoned to me...

athlons usually use smaller fans than P4s (60mm vs 80mm), put the same sized fan on it and you can use the same speeds and the same noise...

1GHz p3 to 2000+ XP is almost apples to oranges...

I still respect them but I hate the naming scheme. It's a 1.7ghz, call it a freaking 1.7! Don't play Intel's 'take advantage of the idiots' game. What do I mean by that? The fact that thier P4 can run at higher speeds without being faster is an intentional marketing deception. The average Joe doesn't know that bigger numbers arent always better.

My suggestion? Start rating them in MIPS / MFLOPS, both companies. Shame that Wallstreet can influence our companies so much, it should be the other way around.
